Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Without the prosperity of a big city, Hualien is the rural one with friendliness and unsophisticatedness. Enclosed between the towering Central Mountain Range and the azure Pacific Ocean, Hualien owns some beautiful countryside scenery, rich natural resources, and unique humane property. The Heart Lotus Ward, set up by Tzu Chi General Hospital, is the first palliative care ward for terminally ill patients in eastern Taiwan. The Heart Lotus Ward was established in Hualien where is the right place to practice the concept of 'respect life' and humanity. In addition, it fully reveals its characteristics of love and concerns, and helps terminal cancer patients complete the last part of their lives with dignity.

2. Summary of Our Project

Recently, the rate of committing suicide has increased year by year, so “commit suicide” has jumped into the top-ten death illnesses in Taiwan recently. Actually, the choice of committing suicide can not solve any problems and it just leaves so many painful burdens for the other people, it is really not a wisdom decision to do so. There are even extremely cases that some people they carry their children to end their lives, or they set up fires and bring the harms to other people. Hence, the Life Education in schools is becoming an important task nowadays. The spirit for Life Education is emphasizing on respecting your life. No matter you are poor or rich, destitute or wealthy; we need to treasure and to respect every life, even for those very ill patients, they should also have their proper care and dignity.

In our school mainly we rely on Hualien County internet center, by 1.5MB/56K ADSL internet system to get online service. But mostly the students use their home internet facilities after their school time; some of them use 56K modem connects to differential service providers, as well as some of them use ADSL internet usage (i.e. ADSL) to get online service.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First Difficulty: We are the final year junior high school students!!!!!! As the third year junior high school students, we have so many tests and exams everyday, and together with this time the internet Fair activity, it is such a hard job! When we have exams then we have to stop working on internet work, hence we did not have enough time to do the internet pages works at the beginning, but luckily sometimes teacher allowed us to use class time and lunch bream time to use computer room, hence the shadow of out internet pages thus appeared little by little. Second Difficulty: Not efficient technical skills!!!! Since beginning teacher hope we can create a internet pages work with lots of pictures and with lighting. However, there is no one ever learn Flash program, so we just have to do self-study on computer skills, after few failures and experiments, finally we got the result in the end. We really can feel sense of accomplishment! The third difficulty: Just before our internet pages nearly done, when we prepared to present the internet work to teachers, suddenly teacher announced that computer has got virus!! So we could not save files, cannot use mail box, and surely we can not get online service this function. This is a really shock news to us, teacher also try to solve the problem for us however there is no tools beside us to fix this computer problem, so the only thing we can do is to re-do this internet page again. In order to avoid the case happen again and there are half of the computers also got virus in the computer room, so teacher let us to use computers in another office, luckily our pictures were still fine and some information was kept well, so we could run through with smoother process this time, although it is still a tired work!!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Life is just like the process of fading flowers, it is a nature way. So to live our life with serious attitude, to show up our colorful parts in our life, when the time we face to death then we will no longer feel scared.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school arranged the life education as one main issue in educational list, besides, Student Consultant Office also arranged “life concern week” in our term timetable. Together with “hungry 30 hours” and “bringing love to elderly and children care homes” these activities to enhance our data and information. As well as this is a way leads us to think about a life with a manageable methods.

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Technology used Content used Digital camera, DV Digital cameras and DVs are used to record the process of conducting the study project. Telephone Telephones are used to conduct interviews. .Pen shaped tape recorders, tape recorders Interviews are recorded and saved digitally. They is also recorded in detail. Scanner, printer, Fax Image processing is made with scanners. Printers print information for reading purposes. Books Search of related books will compensate the areas of study and interviews which we do not understand.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

When we told the doctors and nurses 'Heart Lotus Room' the thinking and destination we want,they surport us . We also got many inspirations from Mr.Shie's book.We got his permission to use something from his book.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After many people viewed our website,they think our topic is meaningful. They think it makes them to know the life more completely. In order to finish the work,we went out from school to the place that we have never been to,and knew the kind of people that we have never met. It’s so amazing for us to have such different experience.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We appreciate the ones who help us. Our parents, teachers, doctors, Mr. Shie, and the patients who we visited, and their family. We especially thank for the translation of Miss Wei Yu. With their help and encouragement, we overcome many difficulties to present our work to the public.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

After fishing visiting these people, we found out that to live in good health is so wonderful. They are suffering from their illness. They can't eat and sleep well. Without complaining, they bear their heavy burden and live bravely. Being a healthy student, we should cherish what we have and keep the faith 'Seize the day.'
