Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We live in Kaohsiung Shiaugan district, which makes us proud from being one of the ten biggest buildings in the world -- China ship (??), this huge place enterprise organization is the biggest national shipyard. Before its reformation, it provided ornamental hairpin work opportunities; it also brought prosperity along with time vicissitude. Although today, the China ship enterprise and organization reformed, it once had to face the challenge of declination and reformation. In order to promote the superiority of its competition, it reduced its human affairs’ disbursement cost. Thorough our research, we saw the importance of the innovation and the research and development. We believe that China ship is able to come out with its new appearance after combining the needs of the industry and the national defense demand union.

2. Summary of Our Project

China ship is our Shaugan area’s honor, and it has an important position in the Taiwan’s economical development. Frequently we hear from the elders’ mouth the China ship’s radiance of prospers, but we also hear to it declining sigh. In this research, we hope to study on this industry which is related to our hometown, and stimulate our competitive ability. With the penetration of the network dissemination, we want more people to know the China ship, and we also want to stimulate China ship’s creativity and find a new turning point.

The interesting and wonderful activities of ships conducted by the school allow us to discover more questions of manufacturing a ship. In order to solve our problem, we thought of our neighbor, China ship, it may help us to explain these doubts. Therefore, we decided to take the ship legend as our subject for our research. Through this report, we hope to let the world to know about it.

Under the direction of the scheme subjected research designed from three teachers, it directed us to become more familiar to this whole research. Although there were a lot of difficulties in the process of learning it, we insisted and succeeded in finishing this mission impossible!

Our research includes information collection ( information of ships, information of China ship), interviews ( member of China ship’s public relation, Mr. Yeh engineer, Mr. Li from planning section, Tze-shuen’s grandfather), visits in the China ship’s factory, ship manufacturing, designing interaction type games websites, editing and recording new songs, drawing ships

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Exclusive network’s main engine: The school set up our own exclusive network’s main engine for us. It allows us to send collected information, pictures to the network’s main engine. It facilitate us to process works related to the homepage promptly . The school’s network provides: Two computer rooms in our school, instruct teacher are allowed to make reservations of the computer rooms in the second floor (time allowed are from 8:00 ~ 8:40 in the morning to 12:35~13:30 at noon). It enables us to do data processing in the computer rooms, and it facilitates us to make discussions, so data processing and print documents Internet environment in every team member’s house: Every team member should have a computer in their house, so that they can do their homework and write their daily reflections on a electronic file, then bring it to school and ask their classmates to inspect and correct the errors. It is then sent to our research progress report area. They are also expected to search information on ships in their homes, and use email to share their information.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The difficulties of collecting Center Ship’s information: Because Mr./Mrs. Chen made each individual from each group responsible for(center ship’s origin, introduction of center ship’s factory, the organization of center ship’s department, center ship’s work content, introduction of center ship’s equipments, center ship’s running project, center ship’s shipbuilding process, center ship’s report, etc…) processing every collected material, which brought us a lot of difficulties. Besides some of the materials were not easy to find from the network, and the majority of the collected materials were only introduction of simple pictures. Therefore, we had to interview Mr. Li from the planning apartment to get written information, and be able to go farer in our Center ship report. Difficulties in making website: Since our experience and skill are not good enough, it was more difficult for us to make homepage, animation and process image files. Luckily, we had our school computer master, Mr. Kau, and three instructors who had a lot of patience in instructing us. They taught us how to process image files and skills to make homepage. Insufficient research time: We use our daily morning study period and noon break to make our research. We also had to plan the interview time beforehand, in order to avoid interrupting our art classes. We came up with the conclusion of using every Wednesday afternoon for extracurricular visits and group discussion. If we are unable the complete our work, we use our after class time, or our group leader will call every team member to discuss our problems. Then our group leader is responsible to collect and organize all problems and discuss with our tutor about the solutions of our problems. Difficulties operating the computers: Since we are not very familiar in processing image, do not have much skill in designing homepage, and are not familiar in arranging homepage, so we had to spend a lot of time practicing. Sometimes, our computers shut down in a sudden without saving our files; therefore, we had to redo our work. In order to learn form our mistakes, we learnt to make backup files, in order to guarantee the file preservation! !

