Kui Hui is located by the side of Dahan Brook, at the front end of Loma Road, looking towards Fusing Farmstead in a distance, the upstream of Shihmen Dam-A Mu Ping can be seen from a far distance, which is a water source preservation area as well as a beautiful scenic resort. There are abundant tourism resources in the tribal areas not known by the outsiders. For the ones that knew about it all gave it thumbs up to express their praises about the place. The sacred mountain of the Kui Hui Brook’s water source-Na Chieh Shan, the fossils by the brook, Gasenou Tribe, the Kui Hui Tribe on both sides of the brook all the way to the Jhentou Mt. on the other side of Kui Hui, are the location of abundant resources of which we are going to explore in more depth.

The change for the theme of the project from “the Leaping of Kui Hui’ Passion” to “Weaving the Heart of Kui Hui” to “Joyful Paradise”, with once and again the focus is surrounded upon of Kui Hui Tribe. Hence, it is our plan to devote our best effort in the exploration report for every item and scenic spot that is worth the introduction. Because it is our opinion that Kui Hui is really an extraordinary place, we hope to introduce it to everyone through this project, and to invite everyone to share with us the result and joy of our study.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1) Technical obstacles:

Very often, the data entered in the computer at the computer classroom could not be saved, which created a lot of inconvenience. After the assistance from Mr. Wu Yueh Hsien, Ms. Chian-chih Leng, Yu’s father, and Ms. Chih Hua, the work was able to resume without a hitch. Digital camera and recording pan also break down at the critical moment due to insufficient power, which has been solved by using a set of electric charger and put a student in charge of it.

(2) Language communication:

After interviewing the elderly for once or twice, the interviewee would often unable to respond to the key point of the question due to poor language communications. Therefore, an interpreter will be arranged to assist in the communication for all interviews thereafter in order for our interviews to proceed smoothly.

(3) Personnel collaboration:

Since our Little Digital Hero lives in various tribal areas respectively, with ones who live farther away from school are confined by the school bus, hence could not stay after class to participate in editing works, creating afterthoughts reports, etc. After conferring with everyone, the students who lives close by the school to stay behind for assistance on the weekdays; and the ones who live farther away and did not have to go to the church worship would come to school on Saturday to help out.

(4) The imminence of time:

There are many activities to participate in this semester for the six graders in particular, as there are class type, school type, extracurricular type, township type, and city and town interchange type, at least one to two activities per week, which takes up a lot of time planned for the project. The teachers have asked everyone to cherish the available time and to put more devotion with the heart and mind, so that the time spent will not be a waste. Although there are some complaints by the students, however, they have all sacrifice their recess time between classes to finish the work progress each one is responsible for.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

* “Convenient others is convenience for thyself”, “Respect thyself, respect others”, is the basic principles for how we associate with others.

* “the bonding developed from interaction, mutual trust, mutual understanding, and helping each other is what we cherished the most”

* “In order to inherit your own culture, must first understand your own culture and accept your own culture”

* “Caring about the nature must first start from being close to nature in order to feel in-depth the true, the good and the beauty of nature.”

* “Love your homeland, care about your land, in order to own a happy heaven.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project is an integrated study primarily based on the theme educational activities “Weaving Heart of Kui Hui” with the standard school courses-information, weaving, dancing, and mother tongue. The data will be included in the database of the standard courses edit by school to provide the teachers a study model in native education, ecological education, and tourism resources.

Participating in this project has allowed the teachers to become a learning type organization. Through continuous discussions and coordination, the teachers can contribute their specialties in various activities and familiarize with the project history and technique to establish professional knowledge and skills for the later studies. At the same time, to enhance the individual professional image and spirit of the teachers during the course of unregretful devotion.

The first-ninth grade curriculum alignment reform emphasizes in the integration between academic subjects and the practical application of the academic subject capabilities. Under the proper planning by the teachers, the students can really experience the integration and application of each subject through the actual course of the study; and to achieve a great sense of accomplishment after the completion of the webpage construction. It is our belief that this successful learning experience will help their later independent learning as well as enhance in their learning interest.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Internet, television and VCR: for viewing and searching for the related video information.

2. Digital camera, DV camcorder, scanner: group member pictures, activity photos, and activity information.

3. Tape recorder, recording pan, computer software: oral interviews

4. Library: books, newspapers, and magazines

Video taping enables us to record the course of interviewing, operating, and visiting, and then put all these processes on the internet to allow viewing by more people. Picture taking allows us to keep the memories of the project process. Books, newspapers, magazines, and internet can bring us the related information and saves us a great deal of trouble in trying to understand many things which we didn’t know before; the scanner and computer software enable us to exhibit the collective data to everyone in a beautiful and orderly fashion.

Among which, one PC, LCD display, one digital camera, one DV camcorder…were donated by ET Mall.com.

To us, the computer was the most valuable tool because it can link the internet directly to find the information we needed, which has been extremely convenient. Without the help of the computer, we wouldn’t know how to make the massive amount of data we have collected to be viewed by others. Thanks to the internet access, all data can be put on the internet website for other’s viewing; also with the convenience brought by digital camera, DV camcorder and recording pan, we no longer confined by the time and place.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1. Interview of the elderly: through the opportunity of the interviews to explain to the interviewee the theme and content of our project.

2. Have the ancient historical tales narrated by the elderly: inviting the elderly through school for an opportunity to tell ancient historical stories, and to make an introduction to the teachers, students, and parents about our activities program and the job positions we serve.

3. Activities flyers: creating a flyer that includes all the scheduled activities to inform the people in the community what types of activities are taking place.

4. Invite the parents for participation: encouraging the parents to become a member of the Taiwan Schools Cyberfair to join in the project activities.

5. Participation in community activities: Through the participation of the community activities, to allow more community residents to be aware of the theme and contents of our study.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By participating in this activity, we have come to know many big brothers and big sisters as they have taught us many new thing about the computer; allowing us to realize the world of computers are not as narrow as we thought, but only broader than we could imagine.

They have traveled a long way from Taipei and Chungli every week to conduct lessons for us, even to skip their classes sometimes. You see, they have sacrificed their own time and energy for us with great devotion. Regardless of physically or individual needs, they always gave their best efforts to make thing perfectly. Hence, we have developed a very special bond between us.

Surely, through a series of interviews and field survey activities, not only we have gained a better perception about Atayal culture as well as a clearer understanding about the life of the natives. Furthermore, we had an opportunity to personally experience the scenic spots and the abundant natural resources of our entire Kui Hui Tribe.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Parents

1. Assistance, giving interviews 2. Proved transportations 3. Program consultation 4. Traditional craft arts guidance

Community residents

Providing information

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The first time we have heard from the teacher the word “Kui Hui means big rock in mother tongue, because there are many rocks on the sides of Kui Hui Brook”. However, during our interview with the tribal elderly, they’ve told us “the name ox horn was originated from the topography resemblance to the ox horn, which ox horn was also adopted as school mascot”; and during the recording for the mother tongue, Director Ching-yuan Chian also said: “the name antler originated from many spotted deer used to be around Kui Hui a long time ago. Which saying is true? Since there are no recorded writings in the books, verifications is still needed.

Every time the inputted data were wasted when accidentally touched the keys that shouldn’t be touched, hence, we are more careful now as the data is saved in shorter time increments, and even saved in different locations.

Via the serious interviewing, we have discovered many Joyful Paradises belongs to the children, which we will be exploring more scenic spots after this activity has come to an end.

This activity will not end because the program is over; not only us, but there are already more students who are willing to learn with us and allowing us to continue our discovery for the parts of Atayal culture that has yet been understood.
