Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tzuo-ying is at the north part of Kaohsiung City and its west side is the Taiwan Strait. From the ancient time, it is noted for the Wan-dan Port. Its north part is Half-side Mountain and the south part is the Snake Mountain. In the middle, there is the Lotus Lake connecting the Turtle Mountain. This place is developed very early and is noted for its traditional villages. The charms of a city could be showed in its culture and its art, literature, architecture and so on. An old city could survive in this age is because it release its vitality consistently. The Wan Lien Festival is a stereo type of vitality show activities. The first product the Fire Lion cookies combining with local specialty is made out under this situation. Let's exploring the utopia in Kaohsiung by the Wan Lien Festival.

2. Summary of Our Project

Shin-lon Village is the old name of Tzuo-ying. For located in an important military strategy position, from the Ming dynasty to the Ching dynasty, Tzuo-ying is a vital base of Taiwan. In Ming dynasty, it is called Wan Lien District and Later on in Ching dynasty, it is called Feng-shan. Nowadays, it is still make people respect this place and be proud of it. When we are doing this project by the views of humanity, geography, scenic spots, religions, features and so on, we found that Tzuo-ying is such an ancient town that it has so many treasures for us to discover and cherish. The golden ager we interviewed once said, 'this place is covered by the white clouds and filled with peach flowers. You can not find this place whenever you want because this is the place better than heaven.' Therefore, to make this place maintain it superiority, we have to work together and float with new hopes. Only by this way, we can all reach this utopia.

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the whole process, we can say that there are so many problems delaying us. After solving one problem, another one comes up. Problems are like distribution of personnel affairs, information collecting, project planning and so on. And one more serious problem for us students to face is to gain a balance between our academic performance and web pages. Especially when we are in the last stage of the project, the final exam came and we can not meet all the time. Besides, parents are another problem that we have to overcome. For Chinese parents hope that their children can only concentrate on the academic performances rather than other affairs. And the school work in the eighth grade is particularly stressed. There is really little time for us to look after both sides of things. These are the gates we have to go over.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Face the music is the faith we hold and consist. At the beginning, we knew nothing about our project, but after we moved away all the obstacles and solved so many problems, we started to go on a better way. Experience team work, researches, interviews and finished project, we all know that we can not do without any one in our team. And I believe this project is due to our efforts.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

When we are doing the web pages, we realize that the precious culture, customs, humanity of Taiwan are the first thing we contact to our learning. Through information collecting, interviewing, editing, and so on, we learned it is not only a simple contest of web pages, but also a learning for students. We learned to introduce the local specialties, history, and geography to people, and we find that those information once occurred in our history and geography text books. Some stories are told by our parents. It comes to that life is learning. We integrate everything we learned into this project and its web pages. And we recall our memories of what we studied before to learn more about this project. In fact, doing web pages is like reading a book. We have to do it step by step and read it chapter by chapter. Besides, we learn from other people's work and make improvements on our work. We do really learn a lot from this project.project and get improvements every day.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used some softwares like Frontpage and Visio and Office, amd so on. The most particular part is that we connect 'human' as a tool. That is, we had some enthusiastic parents to offer information they know about our project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

It is an encounter by accident that we had a great helper in our team to support us to be ambassadors. When one of our member, Yu-wen, she told her father that she would like to become a participant of CyberFair Contest, her father decided to help us as a volunteer. When we are wondering where to start out project, he recalled that he once lived in Tzuo-ying and study in the local high school for three years. After graduation, he had ever lived in Tzuo-ying Stone Tablet Area (Zen-fu Temple) for more than eight months. And he is quite familiar with the local situation and he thinks that Tzuo-ying is a place full of beautiful sceneries and nice people. It worth discussing and exploring, and we can have a study of Tzuo-ying's past and nowadays. He offered this idea to Yu-wen and the whole team second to this suggestion. At that time, one of our members, Yu-lan, told us there will be a one-week long Wan Lien Festival coming up. Thus, we decide to study the local features. And Yu-wen's father went along with us, naturally he became the ambassador of our project, and we became smaller ones. He helped us to collect the information pamphlets and brochures, and interview people. Not until we devoted ourselves to this project do we know the hardness and pains of the study. We had the thought of giving up several times, but Yu-wen's father always encourage us to keep going on and told us that he believe there will be a great outcome. We were inspired and decided to hang on this project and finish this project. Honestly speaking, Yu-wen's father is our most important supporter and help us to stick on our goal.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We learned lots of experiences that we hardly meet in our daily life during the making of the project, such as keeping collecting information, interview someone in person. These are very precious experience that we will recall in the future. By doing this project, we keep digest different knowledge to understand the human culture, geography, features and its beauty and tears of Tzuo-ying. And those are we had never discovered before.

In recent years, Tzuo-ying started to hold Wan Lien Festival and try to unite people's power and belief to rebuild the beauty of Tzuo-ying. Besides, they want to construct a prosperous future of Tzuo-ying and make known for the world.

We hope that whoever view our pages can really know and realize the beauty of Tzuo-ying. To know more about her history and culture, and to cherish it to our offspring's.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the process we met lots of problems. The first thing we thought is to ask help from our instructors. We do really appreciate our instructors for devoting themselves day and night in this project and helping us thoroughly. They teach us about computers and web pages. We learned how to beautify our web pages and solve problems. Moreover, our teacher has to keep us working on schedule, which is really a big job, too. Undoubtedly, we want to thank people who live in the Lotus Lake neighborhood and the chief of Tzuo-ying. Without their help and advices, we can not make it. We do really appreciate the chief telling us every thing he knows and he remembers and share his experiences of Wan Lien Festival with us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

From the moment we start visit Tzuo-ying, we find novelty every day. Recording the beauty of Tzuo-ying is like walking in the utopia where is filled with breeze and sunshine. Sailing on the Painted Boat on the Lotus Lake, the beautiful scenery would make you feel like in heaven. Besides, the variety of Wan Lien Season is plentiful. You can see the freshness of Tzuo-ying and it brings prosperity to this old community and regain its fame and wealth. As you can see, there are many temples in Tzuo-ying; that is, temples are the specialty of this place. Take the Confucius Temple in the neighborhood of the Old Town elementary school for example. It is a representative of historical sites. The Old Town Gate of Tzuo-ying is a calling for the past. Though time goes by, people still remember the honor of Tzuo-ying in old times. As time flies, we should write down another new chapter for the 21th century.

The lessons we learn from this project is that we should seek for the truth for what we want to know. Either to people or to affairs, we should look into its background and content rather than Just know its superficial part. Otherwise, you can not have a well-done project. Moreover, we learned how to cooperate with others and work together. If you do not catch up your schedule, there will be troubles of webpage making. If you do not work with every one, there will be no efficiency. Also we learned how to use our time well, though we did not work hard as never take a sleep, we learned how to use shopped time to finish our work.