5. Our Project Sound Bite

I have had a much deeper understanding to China ship’s glorious history. And I also became more interested in shipbuilding. In the research, we find that to innovate and invent are very important. Our county magistrate said, 'Hope China ship to bind with culture and go for a better development!' I think this project is very significant. It had made me learn so much and love my hometown more!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Because the school conducted the Ship Legend activity, it brought us doubts about the manufacture of ship. In order to find the answer to our questions, we decided to use China ship as our research. Our instructors instructs teacher to penetrate the question solution the way, guides us from the question to propose the special report research center question, penetrates the cross branch research (union nature and science and technology, computer teaching, art and humanities) comes the in-depth understanding question research then analysis question, and by us proposed the solution way (for example visit, in visit ship, accesses the net data collection), also lets us personally compose the research progress, the manufacture homepage and the bulletin, arranges the song sound recording, Completes an individual memoir, the penetration such thorough study process, lets us know manufactures a special report not to be easy and the earnest rigid manner

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.Exclusive network’s main engine: The school set up our own exclusive network’s main engine for us. It allows us to send collected information, pictures to the network’s main engine. It facilitate us to process works related to the homepage promptly . 2. The school’s network provides: Two computer rooms in our school, instruct teacher are allowed to make reservations of the computer rooms in the second floor (time allowed are from 8:00 ~ 8:40 in the morning to 12:35~13:30 at noon). It enables us to do data processing in the computer rooms, and it facilitates us to make discussions, so data processing and print documents 3.Internet environment in every team member’s house: Every team member should have a computer in their house, so that they can do their homework and write their daily reflections on a electronic file, then bring it to school and ask their classmates to inspect and correct the errors. It is then sent to our research progress report area. They are also expected to search information on ships in their homes, and use email to share their information. 4.Technical Equipment: We use telephone, computer, ADSL wide network, scanner, printer, digital camera, digital video camera, and recorder.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Understanding this time’s subject research plan, interacting with the people around, and interviewing people personally, writing the school’s composition, using telephones an e-mails to communicate and direct our personnel. Now let us explain how we progress: (1)Interviewing China ship First, ,we contact with the China ship’s public relation lady for a interview time, then we studied information about ship manufacture, noted down the questions for the interview, and went for our first interview with China ship (2)The people interviewed (1)Mr. Tzai Using the information of our first interview with China ship, we progressed on to our next interview with Mr. Tzai to explore our first question (2)Mr. Li We were not able to get a lot of information in our first interview, so Mr. Chen talked to Mr. Li about our needs, and gave him our homepage plan structure for reference. (3)Mr. Yien The China ship’s public relation lady knew that we had problem with the technology, so she asked Mr. Yien to instruct us. Mr. Yien was very nice to come to our school and answer the second question of our exploration. He provided a lot of useful information and gave us lessons about hull design and manufacture. (4)Mr.Hong Mr.Hong is our producer’s father, so, he showed us the ship manufacture scene. (3)Using the school’s network main engine In order to get our open our saved files easily, the school’s network main engine (400mb) was available for us to use. (4)Communicating with the parents Before doing the research, we had a meeting with the parents of our students in order to let them know our goal and we asked them to participate in every activities held by the school. They were also welcomed to join us in the classes and help us collect information. (5)Using telephone and e-mails While making the subject research, we often used e-mails to send each other information. (6)Group meeting and writing progress Journals If there were problems during our research, we would ask all group leaders to write it down and discuss about it with our tutor. If the tutor is not able to solve the problem, he would discuss and find the solution to the problem with some of the student’s parents and China ship’s engineers. We also had to write every day’s progress journal.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

