Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our hometown, Kaohsiung, is a sunny city in southern Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Decades ago, Taiwanese children had their own ways to spend free time playing hand-made traditional toys and games. Yet, our children nowadays can hardly experience these traditional folk games in this highly developed city, Kaohsiung. For this reason, we conducted our learning project with the hope to share it with the young generation.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It is not easy to conducting our learning project. First of all, the teammates are from different classes at our school. For this reason, we could hardly find sufficient time for every teammate to study the project together. Besides, most of our teammates were too busy to do field studies on weekends. This pushed us to make great use of our lunch break for several months. The last and the most difficult problem we had to overcome is our project domain. Children’s folk games in Taiwan is a quite new and broad project domain to study at present. Though this, we made it at last.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our teammates are from different classes. Though this project at Cyber Fair, we got much more familiar with one another and learned to work as a team. Also, our schoolmates were very helpful with offering us essential information as well. To our great surprise, the history of the traditional children’s toys and folk games in Taiwan are so amazing that we couldn’t help but play them ourselves again.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We are pleased to take part in International Cyber Fair. It helps us better understand not only the process but also the reasons why students should learn to do a web-based project collaboratively. This project helps us to develop critical learning skills as follows: (1)Internet Skills: We learned to search for a wide range of information on the Internet and put our Internet skills, such as website construction and information management, into practice. (2)collaborative skills: This learning project is not merely a team report. It requires a finely divided team work among the teammates as well as strong team spirit. We learned to divide our tasks and play better roles according to individual competences. Moreover, our teammates also developed a strong team spirit to complete a challenging mission. (3)English competence: English is neither our native tongue nor the second language in Taiwan. With the hope to introduce Taiwanese culture to international friends, we asked our English teachers to guide us to translate our Chinese project into English by means of revising electronic translated texts.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

(1)Digital Cameras for taking pictures. (2)Computers for managing information and constructing the website. (3)Cell phones for keeping teammates in touch. (4) Scanners for digitalizing valuable pictures. (5)CDs and portable CD drive for storing data. We would like to express our gratitude to our school, especially to those teachers offering us advanced equipments, such as digital cameras, computers, scanners, and so on.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In addition to search for necessary information on the Internet, we also designed a questionnaire to survey our teachers’ general impression about early children’s folk games in Taiwan, and interviewed with some parents about their childhood. To recover the traditional children’s games, we looked for antiqued toys in small towns like Mei-nong, etc.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

There are significant differences between traditional games/toys in the earlier generation and those in the so-called E-generation. Traditional toys and games were mostly reused products full of children’s own creativity and imagination. These games were satisfactory to their innocent hearts.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In the process of doing this study, we enjoy helping our people to recall beautiful childhood memories in Taiwan history.
