Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

This subject focuses on the study of Shr-bi-hu Mountain in Junghe City in Taipei which is in the north part of Taiwan. Our subject includes the beauty of mountains, ecological environment, historic temples and sightseeing spots. Welcome all of you to visit here and enjoy your trip!

2. Summary of Our Project

We try to introduce the excellent scenery of Shr-bi-hu Mountain which is five-minute far away from Jing-ho High School. The Yuan-tong Temple on Mountains which has one hundred-year history is the most famous Buddhist nunnery in Taiwan. Various ecological kinds of animals, plants and pavilions cover with sightseeing sidewalk on mountains. This is really a good place amazing Junghe citizens to relax and enjoy outdoor activities. Welcome your visiting here and enjoy the beauty of Shr-bi-hu Mountain!

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We suggest that besides the server in school computer classroom, each of our team members should prepare 256Mb flash disk with us in order to save collected data more conveniently. In this way, we could design webpage both at home and school and upload collected data without any delay. If the document in mainframe is somehow loss or destroyed, we could still regain it with flash disk.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Actually, our team members seldom experience problems as for the designing, techniques or layout of the project pages. The biggest obstacle we do encounter in the course is how to translate all the concerned information we have gathered into explicit, understandable, and natural English. When translating pages, many proper nouns do confused us. We are afraid that our translations may not express the exact meanings we want to give. Hence, we consult with historians, biology teachers and English teachers to help us. In addition to language translation, students’ security is another concern. As to teachers, it’s difficult for them to ensure each student’s safety when we go out of school for interviewing and data collection. After all, accidents always happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Therefore, every time before we set out for, our schoolteacher insures us against accidents. Insurance is important for our team to make sure our safety.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The most meaningful parts of creating Cyberfair project are as follows: 1.By interviewing local people and researching referable information, we found the beauty of Junghe City that used to be forgotten. 2.In the process of interviewing, our team members knew the past, present and future of Junghe City. 3.By establishing website, school teachers, students and their parents could know much more about the culture and history of Junghe City.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Learning is both a journey of pleasure and a thrilling experience for all of us. At the beginning of the project, we had no idea about each other neither nor potential ability of each team member. Thanks to schoolteachers, we overcame many technical problems about designing website, collecting and analyzing data, and Chinese-English translations. In the process of researching, our team worked together and learned to help each other. Every one was improved and got much closer than usual through . Though frustrations sometimes depressed us, we would never give up because the difficulties were always solved through our efforts and insistences. In these few months, we all tried our best to take advantages of computer in researching useful and related information and designing project pages. No matter what grades we will get, this research process will be the most wonderful memories in junior high school days. As our teacher said, the method of the project is high-tech and scientific as well as the involvement is a world of fun to the students! It is really an extensive and diverse project.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Tools used: 14 Computers, 2 digital cameras, 2 scanners, 1 projector, 2 printers, 2 notebooks, 2 digital video cameras, 11 flash disks

Software used: Win98, Frontpage 2000, PhotoImpact 7.0, Word 2000, Namo 5.5, Flash Mx, Cuteftp, Dreamweaver Mx.

Most useful tools: The digital camera enables us to take snapshots and convert the photos into the computer without any delay. Flash disks are also very convenient to save documents we collected. As to sofewares, we don’t limit to particular sofewares for using those we are familiar with, such as Frontpage2000?Namo web editor?PhotoImpact?Flash…etc.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our team members act like “ambassadors” to introduce our homeland to the people all over the world. We interview Liu Tsung-chu (Vice Mayor of Junghe), the narrators of The Associaiton for the Cultural and Historical Studies of Tiong-ho Town, local people, Fan Wen-hui (Head of Chin-Chang Alley), Wu Ming-hsueh (our school Principal), and Dean of School Academic Affairs Department. We contacted with the interviewees by phone before calling on them and E-mail them our interview questions in advance. In the process of interviewing, we arranged one student for shooting, one for sound recording, one for notes taking and other team members helped to work up and analyzed the contents of interviews and put the information on our website.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project is about local descriptions of culture and history in Junghe, focusing on Shr-bi-hu Mountain and sightseeing industry. Because Jing-ho High School is located fifteen-minutes far away from Shr-bi-hu Mountain, it is convenient for our team to search and collect useful information about our project. Thanks to many local people who help us a lot in our community could we complete our project. In terms of the process of researching, we become more confident and more informed about our homeland, Junghe City. Through our pages, more foreign visitors will likely be attracted to visit sightseeing spots of Junghe or to have a more profound and knowledgeable trip here. In this way, this project really not only benefits the community but also improves knowledge and abilities of our own. We are deeply moved by the hospitality of the local people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We should never have been able to complete this project without the help and supports of local people. In the process of interviewing or collecting information on Shr-bi-hu Mountain, we contacted with many local people, like visitors, those citizens exercising early in the morning, vendors, climbers of Mountain Climbing Association…etc. They were highly interested in our project and give us their knowledge and living experiences enthusiastically. We also cooperated with The Association for the Cultural and Historical Studies of Tiong-ho Town. The historic narrators in the association gave us lots of useful information about our project. Besides, we were informed by the head of local district with plenty documents about Junghe history. At last but not the least, the school and the teachers always gave us the proper suggestions and help when we were in needs.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In achieving our project, we discovered that everything we see around us involves some history, which we used to ignore before. This discovery converts our attention on the past and stories of all the old structures in our hometown, Junghe City. Junghe City is such a good place that has good environment, good location and good local citizens. This research project was an excellent opportunity for us to prove our abilities no matter in school textbooks or extracurricular knowledge. In terms of researching, we realized that culture and history of Junghe need to be handed down with generations and all of us should be responsible for protecting the land we live on!
