Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is in Jhongpu Village, Chiayi County. Chiayi County is located in Central Southern Taiwan which is a country in a key position in Asia Pacific. The location of our community is on the way from Chiayi downtown to Mt. Ali where the mainly residents used to be aborigines. Thus, our community was the important central area for the contact of the aboriginals and the local people. This is a typical agriculture village which agricultural products includes betel nuts, oranges, and grapefruits. There is a famous landmark in our community--- Wu Hoe Temple, an ancestral temple in memory of Wu Hoe. Our school is close to this temple.

2. Summary of Our Project

Wu Hoe’s story is well-known to Taiwanese people, not only because it used to be one of the lessons of mandarin textbooks, but also Wu Hoe Temple is the reminder to visitors. Our school is near Wu Hoe Temple, it’s on the main road of this area. So it’s part of our community and part of our life as well. Wu Hoe was a famous hero in Taiwan’s history. The moral of his story is that Wu Hoe sacrificed himself to reform the aborigines and to change their old habit of killing people and offering them as sacrifices.Last year we researched on a prominent figure, Wu Hoe. To know more about high spots and monuments within our community, we study about the decoration art of Wu Hoe Temple this year. Our purpose is to detail its art as well as to guide the tourist.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are six classes in our school. We can get onto the Internet in every classroom and computer classroom. We have ten cumputers for students in the computer classroom and one Linux and NT Server. Now the Internet center of Chiayi County Education Department supplies ADSL to schools, and we can use IP to get on line. During the period of doing the project, we use the of computer class and breaktime of noon and Wednesday afternoons on work. There are only two members of us can get on-line at home, so we make use of the computer mostly at school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the beginning, we think that there will be a lot of information about the art of temple’s decoration on the net. However, what on the net is only the history about a temple or some specific temples. The data about arts of decoration is rare. In the progress, we have difficulties as follows:1.The written data: The data on the book usually were written by the ancient language. It is so hard for us to understand their meaning. With the advice from our teacher, we look up some introduction material from library of Unive 2.The equipment:Sometimes we met the problems about hardware broken-down such as the scanner out of work. It would delay our schedule.3.The computer and the internet: Because the data are saved on the serve at school, we have to connect with the serve to do our work. Sometimes we met the connection failure, it also counterwork our progress.4.The data gathering: After we decide our sub-topics about the study, we also met some problems that some topics are absence of data. To solve the problem, we visit some elder residents who live by the temple.5.Authorization: We have to respect the authors and the photographers. Without their permission, we can’t cite their works. It is difficult to find the original authors on the net. So we asked the director of our school, Mr. Huang, to take the photographs for us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

1.Though we cumbered by some obstacles, we tried what we could do to conquered them. Besides, our team leader is a boy good at inspiring members. The project experience made us feel about the importance about team work. 2.Cheers! I felt so relief after finishing the project. From the group study, I know my classmates much more than before. The persistence and enthusiasms shown by my members made our teacher see the other side of us. He admired us very much.3.In the beginning, some members joined the project because that they would have the opportunities to play the on-line games. But our teacher showed us the excellent previous works. These works spur our fight wills, and all of us decided to push ourselves to the limit. We did our best to complete our work. We feel proud of my team members.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The situation of combining the Nine-year Integrated curriculum in school and completing the project is explained as follows: (written by Liang Chun-Che) 1. Describing the problem in the relevent curriculum that is concerned: Through the discussion we considered that the important landamrk in our community is Wu Hoe Temple. Most students know this story; however, they don't really know its decoration art. So we agreed that we should work on research of local culture. 2. Plan the solution and the project that would be likely solve the problem. We evaluated that the combination of local geography and computer information would be the active project, so we registered in and the teachers arranged how to integrate the project into the curriculum. 3. Put the project into effect.Arrange the curriculum to integrate our project with it:(1). Integrate Wu Hoe's story into Mandarin lessons.(2). Integrate the lesson of respect different cultures and understanding the time that event happened in the history into society lessons.(3).In local culture lesson, study in Wu Hoe Temple and the place of Wu Hoe's martyring, also the tribe as well(4).Teaching Web designing skills and other computer skills.(5)In art lesson, sketching and taking photograph of Wu Hoe Temple. Studying its outward form and appreciating its joss music. 4. Curriculum evaluation and impressions: The team had self-evaluation and discussed the results of the project on Feb 24, 2005. 5. Presentation Present and introduce the project in the flexible curriculum in front of whole students and teachers at school.

We would like to give great thanks our principal who supports and encourages our team a lot. And six teachers at school who help us solve many problems, such as, computer skills, taking photographs, looking for relevant history books and document, collecting data, oral interviewing...etc. Our team members work very hard, too. Our goal is to complete the project and share it with people through the net.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the process, we learned how to operate PC and how to make homepages. Besides, we also learned other functions written as follows: 1.To hunt for the information: we got lots of related data on the net, however, most of them are incorrect. 2. To share our knowledge with others: we discussed our issues with students from other primary schools. The net compensated the inconvenience made by far distance. 3.We gained some useful abilities and skills, such as well-organization, data-gathering, good judgment, and teamwork. In addition, we knew many other ways to do some fancy effects on homepages. The study made us know the computers better and interest in some software.
