Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

They are the comfortable climate and productive land in southern-west Taiwan in which tribes are suitable for living and developing. Therefore, Makatao tribe was a branch of Silaya and established their power region from south of Tainan to the north of the KouPin river . Since the invasion of the Han, the Han got their lands by cheating and the pirates hung around, so Makatao tribe moved to other places even more to the peninsula of HenChin. Then, Makatao tribe fell away. The immigrants of the Han took the place. Who has ever thought that the land we are has been gone through histories? Who has ever thought that the ancestor has even lived in the land of the city. Look for and find out it. Let us take you to uncover the mysterious veil.

2. Summary of Our Project

Makatao Tribe had been landlord of the district of Kaohsiung. They were matriarchal society and believed Yaliju as a tutelary god. The piblic gall was their political center. Before the invasion of Han, they led a life with a happy and carefree minds. Nevertheless, they faced the attack of Chinese culture since Han's reclamation. Not only the language was assimilated and the lands were occupied, but also the identities were wiped out and hidden in the current. They were forgotten in the past of many years even more like a stanger in the current. We hope that by the research we can awake some people to support and understand the miserable history of Makatao Tribe.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We took the time of class with public duty to explore and research. The work would affect our lesson, but it had no choice such that we needed to study hard at home. In addition, we went out and visited the various museums use the two day holiday in a week. Unfortunately, the only few persons joined the activities, because others had to go to remedy schools. By our insistence we conquer the less manpower problem. For avoiding affecting the lessons, we took the noon break time and the time at home to make sub task. Then, we collected, arranged, and proposed problems in school. That was a good procedure.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have found something about Makatao that people not know. We did it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In our society curriculum in junior high school. It mention about Siraya and Makatao, but it don't explain in detail. After our research, we know it deeply, and our classmates also konw about the Makatao. Our teacher also have information to make their reference to teach students. Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The Internet and computer The library The Books The Museum oral interviews computer software telephones

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

'What is Makatao?' is what we mostly heared. Not only the younger but also the older.

We are so happy that people are interesting with our project, and listening carefully between our introduction to everybody. After we explain what relation between Makatao and our home city - Kaohsiung, people always show surprise. We think we had be an good 'ambassador'.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Because most people don't hear the name about 'Makatao'. So when they know what is Makatao after seeing our project, people always got shock. They surprise that when they walk on the Shou Mt., they don't discovery what existing at the roadside.

We hope that after our project, people can care what happen or exist in our home city.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After our teacher -- Mr. Lin say, we know that our school teacher - Mr.Lian are similar with the story about the Makatao and Shou Mt. So we ask our school teacher - Mr. Lian to introduce the Makatao for us. Mr. Lian told us many things about Makatao.

We also interview the C.I.A. in city goverment to get more information, and we did.

And our parents also help us to contact the people above. All of them are our helper, we had say 'Thank you , everybody'.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the building web pages, at beginning we did not know each others very well, we worked together and finally we made a good friendship. Even the strict teachers made a joke with us. We not only built web pages, but also got friendship and spirit of union. If there was not staff’s cooperation and effort, we could not finish the good work. If there was not teacher’s help, direction, and taking us to visit somewhere by car, we would not had the valuable data. Therefore, the works symbolize our union and the result of our effort. From the procedure, we learn how to deeply research tribes, find where mysteries are, and work together by implication. That is a great and forgettable experiment.
