Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei, a populated area; Maokong, a place full of cultural with a silent atmosphere. In Taipei, we always make contact with the newest science, technology and knowledge, however, opportunities of interacting with the ancient culture are rare, fortunately in Maokong of the Wenshan area, filled with the arts of drinking tea, we understand what is not found in books: The Chinese tradition diet.

2. Summary of Our Project

The tea history, nearly as old as Egyptian pyramid. In the development of human history, the tea continuously follows the Chinese people to move towards the modern civilization from the primitive society. Tea has already become an essential material to our life. With tea literary arts: poetry, dance, drama, and myth are all created along with the tea drinking culture, causing the tea drinking culture to turn into an important traditional Chinese culture.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We have three computer labs at school; we use the one we usually have classes in. All computers are equipped with AMD K6-2-350 processors running at 450Mhz. We use a private ADSL line for out network needs, it's speed isn't very stable, at high peek times the speed goes up to 200k per second, but during heavy traffic periods it can be as slow as 50k per second (sometimes slower). Luckily, not many people use the school's network during the winter break, so we were able to get the most out of the internet connection, with almost no downtimes, we believe that our project will be unique to others. Most of the students on the team use have DSL at home, only a few still use dial-up.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Because we have rushed to build up our team, the members were strangers to each other at first. It was hard to set the right meeting times, induce our narrative introduction(From deciding the subject, collecting and interviewing data, to make the website at last.) is very hard to go on. ◎Exams Exams, this is the reason that our data collecting has quantum leap until the middle of December. And the days before tests, considering every one’s exams, we couldn't go out interviewing and borrowing books.(It’s because our parents will not be happy about it.)So we can only use the lunch hour to amass members and let us have the best acquaintance about our narrative introductions target and purpose by documents or parol. But we are lucky that our alliance let the exam problem effectually solve. ◎Data Collecting The data about tea, not only books but also the information from the internet is very abundant. And it becomes our big problem because there are too many repeating, or superfluous data. At last, we divide the work in collecting data, arranging information, and adorning essays, so we could solve this problem. ◎Interviewing Our interviewing work began in the late December. The experts’ interviewing at the beginning, though our members weren’t all present, it still went well. The teahouses ’ interviewing at last was the real problem. That day, our members were all present. But in Mao-Kong, sometimes the distance between two teahouses is very far, and there were some accidents on the way, induce the time was not enough. So we can only interview the last teahouse by telephone.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

To realize tea can affect our life a lot, and mixes the art and the culture in life together, so after deeply knowing the tea culture, we heightened not only our knowledge but also the cultivation on our mind.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Many people think of Japan when they think of tea ceremony. But after all, the culture of tea in Japan was come from China. This time, our narrative introduction was like finding the subjacency, the culture and the genius loci of tea in China. We put all the data we have on the internet after arranging. We hope we can let others see the spirit of Chinese tea ceremony.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1.Cell phone--Members can communicate at the real time. 2.Telephone-- Have some conversation with other experts or members. 3.FrontPage 2000-- Making the website. 4.PhotoImpact7.0--Making images. 5.Internet--Searching data. 6.MSN--Members can interchange the data on line. 7.Record Pen-- To record the interview. 8.Digital Camera—To take some important pictures in the interview. 9.DV—To register the interview. 10.E-mail—To send the data or communicate on holidays. 11.Fax—To give some data to some experts.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

From internet to books; from teahouses to tea experts; from the general to the particular, we acted as “ambassadors” by a lot of people and things. We can’t explain it by words in a short time, so we use listing to indicate. The chairlady of Chinese Tea Experts Society Liao Chun-Yu--- She recommended all the knowledge of tea for us and talked about the tea experts’ concept of the place and spirit in the Chinese history. She also told us about the difference between Japan tea ceremony and Chinese tea ceremony, and the change of tea. Mei-Jia Teahouse~Jhang Mei-Jia、Jhang Rong-Fa--- They accepted our interviewing and answered our questions clearly. They told us a lot of things about the process of making tea and recommended the tea-making machines’ function.Miss Jhang Mei-Jia usually travels to a lot of countries, so she told us the foreigners’ concepts of Taiwanese tea and Chinese tea ceremony. Nai-Miao Teahouse & Jhang Nai-Miao Memorial Hall--- Nai-Miao Teahouse told us a lot of things about the tea expert- Jhang Nai-Miao and the teahouse masters’ knowledge about tea. The masters of Jhang Nai-Miao Memorial Hall also let us take the pictures in the hall kindly. Because Nai-Miao Teahouse has operated for a long time, they have experienced the silver age and the letdown of Taiwanese tea. The masters of Nai-Miao Teahouse and Jhang Nai-Miao Memorial Hall told us about the history of tea and people’s different feelings about tea from the beginning to today. Yuan-Syu-Yuan~ Jhang-Jhe-Jia--- Yuan-Syu-Yuan is the most classical and clinquant in all the teahouses we have interviewed. When you walk into the teahouse, you can see small bridges and water, spring, summer, fall, winter, orchid, bamboo, anemone…… there are many classical and graceful boxes in it. And the upstairs is the best place to see the beautiful place. Cherries with the green mountains and Taipei. Yuan-Syu-Yuan, a beautiful teahouse, and its price is also the highest. Yao-Yue Teahouse--- Yao-Yue, the most famous teahouse in Mao-Kong and Taipei. There’s no important reasons, only because the way it operates is the most successful in Mao-Kong. Its lodestar is “Customers are always the best.”24 hours operating to serve all customers all year. And the price of Yao-Yue Teahouse is nice for students, so it’s very popular.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project is a very treasurable experience for all of us. It let us experience and realize tea culture’s abundant. And because of the cultures’ implication, we have listened to a lot about art, humanity, poetry, books, paintings, and the relationship between tea and life. This project not only heightens our knowledge but also brings the freemasonry and trust between us. And it also educated us the concentration and identification. In the process of making this project, all members tried to do their best to collect, to arrange, and to make the best project for us. And the interviewing is a seldom experience and challenge for us. We tried to interview like professionals and write down the answers quickly. We did it as none-experience. In this project, we got a lot of indescribable experiences.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1. Jhang Nai-Miao Memorial Hall--- The master explained the items of making tea to us. 2. The chairlady of Chinese Tea Experts Society Liao Chun-Yu--- She recommended all of things about tea to us clearly. 3.Mei-Jia Teahouse--- They accepted out interview and told us a lot of things about tea. They also let us visit the place to make tea and recommended the process of making tea. 4. Nai-Miao Teahouse--- They accepted our interview and told us lots of things about the tea expert-Jhang Nai-Miao 5.Yao-Yue Teahouse--- They accepted our interview and told us about their concept of tea and tea food. 6. Yuan-Syu-Yuan--- They accepted our telephone interview and answered our questions clearly. 7. Taipei City Guan-Yin Tea & Bao-Jhong Tea Generalized Center--- They let us visit the classical tea books and tea-making machines. 8.Tian-Ren-Ming-Cha They accepted our interview and let us understand the consuming condition of tea in Taiwan.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Live and learn is a quote that discribes our thoughts as we made it through the whole research and finally completed our project. We couldn't have completed this project, if it wasn't for all the help we recieved. Thanks everyone!
