Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

This is the only one street in our life at the mountains. It was named “Taiping Old Street”. Why? Because it hidden many pasts and life of the ancient people. So we call it “old”. As same as tea and the plums of Chiayi get older and get scented. As we must pass the 36 U-turns and we can widely overlook the Chiaya-Nan Plains. Go to the road No. 162 Chiayi, there are 36 U-turns for ten kilometers. And go up to the 1000 meters elevation. You could see a small plain, which is Da-Pin, the old people named it. Bamboos, Siaozih Path, Plum Blossom Path and Jhushoushan surround the Old Street, which is the main place of the village people lived. It is not only the market of all kinds of economics but also the source of bad-guy from mountains. More than one hundred years ago, our ancient parents moved from Fu-Jian and opened up this ground. Old Street is the most important center of the Taiping's development. The people were attracted by the beautiful views and wanted to find out the special.

2. Summary of Our Project

We followed the traces of the Human Being--- listen and interview with the very aged people. Imagine, make-up, frame, mold, and rig out those pictures of memories. Happily sing and the imagine notes come from our mind. Maybe we desire to feel, to touch, and to move on. Rebuild the hidden shapes, materials and the path of the ancient people. We hope to draw the outline of the street's history and rich the feeling of our hometown. At this moment, this old street is walking to us from the past. We try to catch its (shadow) through our hearts, eyes, hands, ears and mouths. Appreciated the tiny crack of the time's space, we get together at now. In fact, we gained the wisdom from the seniors how they treat the old street and the others- humans, things and events. In the other hand, we expect to condense the sense to it. There is a lot of wisdom, which tap out from the life. We start from our original mind. And try to represent the figure of the old street and deliver our deep love by actions. It seems like having a life and keeps on going. We wish to enrich and spread the deeply feeling of this small village.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Almost of our families don’t have a computer, if have, there is not any Internet hardware. So, we surf Internet at school. In the computer room, the computers are very old. In order to update the data immediately, we went to the Teachers’ office and using the computers. In the end of the researching, there is some recycle-computers were sent to us. We very appreciated that we could finish the research record in our own classrooms.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A. Activities More, Children Less There are a few students in our school (Grade 4-Grade 6). Everyone must take part in each activity. So, everybody got a lot of work to do. Especially, the students of the Grade 6 and Grade 5, we get baseball team, recorder team, Piao-Cha-Shih (make tea), pottery class, prepare the party in the end of year and so on. We used the break, the noon-break, and the time after school and day off; try to find out the history in the time’s crack. At last, we can feel it, and touch it and we are in it. B. Lack Technology Equipment Digital Cameras, a scanner, recording pens, digital video cameras, computers and key in the material; most of them are new for us. We learned them at the first time. We always failed at the beginning time. Learning typing costs a lot of time. We had spent a lot of time to re-key or asked teachers. Some of the tools are borrowed from the Principle. Happily, we learned much from this research, we helped each other and we felt the great achievement in our heart. C. Lost Focus At the beginning, we did not know how to break the ice and did not catch the points. We asked the funny questions that not our themes or topics. Even we did not know what we could say. Luckily, our teachers would show us how to do. They would let us think or discuss for a while. Step by step slowly, we involved ourselves in it and some kind of feeling that sprout from our mind. D. Contact the Objects From the beginning, the seniors did not trust us-the younger children. They kept an icy manner in our study. It is difficult to get their consents. We were very glad and thank that some of uncles helped and accompanied us to visit the seniors.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the beginning, there were tens children running up and down in the street and the alleys. The grand parents smiled and looked at us that we played for fun. Teachers have encouraged and eulogized us by heart. The impetus of searching the Old Street blew up like the firecrackers in the activity of community - “The Way of Tea”. The influence was powerful. Each person was moving without ages and care about Old Street. At that day, we walked on the Old Street with touching. When we read our reports of the study to the others times to times. It was nervous at first, then was honorable and finally was appreciative. This participation in International Schools CyberFair. Let we see the value of our own culture and represent the glorious Old Street. We learned many ways - how to ask, to write, to say, to see, to read. We know how to save the material, how to present it and we conquered the problems. We learned and found that we got better and better. Learning some important things about live, we were awared ourselves changing. At last, Old Street would be the great memories but not a temporary recall.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In Language: There were not enough documents about the past of Taiping Old Street. It could see in the Local historical records that is only very few and an outline. At right now and right place, we tracked down the oral account history that the seniors got from generation to generation. This is full of the humanity. When we were listening at the same time our feeling went with the sound. Every action needs the kids to write in the sentences within their feeling and thoughts. All the children were afraid of the composition. But there were a lot of writing work at the beginning of the study. We hoped this activity could impel their motives in writing and remove their dislike and dread. The children ability was well progressing day by day and could not reach the top in a second. In Art and Humanities When we discussed to the target of examining about Old Street, we put the point in movements? At the same time we rebuilt some of the utensils. The thought and hardship of the forerunners were lasting in the children? hands in that moment. This is going to show the endless and diversity of Old Street. The children have gotten more and more confidence and see the beauty of Old Street. We were proud of it. In Social Studies Go out of the school, you can see the people? religion and the life style of the people. The classroom is in everywhere. Be the expositors, they afresh knew their hometown and told the stories in their own way that let everyone could truly understand Old Street. They sheered enthusiasm with their childish language and the passion. Those visitors walk in the archaic street, here is the seed of the hope. Science and Technology The mountains children rarely contacted with the tools of technology. For this study, they knew them and those tools caught their young-eyed. Recording bar (pen) can record clear and completely. 125mb disc man can easily save the files. Surf in the web was more frequently. Update the progress and the reports. Fix the pictures, scan within the IrfanView or beautify the photos. In School-based Curriculum: In the beginning of the semester, we focused on the local humanity town? cape, animals, plants and reading as the main frame. We designed a serious of Integrated Curriculum for above subjects. The study of Old Street expanded the wide and deep in our topics. Adding the “alive” humanity is the essence of the in School-based Curriculum.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

