Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

“Tungmen”means the level ground on the foot of mountains. The road was built in 1918, of which the pass produced copper named “Copper Pass” by Japanese consequently.

Our school is located in Tungmen Village, Xiu-Lin township and the school districts are Tungmen and Rongshu communities. There are almost 98 percent of Truku (one of the Taiwanese natives) people, who almost have been engaged in agriculture and industry. We still have kept the simple folkways.

The cross-island highway has already built during the period of occupied Taiwan. The route that Japanese planned is not today’s Central Cross-Island highway, but have constructed along with the old path (Tungmen to Tungli).

2. Summary of Our Project

Hualien Mukua stream runs through Tungmen that is one of the natural resource Tungmen people have depended on living. It is closely linked together them to influence their living style. It reveals itself more important Consequently. Fish bred in the stream where is also considered as the best place for fishing to the villagers.

The main influent in upstream Mukua - ChingThe characteristics of the river fits to generateshui stream originates from Nen-Gau Nan Mountain (3349 meters). It wholely shows the curve flow. Near Lungchien has Dragon and Phoenix streams flow together into the main influent. The gradient of river beds and flow in the main stream and the influent in Mukua are all big to carry sandy soil, so it forms valleys and alluvial sand in the middle and down stream. Dragon and Phoenix streams built the Shuilien, Lungchien dams and Tungmen Power Plant have the characteristics of the river to fit generating, they supply the eastern Taiwan power.

There has been a power transmission line named Wan-Tong Line existing from occupied Taiwan up to now. Its magnificent view to make people relaxed and happy. It probably is a good example joining preservation and development in Taiwan where has kept hard ecological environment.

Mukua stream and power plants are the precious water resources in Tungmen. They are even the important natural resources for the creature and inhabitants depended on living. Mukua stream and power plants have the functions to regulate and benefit rivers and protect the environment hence named 'Tungmen blood'.

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

1.The computer equipments in our school: (1.1)The computer equipments: Two servers, one computer classroom. (1.2)Teaching: Students in the fifth and sixth grade have taken computer class from 1991. Students from in the third to sixth grade have also taken computer class until 1998. (1.3)The sources of funds: Each student has paid the maintenance of equipments each semester from 1998.

2.The situation of using computers and applying in teaching: (2.1)Computers applies in school’s administration: There is one computer at least in every administrate office. Also, hold the contest of finding information. Jointing every teaching to finish the works. (2.3)

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.We have been done this research for the first time, while we didn't how to progress in the beginning. Besides, it is somewhat limit in the technical support. We have learned not only record, to make questionnaires, use the digital camera also make a basic homepage, animated program under some guide teachers. Moreover, we have understood how to communicate well with others and make notes. Also, we have learned the manners to interview the people.

2.Plenty of computer books have given us help except the support from guide teachers. We do appreciate the teachers who have supplied the relative information and pictures. We also want to thank all companions keeping hard during the time. It has been working smoothly because of everyone's cooperation. It is believed that we have got a lot of knowledge from taking part in the research.

3.After the accumulation of experiences and direction from teachers, we have getting to know that we have to cooperate and communicate with each other, how to arrange the working schedule in order to do thing well. The members in this research have been discussing through the team meeting. We also play roles before performing the work items to handle the contents and scheduled progress proficiently. Certainly, we are all confident to the whole game.

4.The most difficult thing is that we always stammer to speak nothing or could not help shaking in interviewing to the members. Afterwards, we would prepare what we want to interview in advance then to practice how to ask questions. We have done getting well little by little not as we did before.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

As matter of fact, it is more touched to explore the ground and concern about what happened to us than the profound knowledge and the most advanced learning.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.Education determines the future of Taiwan, and teachers determine the education in Taiwan. Keep making progress on teachers’ specialty is a very important process while teaching. From this activity, we realized that students performance should be evaluated in many different ways; while in class, we should limited ourselves in a classroom, instead, we should go into our village, get along with our society to enlarge students’ viewpoint. Stimulation in whole direction would make students to develop their best potential; and it helps the progress of this project. It also makes students understand that every little success accumulated over a long period would achieve a great business!

2.2.science and life:Knowing how to use modern technique equipments.

2.3.language:Improve reading and writing skills.

2.4.Ten basic abilities:Totally involved in this activity.

3.Students begin with knowing something about their village and gradually finish this local textbook. Students understand that the power plant in our village has a great distribution for eastern Taiwan—even the entire Taiwan as well.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.interview:Present the purpose for our visit when we interview with the staffs of Taiwan Power Company and let them know more about our project.

2.field trip:While we visit Hydro Power station on Wednesday afternoon or the weekends, we made voice recording and take digital pictures all the way through the trip. In this way, students would take home our experiences and results on the trip for sharing with parents.

3.outside-school visit:Through the visit to Keng-Sheng Daily News and the searching for old newspapers enlarge the participation and cognitive part of students’ and makes students try to be a more suitable “ambassador”.

4.parents’ participation:Thanks for parents’ great help on traveling outside the school. Upon the participation of parents complete the goal for making progress among parents, students and teachers.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

When the government removed some rules about going to the mountain area ten years ago, many people tried to visit and discover the mystery of Mukua stream and Chung-Yang Mountain. Thanks Taiwan Power Company for built up an impounding dam and a power station at Mukua stream as well as the policies that government carried out for controlling the entrance to the mountain, so that people still could see both human and natural sceneries along the stream.

The mountain area around headwaters of Mukua stream used to be the hunting field of an aboriginal tribe—A-Taiya. Due to the policy of wild environment protection, made it a stop for Ataya’s hunting activities. Five years ago the government tried to put fish in Chin-Sui stream around Tong-Men Mountain, Mukua mountain and Wu-Mao-Tzu Mountain for breeding. Mukua stream is a witness to the history of Hualien. It also makes a perfect balance between ecological and hydro power.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Many students' parents are very friendly. They give us a hand about: 1. contact with interviewee 2. plan consulting 3. take part in the interview 4. help with vehicle 5. feedback

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1.findings:Because of various kinds of natural factors makes Mukua stream the most valuable river of hydro-power.

2.lessons:Power supply in Taiwan would never catch the speed that people waste. People have to learn how to save resource right away.

3.surprise:Thanks Taiwan Power Company for built up an impounding dam and a power station at Mukua stream as well as the policies that government carried out for controlling the entrance to the mountain, so that people still could see both human and natural sceneries along the stream. It also makes the balance between ecological and hydro power.