While we were making this research, there were a lot of influence and impacts, but we had our psychological construction and were ready to face any difficulties. In this research, we learnt a lot about working itudes and being able to complete a whole research was our biggest progress. The following are the influence and impact that we had: (1)Class influence In order to keep up the research progress, each of us spent a lot of time collecting, reading, and organizing information, writing report and research progress, making homepage, completing he research report, organizing the interview’s content, and interviewing and everyday. We have a lot of works everyday. Apart from having to do the research report, we also have to finish our school homework. It made us feel like superman, being able to do so many things. When we saw our grades from our second month’s exam, we realized that some of the grades regressed. (2)Virus getting into the computers We need to download information from the computers all the time, and if a student’s home computer is infected by virus, it would influence our homepage. Luckily, we know a lot of computer experts(Show-jam’s dad?Mr. Huang?Mrs.Chen’s husband) that helped us keeping out of the risks. In this research, we also learnt how to avoid getting virus. (3)Influence of Kaohsiung China ship Factory In the 60's, the government carried out the ten big constructions in order to develop the economy. China ship was built at that time, and brought employment opportunities and prosperity. so“The China ipbuilding Corporation' in Taiwan actually requires the basic functions of these goals: transportation, trade, national defense, and the development of the relevant industries...etc. (4)China ship factory is a high risk industry Having close contacts with the employees and witnesses of Center ship for a along time, we realized that. China ship is a high risk industry, because big amount of the combination of steel plates are needed when building a ship and some of the employees have to work in very high place or in very close areas that does not have sufficient air. It is not a simple job! Besides, building a ship is a very complex and hard process, so it is hard for others to realize. Therefore, it brought us a lot of influence after making this subject research. Without understanding and researching it yourself, you are never going to find out the difficulty and sadness of the history of ship building.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In the process of making this subject research, we were lucky to obtain a lot of help from some inguished people, which includes Mr. Yien, Mr. Hon, Mrs. Lin, our headmaster, Ms. Lin, and our guardians. These people helped us walk out from our difficulties. Now, let us introduce these heroes: (1)Parents/Guardians In the interview of the research, our parents were our biggest support. They provided money and strive, accompanied us to interviews, to write report, and provided us transportation. Specially Si-Chuan’s father,( helped us collect information), Yi’s mother (participated in every activities, Yi-Tin’s mother (helped us organized information), Show-Jam’s father (helped us process computer animation and homepage). (2)The member of China ship 1.Mr. Yien In the reseach, Mr. Yien provided us a lot of information, and assisted us in the research, in order to make sure that we do not make any mistakes in our report. 2.Mr. Hon In the research, Mr. Hon provided us information on ship building and the legend of “New-Ship of Tour” 3. Mr. Li In the research, Mr. Li provided us information on China ship 4.Mr. Tzai In the research, Mr. Tzai gave us the answer which encourage us to explore our first question 5.Ms. Lin. In the research, Ms. Lin took us to visit the China ship shipbuilding factory, and introduced to us its hard-working engineers. (3)The school head master 1.????? Mr. Cheng gave us the biggest emotional support, and assisted us in solving the problems and Keh Chuang Lanan wu online concert 2.Teather Lin Teather Lin helped us make the songs of the homepage and instructed us in recording it 3.Teather Sen Teather Sen trained our homepage song chorus 4.Teather Huang Teather Huang assisted us use the computer drawing software and solve virus problem 5.Teather Lin Teather Lin assisted us on recording and taught us to fix the record machine (4)Others (people in the area) 1.Mrs. Chen’s husband He helped solve computer virus problem and fix computers 2?Colleague of Si-Chuan’s dad He assisted us in making the homepage and gave us suggestion and support on editing it

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the long 4 to 5 month of research, we learnt how to complete a research independently. It is hard to express our feeling in words, but we remembered the concept of the Father of our nation, “As long as we do not succeed in the revolution, our people will never give up”. Therefore, we kept walking, until we reach to the end of the research. In the research, we found out a lot of new discoveries, lessons and surprises. Now, let us explain it to you: (1)Discoveries 1.In the research activity, we learnt why ships do not revolve on the water. The reason is because the rudder takes control and the equipments on the head of the ship are the ones that direct the ship. 2.The speed of the ship depends on the power of the water. Therefore, the head of the ship are designed sharp. 3. The engine is the life of a ship, because that’s the part that allows the ship to move on the water
