Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Panchiao, a city with the largest population(about 53000 people) in nothern Taiwan, is located at the joint of the Ta-Huan River and Hsin-Tien River. Due to the great population, many shops and stores were established in this area, representing the prospering commercial industries of the city. Furthermore, Panchiao becomes even more beautiful, prosperous and well-developed after the two major constructions, the new train station and the building of the Taipei County Government, were completed.

However, compared with its neighborhood, Taipei City, the capital of Taiwan, Panchiao doesn't have sufficient economic and medical resources as Taipei has. As a result, the residents here often travel a long distance to see doctors in Taipei when suffering from a serious illness. Luckily, the situation has changed, since Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, a famous hospital in Panchiao, keeps developing itself under the leadership of Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu.

2. Summary of Our Project

Eight years ago, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) was viewed as the biggest hospital in Taipei County, but its lack of specialties obstructed its own development. This poor situation remained until Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu came to be the director of FEMH. Based on his expertise, knowledge and perseverance, he performed many unprecedented heart operations and renewed FEMH throughout. For example, he led his team to strive for the higher quality of medical treatment and equipment in FEMH, had the hospital united with other fifty hospitals for the interchanges of medical techniques and experiences, and rooted the hospital's foundation deeply in the community by promoting sanitation education to the public. As a result of these innovative acts and improvements, he finally and successfully renewed the stereotype of the residents living in Panchiao.

Through this project, we hope that our community, our homeland and even the whole world can know how Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu with his special personalities became a successful cardiologist as well as a good mananger, led FEMH to keep progressing within a short time, and made great contributions to Panchiao area. Furthermore, we are in the hope that by reading this project, those who are in adversity can be encouraged and bravely overcome the difficulties they face at present, just like Dr. Chu's saying, 'The only way to change the dissatisfactory reality lied ahead is accept the challenges.'

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School: There are five computer classrooms in our school and ten notebooks for our school teachers to use in their teaching. We usually used the computers in our computer classrooms to get on the Internet at school.

Home: Most of our team members' computers are equipped with ADSL, so that we could surf the Net for the data we needed to accomplish our project. We also applied for a network disk to our school for the convenience of uploading or downloading our files.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. In the beginning of forming a team, we were not acquainted with each group member and we didn't have a general understanding of how to do this project. Therefore, many misunderstandings occurred among us, which extremely increased our anxiety of doing our project. This situation was improved by our teachers' consistent assistance and encouragement.

2. We tried to contact with our intended interviewees, like Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu and Mr. Hung-Chih Lin, Panchiao City Mayor, but our phone calls were usually considered as pranks. Instead of giving up, we continued connecting with them and finally they accepted our interviews. We had a wonderful time with them and finished our interviews successfully.

3. It was such a challenge that we had to work hard on both our schoolwork and CyberFair project at the same time. However, we still squeezed out several hours from our full schedule to hold a conference on the project together weekly, but most of the work was done by each group member at home.

4. Although our teachers arranged several courses relevant to our CyberFair project for us, we still encountered some problems when working on it. The following are the problems we faced:

(1) We didn't record the speeches and scenes we needed in the first few interviews due to our unfamiliarity with the operation of the pen stick and camera. The problem was solved after we practiced using the equipment at school for many times.

(2) The computers we used at home often shut down suddenly, so we had to depend on the rescue system from Microsoft to regain our data.

(3) Flash was too complicated for us to learn. We spent lots of time practicing it in order to create some animations for our webpage.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

1. We learned from Dr. Chu the spirit, 'Never give up.' and his philosophy of 'going through the challenges lied ahead with courage to change the unsatisfactory situation at present,' both of which encourage us.

2. We saw many brave fighters having a tough battle against various diseases, such as the patients suffering from heart diseases, and lots of volunteers enthusiastically encouraging and taking care of the patients in Far Eastern Memorial Hospital. Their courage, love and spirit, 'Never give up.' moved us deeply as well as made a good model for us to learn and reflect on.

3. We learned many skills, for example, using a pen stick and camera well, and conducting an interview successfully.

4. We learned how to create webpage by using Dreamweaver and Flash, which certainly will be great assistance to our future learning.

5. Teamwork is important not only in producing a good project, but also in providing the context for us to acquire the social skills, like how to work and get along with others well and happily.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Many courses in our curriculum were integrated into this project, some of which, to our surprise, hadn't been included in our blueprint at first. They were the courses of science about human hearts, geography with reference to knowing our homeland, general studies pertaining to life education and computer related to the operation of Dreamweaver, Flash and so on. We made use of what we had learned from the courses to work on our project, and that made us understand one thing that knowledge which we were acquiring at school wasn't only used for passing various exams, but it could be applied in many aspects, such as our CyberFair project.

In addition, in order to vividly present how Far Eastern Memorial Hospital operates itself as well as promotes the quality of the medical treatment in Panchiao area, and what are the local residents' responses and expectancy toward the hospital, we learned the ways to conduct successful interviews, to select proper photographs and video scenes after the interviews and to put all of them on our webpage. All of thesel needed constant group discussions and cooperation to make feasible and detailed plans beforehand, and then put them into practice. Through this process, we experienced the true spirit and the skill of working as a team, which is also one of the focuses in our school curriculum. Those are to trust others, to share both success and failure, and to finish each assignment on time.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Interviews: Visiting Dr. Chu, his employees in the hospital and the residents in Panchiao for more information about Dr. Chu himself and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital.