PC: Update the reports, key-in the writing, sort the pictures, and scan the pictures. First, we used the PC in the teacher? office. On November, the school got a notebook. At last month, we gained a second hand PC in our classroom that we can do anytime. Scanner:First time use it. We scanned our handwriting or drawing into the computer and sent to our web pages as the material. Disc bar (125mb):Save the files easily. Digital recorder bar:This is a great tool. It can re-record and save the files. When we kept busy with the speaker face to face, we did not need to worry missed something or talking and writing at the same time. The data can send to the PC for long time saving. Besides, it is cute and tiny. (PS Teachers lent them to us.) * Face to face interview Digital camera --- Long time ago, people used the traditional camera cannot see the pictures right away. It was a pity to get a lot of bad shots. Now, the Digital camera is more convenient and can see the picture instantly. It is an easy tool. Old photos---Gather from the seniors. We seem see the pictures are saying and back to the old time. Questionnaire -- The questionnaire helped us to review the focus of the study. In this activity, we directly met the villagers and they knew what we did or offered some suggestions. Internet access -- The blue tooth and bandwidth network are the way we update the data and look others work. We also can communicate through the net. The whole world cannot live without the net. Even the teashops are on the Old Street. Books and newspapers--- Our paper source is from school? library and Mr. Cai. We gained further understanding about the Old Street. But there are some difficult descriptions that we could not get it.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We did a lot of real actions in our study. Such as we hold the post of the expositor and Piao-Cha-Shih (one infuses tea). Then there was a delivering ceremony. We attended many communal activities and asking the whole villagers to join us. Because the principal and Leader of administrator stood by us and invited the Media visiting. Let everybody know our Old Street and our effort.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our study inseparably consisted with the communal development. In beginning we are a tiny screw, we never gave up to contact with the villagers. Finally, they knew what we did. The Old Street is alive now. No matter a child or an adult would do one? best? For example the Way of Tea on December, we saw our parents spent a lot of time and energy on that. There are many Media asking the interview. Someone opens a Chinese teahouse. The teashops on the old street altered their decoration and desired to be newly. Our study had stopped, but it is the departure of Old Street.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our data can apart to three parts; the past, the present and the future. The past we quoted from the 'Meishan’s Place Name Tracing' and 'Meishan Township Cihong Tan' published by Meishan cultural and educational foundation. The older people offered their old photos. Others we did by ourselves. Everyday we read the books or others, our teacher reminded us do not be a pirate. If you want to quote someone? work, you must get an agreement from the author.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Our house is on the Old Street, we ignored it in past. In fact the people give the power to it, it also is our truly companion. We conquer our weakness in this project. For example, we have chicken-heart, dumb, whispery or no writing skill and so on. Surprises! Our Old Street attracted the considerable people. Of course we had done something on it. We feel full of the power and inherit the history incorporeally. In our actions we get the path breaking spirit of the ancestors. We met in the space of the time? crack with the past, and hope to create a brave new future! Here everybody and us have a new wish and foresight. Hooray! We are proud of being here and did this project.
