Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shen-kang originally belonged to Hsien-hsi Pao. But Shen-kang grew faster and faster and there were more and more rich people. In addition, it was far away from Hsien-hsi, so it was not convenient to do some work. Therefore, Mr. Chou Chien, who was the leader of the county at that time, suggested that Shen-kang should be independent from Hsien-hsi. Then SHen-kang Hsiang was born. Originally, Shen-kang was named Hsin-kang. However, there was also a Hsin-kang in Chia-yi. Hence, Hsin-kang in Changhua had to change its name into Shen-kang. But the residents were not stupid. You can try to say these two names in Taiwanese. The sounds of the two names in Taiwanese were the same! Chuan-tseng is a small village in Shen-kong. It is a place that everyone is familiar with. That's not because it's famous or it is always reported in the newspaper and is worthy of visiting more than other villages. It's just because this village is the same as our own house. The biggest difference is that there are many abundant historic sites, cultural legends, sources recycling and so on. All of these are the reasons that our village is worthy of visiting. We sincerely welcome you to visit us.

2. Summary of Our Project

The teacher gathers a group of passionate students to take care of the places they live. The purpose of the project is to let students love their own village and learn by doing. Our goals of the project are to understand how to observe, find, analyze and compare, to be familiar with our own hometown, to become a volunteer of tourist guide, to learn how to have a interview, and to make web pages. There are four major points that we want to do. First, we will find out how each attraction appears by having interviews. Second, we will find out how each site becomes so popular and how we can attract more tourists. Third, we will find out what each site needs and how we can help them. Fourth, We will make some ideals come true, which are learning by doing, learning by serving and cooperative teaching.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Problem 1: To prepare before the project. When preparing for the project, we didn’t know how to start because the field is too wide. Besides, we didn’t know how to interview and whom to interview. Solution: We surfed the Net and learned the advantages of the works that have been awarded last year. In addition, we asked the experienced classmates to give us some suggestions. Problem 2: Computer ability. Because all of us were not very good at computer, we didn’t know how to deal with the materials and pictures on the computer. We were also not familiar with the structure of web sites. Solution: The teacher opened a computer class for us to take and we gathered together to have a group discussion. We also asked the teacher to teach us more about the structure of the web sites and then had a brainstorming. Problem 3: To carry out the project. When carrying out the project, we didn’t know what to write and what materials we have to look for. Besides, we didn’t have enough materials and our project was lack of pictures. Solution: The teacher taught us how to look for materials we wanted. Then we interviewed the village head and relative people, went to the library and surfed the Net. About the pictures, we found time to take pictures that were missed. Problem 4: Learning by serving. When we had to show the tourists our village, we didn’t know how to guide them. Solution: We listened to the teacher carefully and have read the materials many times. We also rehearsed several times because we didn’t want to miss the chances. Problem 5: Interview. The interviewee spoke too fast and his attitude was not good. Solution: Though we felt frustrated, we had to go on our interview. We used recorder and took notes to help us remember the contents. The more we tried, the more we learned.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We hope to create a diversified and lifelong learning environment, learn the living and useful knowledge, and show our strong feelings to our hometown. And we make it.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

(1) Professional teaching: Cyberfair project is an activity for learning. Especially we get involved in history, Chinese and biology. Therefore, after we finish the project, we can provide more information and teaching plans for the teachers. In addition, the teachers also learn a lot by joining the activity and they can make their teaching more livelily. (2) School: This project not only makes our school develop a special characteristic but also integrates the community sources. We also have more information about our hometown to teach students. (3) Nine year joint curriculum: The integration of subjects is a hard job. However, this project makes it. (4) Ability learning: From the process of project, the interaction, negotiation and cooperation between us and the solution of problems are what we learned most. (5) The role of the school in the community: The project shortens the distance between the school and the community. We also prove the pluralism of school education. Learning is lifelong and is not restricted in any places.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

(1) The equipments from school: video and digital cameras, scanners, printers and newspapers. They are used the most often and the most valuable tools. We use them to take pictures and record the contents of interviews. (2) The tools donated from the community: recorders, papers, pens, telephones.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

(1) Telephone directory and call out: Searching for the relative members. (2) Interview: Collect the materials and solve the questions. After we interviewed the village head, we deeply felt that the people who really wanted to do something for their community are very friendly. This makes us feel warm. (3) Join the tourist guide: To get in touch with the tourists face to face and ask their feelings. (4) The help of parents: Ardent parents provide us many ways to have contact with the relative people. Because one student’s relative works in the farmer’s association, we easily got the information we want. It saves our time and energy. (5) The help of teachers: The teachers arranged the first interview and then we made appointments by ourselves.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Speaking of impact, we find that our hometown is so beautiful, and the culture is so abundant. Besides, we also discover that we accomplished so many things. We not only help clean the surroundings but also sort out eth data. Best of all, we even have courage to be a tourist guide. Furthermore, the residents in the community are so friendly. They help each other, and help us solve some little problems. They even treated us. It’s our pleasure to be a volunteer. We feel so great. About the lashing, we feel disappointed with the disagreement of some people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1) Clerks in the village: They accepted our calling on. Besides, they not only taught us how to ask questions but also encouraged us. They are just like our own elder members of the family. (2) Farmer’s Association: They provided us the relative information and held an activity of training volunteers. (3) 7-11: They accepted our interview and promised us to support out project and the following activities. (4) The residents in the community: They corrected us and taught a lesson. Besides, they gave us support. (5) The administrative personnel at school: They provided us many interesting stories because they just lives in Chuan Tseng Village. (6) The pedestrian: Their cheer made us forgot the tiredness.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The teacher: From the making of web pages, what I impressed most is the interview with Mr. Huang Chin Chuan, who is a villager in Chuan Tseng. He’s the most ardent young man I have ever met. What Mr. Huang said deeply touched me. Besides, the interview with the stationmaster gives me a lesson. If I’m not well-prepared, I can’t join any contest. Thanks all these people. Students: At first, we strongly suspect our own abilities. But after the continuity encouragements from the teachers, we found that our potential is so strong. However, we do not clearly understand the concept of the construction, so the schedule is delayed. In addition, teachers feel worried about us. Nevertheless, we still try hard and do our best to overcome the difficulties.
