1. Description of Our Community
Without the prosperity of a big city, Hualien is the rural one with friendliness and unsophisticatedness. Enclosed between the towering Central Mountain Range and the azure Pacific Ocean, Hualien owns some beautiful countryside scenery, rich natural resources, and unique humane property. The Heart Lotus Ward, set up by Tzu Chi General Hospital, is the first palliative care ward for terminally ill patients in eastern Taiwan. The Heart Lotus Ward was established in Hualien where is the right place to practice the concept of 'respect life' and humanity. In addition, it fully reveals its characteristics of love and concerns, and helps terminal cancer patients complete the last part of their lives with dignity.
2. Summary of Our Project
Recently, the rate of committing suicide has increased year by year, so “commit suicide” has jumped into the top-ten death illnesses in Taiwan. Actually, the choice of committing suicide can not solve any problems and it just leaves so many painful burdens for the other people, it is really not a wisdom decision to do so. There are even extremely cases that some people they carry their children to end their lives, or they set up fires and bring the harms to other people. Hence, the Life Education in schools is becoming an important task nowadays. The spirit for Life Education is emphasizing on respecting your life. No matter you are poor or rich, destitute or wealthy; we need to treasure and to respect every life, even for those very ill patients, they should also have their proper care and dignity. If people can respect their own live, they can not only elaborate the functions of their lives but also do something do good for other people. We have interviewed the only one palliative care ward for terminally ill patients- The Heart Lotus Ward that has a professional team. They pay a lot of attention on illness patients who are tortured by cancer, and helps terminal cancer patients complete the last part of their lives with dignity. We can also find some good examples on them. “Death” is unwilling to be faced in our society, but death is just like withered flowers. By way of observing the doctors and nurses in The Heart Lotus Ward, we can find out the ideas of respecting lives from them, and let us understand how brief and changeable our lives are. Owing to that, we should treasure our everyday life and then face the death without any fear.

In our school mainly we rely on Hualien County internet center, by 1.5MB/56K ADSL internet system to get online service. But mostly the students use their internet facilities at home their school time; some of them use 56K modem connects to differential service providers, as well as some of them use ADSL internet usage (i.e. ADSL) to get online service
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
First Difficulty: We are junior high school students!!!!!!
Being junior high school students, we have so many tests and exams every day, and plus this time the internet Fair activity, it is such a hard job! When we have exams then we have to stop working on internet work, hence we did not have enough time to do the internet pages works at the beginning, but luckily sometimes teachers allowed us to use class time and lunch break time to use computer room, hence the model of our internet pages thus appeared little by little.
Second Difficulty: Not proficient technical skills!!!!
Since beginning, teachers hope we can create an internet page work with lots of pictures and connect with lighting. However, there is no one ever learn Flash program before, so we just have to do self-study on computer skills, after few failures and experiments, finally we got the result in the end. We really can feel sense of accomplishment!
The third difficulty:Poor English ability
Because English is not the second language or official language in Taiwan, most of us have poor English ability. Learning English is not easy for us. Relying on our self-confidence, we believe we can make our English ability better as soon as possible. We still need the helps from our teachers to sing up and translate for us or the schedule may be delayed. Teachers sometimes were not available, we just can do on our own to consult on dictionary or searching online. It was a big flock in front of us, but we’d rather to spend much time overcoming this problem.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
Life is just like the process of blooming and fading flowers, it is a nature way. So to live our life with serious attitude, to show up our colorful parts in our life. When the time we face to death, we will no longer feel scared.
Death is just like a teacher, it teaches us how to face every problems showed up in our life including teaching you how to live. When we feel our lives are uneven and also give up ourselves, but there is still someone who treasure his or her own life. Someone who scared death they can not face death. Every life will go to death so that we should have good uses of it. Every life was bestowed by God. Everyone will make use of it differently. Not to waste our life means to treasure life, treasure every moment and every thing in your life. Do not underestimate yourself; do not deny your ability; do not commit suicide easily. Everyone has to learn how to treat your life, once we have learned the right attitude, we will not have any fear for death. It is a serious issue for everyone in this world and we also need to learn. When we realize the meaning of our life, we can also see the dignity of our life, and the self-will from the patients who have cancer.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
Our school arranged the life education as one main issue in educational list, besides, Student Consultant Office also arranged “life concern week” in our term timetable. Together with “hungry 30 hours” and “bringing love to elderly and children care homes” these activities to enhance our data and information. As well as this is a way leads us to think about a life with a manageable methods.
According to our compulsory education syllabus, general activities provide students to the chance to introspect, extend their learning experiences, drive the whole related things, and encourage to be one’s master. There are four basic thoughts combined with our syllabus. Linking through with connecting in other fields makes participants understand the meaning of individual and the importance of unity.
Although we are just students, someone said that hat even we are just a little screw, but we also need to pay attention to our functions. We hope through this project we can makes some teenagers to understand we are not just learners, but also need to face the issue of death so that they won’t get commit suicide so easily just because they met something favorableness.
From interviewing, recording, asking, and collecting information, that’s all what we cannot learn from class. Also makes teachers and students can learn how to treasure blessedness, treasure life and respect life. Life is precious, we should hold on this moment, and do something more significant. We not only interview the patients in the Heart Lotus Care Room, but also make a good interaction with Tzu Chi hospital. It is easier to save the data and surf the Internet by computer. To develop the conception of cooperation and share each other can makes project perfectly.