DV, CDRW: Shooting the interviews and converting the tapes into VCDs.

Digtal Voice Recorder:Recording the interviews. The vocal files helped us to change the interview contents into written words efficiently.

Digital Camera: Taking photos for our project, like the photos of the interviews, the relevant pictures for diversifying our webpage and the process of our teamwork.

Telephone: Using telephones, including cell phones, to contact with our interviewees, to maintain the connection between our team members.

Television: Watching the program, 'HEALTH NEWS,' for collecting relevant data and stimulating our creation of contriving our webpage and animations.

Scanner: The scanner was used in image processing.

Internet: Searching for relevant websites for more information. Uploading our project data to Internet or downloading them to personal computers. Serving as a communication tool among team members.

Memory stick: Saving the project related data and transferring them into personal computers.

Books, magazines and newspapers: Used as references for more information about Dr. Chu and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital.

Software: Dreamweaver MX, PhotoImpact 7, PhotoShot CS, Flash MX, MediaStudio6.5, MediaEncoder7, VCDCutter, Office2000, Nero Express,Acdsee 2.4 and the like.

Most equipment mentioned above was provided by our school. We feel thankful that Mr. Ho-Han Lin, who is in charge of managing all high-tech equipment at school, such as PCs, supported our project by lending us any equipment we needed generously.

Besides, we also appreciate that Dr. Chu as well as Far Eastern Memorial Hospital offered us many firsthand data, which were such a great help to enrich our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To start with, we got together and discussed about who we could try to reach and give an interview for more information related to our project. Of course, Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu was the main character, who we wanted to interview the most. After deciding our intended interviewees, we used telephones and emails to contact with them and arrange the places and time for the interviews based on their schedules. Meanwhile, we also designed many questions as well as practiced our interview skills. Because of these preparations, many local people we interviewed were deeply impressed by our performance and the questions we asked. They told us that it was unbelievable to see children like us who cared about our society so much. Their remarks and praises were great encouragement and inspiration to us, and that drove us to work on our project harder.

At first, we had thought that it would be hard for us to influence Panchiao area with our actions and project. However, due to our visit to Dr. Chu, he came out with some new ideas of holding a life experience camp. He thought that it would be a good try to enlarge the camp to six-hundred people in cooperation with a junior high school. We were very happy to hear this idea because it could involve more people to have different life experiences.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

1. We learned to respect our life, to face the forthcoming challenges and to take active, responsible attitude toward things.

2. According to the recent estimation, heart disease was the most critical disease in Taipei City and County because of its high death rate. On the basis of it, we offered a channel for the residents in our community to know what is so-called heart disease, how to stay healthy away from it, and how to search for help when it occurs by constructing a website, our CyberFair project.

3. We built the new relationship with our community. During the process of working on the project, we visited and interviewed many people inclusive of Dr. Chu and local residents. Through this contact, we knew much of them as well as collected lots of necessary information for our project, and they were also impressed by our enthusiasm and active attitude, and knew more about our school. We believed this was a great stride for the connection between our school and community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First of all, we are full of gratitude toward those who accepted our interviews, gave us advice and generously provided us with lots of relevant data and pictures. Without their help, our project wouldn't have processed smoothly and in turn been completed successfully.

In addition, we would like to thank our teachers, Mr. Wan-Kao Ke, Mr. Juan-Hsien Sung and Ms. Wan-Chi Chang, for holding the team meetings weekly for us, assisted us to analyze and organize our written drafts and project data, gave us constructive suggestions for naming the title and subtitles of our project, taught us how to make use of various software to create an attractive webpage, and helped us to translate our project into English. They, though having a busy schedule, spent time with us and led us to experience each step of project planning and practicing, and to acquire many skills, such as software operation and language translation, which are all helpful and useful to our study and life career. We appreciated what they have done for us sincerely.

Above all, we want to present our thankfulness to our parents. They not only assisted us to contact with our intended interviewees, but also supported us spiritually with their love, when we ran into difficulties or felt frustrated. For their constant consideration and encouragement, we didn't fear the forthcoming challenges, and could persistently and bravely stand up from the place where we tumbled. Thank them all.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1. The main focus of our project is Dr. Shu-Hsun Chu, who is the most outstanding cardiologist in Taiwan. Therefore, we had lots of chances to immerge ourselves into various data related to heart. Thanks to these opportunities, our concept of heart was broadened a great deal from the concrete definition and medical science about flesh heart to the abstract meaning and psychology about mental heart.

2. We found out that the effective way to protect our heart is to make our body remain healthy and our feelings joyful. If we feel something wrong with our hearts, we shouldn't hesitate to see a cardiologist for he/she will help find out the problem and solve it.

3. This project brought us to experience lots of things, including teamwork, social skills, interview techniques, computer software, and in particular the spirit of 'never give up.' We know that it is impossible for us to avoid all the upcoming challenges in the future, and hiding at the corner is definitely not a way to success. With this in mind, we have to hold this spirit to face all kinds of challenges bravely, so that we won't be regretful about our life.
