Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Chien-Chen River starts flowing from Fongshan Lake’s Tachiouchutang mountain area, passing through Fongshan, Mazhu harbor, then down to Chien-Chen area, which is why the locals named it Chien-Chen River. The river circles the Chien-Chen area, and on Chien-Chou road meets with the Chingshan opening of the sea. Full length is about twenty kilometers. The early Chien-Chen River was very wide in width, with clear and transparent water, and it is said that people used to rely on its fishes and water for survival. It is also recorded that, Chien-Chen River have washed down large amount of rocks and mud from the mountain, which accumulated mostly on the river mouth to the sea. In order to open up the harbor, the Japanese sent ships to excavate those rocks and mud from the bottom of the river, and laid them on (what we know of today as) Chien-Chen Middle School and Shinkang Metal Industry. During Industrialization, many chemicals and wasted water was washed down the river, causing severe pollution and unpleasant smell, which is why it is call “Black River”. Currently, the Kaohsiung City government has introduced a “River Water Conservation Project”, in the hopes of improving the river situation, and one-day return to be the beautiful river it once was. Whether the project will succeed, is still something to look forward.

2. Summary of Our Project

Chien-Chen River is our place, development on the river is our community’s responsibility, specially to the teachers and students from Shiren Middle School, it is something to be excited about and look forward. The School, in order to allow students to have a first hand experience with the development project, designed an outdoors teaching system. In addition, to increase our interest and participation, we designed questionnaires to help us interview families and community elders, in the hope of obtaining many stories and legends about the Chien-Chen River. Mr. Huang Yiming, some who cares very much for the community, also wrote four educational materials about local information for the school, which helped us understand more about the local community and history of the place. To everyone at Shinren Middle School, Chien-Chen River is our neighborhood, so since the development program, we have very much wanted to use the opportunity of making the documentary, to ask everyone a few questions: 1. What caused the river’s pollution? 2. What methods and information has the government use during the development program? 3. Has the development program affected local people’s life? 4. After the project, were the estimated results achieved? 5. What hopes do we have for the future Chien-Chen River? We also hope to use the recorded information from Chien-Chen River’s development project to improve environmental protection methods, to love our homelands and nature itself, and to continue cleaning Chien-Chen River and our souls.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Currently, our school has one computer classroom, where there are forty-one stand-alone computers. Including modems and administration parts, the entire school has about a hundred computers networked. The entire school network is connected to Kaohsiung’s main network, thus, connected to entire Taiwan network. During daytime, the computer classroom is a facility opened for students, or administration computers can also be used. After school, there are some help researchers who have computers at home, with ADSL connection, which is helpful to get access to internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We were very confident when we decided to join just research, because we all believed we could finish it. This confidence helped us to open a smooth path for the future; we all had the same target. Although we were all in charged of a different task, but trusted each other. Now that you know this, you probably thought everything went well, right? Because we had confidence and trust? We also wish so. But, we do not have super powers, we realized that the tasks assigned to us were not at all easy, because none of us knew much about Chien-Chen River, which made it very hard. Further, work volume increased day by day, to be honest, we didn’t know if we could make it. But, because we had teachers’ care and help, it made us all more relieved, which helped us overcome the difficulties.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

1.Wish…, that it will be come true, that this land’s love and recognition will increase each day. 2.During every passage, we had one target in mind, hope that to this land and to environmental protection, can one day strengthen, to make the land we live on much more beautiful. 3.The main aim to an improved community is relied on the care of every member of the community, to have similar goals for the community area, and to give to the community. 4.The main aim to improved environmental protection is to love our homeland and our nature, to non-stop cleaning Chien-Chen River, which will also clean our souls.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our research project, regardless of the process or the results, meets the school’s nine years of research motivation, which means it can be incorporated into its nine years of educational material, the reasons are as follows: 〈1〉 To increase the school’s database in this field 〈2〉To increase learning ability and provide new learning experiences 〈3〉Plenty of educational programs increase students’ interest in learning

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

★Main Hardware Equipment★ Digital Camera(Recording Images) Traditional Camera(Recording Images) VCR(Recording process Images) Printer(Printing Images) Television(Printing process Images) Stand alone computer(Research information, create website) Labtop(Research information, create website) Scanner(Processing Digital Images) ★Used Softwares★ Internet Explorer(Search information and communication) Microsoft Word(Organize word documents) Ulead Photo Impact 8(Create and modify images ) Flash 5(Create animation) Dreamweaver(Create and modify websites) Microsoft Frontpage(Create and modify websites) CuteFTP4.0(Forward websites into network)

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through interviews, we gained insight views from interviewees of the Chien-Chen River and its surrounding communities, from which during the process we also shared with them our feelings and thoughts. Families participating together in the research interview and teaching programs, has helped a lot with the research, from which parents also provided many information. We thank students’ parents! The people from the community were very welcoming and caring, they provided historical information, helped editing materials, helped dividing the work, and participated in the events organized, which gave us a whole different view of the community’s care for this area. Based on our research topic, using email for communicating with experts and government representatives, have given us positive feedback, which helped with gathering many valuable information. Regarding Chien-Chen River’s topic, through participations of all students and teachers, highlighted our topic to the local community, encouraging them to participate in our events, which received many positive feedback also.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During this period with Chien-Chen River, has given us many feelings and thoughts. We thought of the community, our living city, our land, our students, teachers, community people, living all together in this place. Kaohsiung City always gave people the impression that there are many people from outside Kaohsiung, a city that has many immigrants, specially Chien-Chen and Tsawei areas that have suffered from sixty to seventy years of industrialization movement, receiving large number of immigrants from other cities. In addition, labor force immigrants have been very small around the area, which caused the environment quality to go down. During the research process, we deeply felt that the community’s non-stop improvement has been its main target. We need to treat the community as everyone’s root, which will allow us to think about the future, and work together for a better society.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1)Parents: During the research process, we often need to use weekends to do the interview work, with parents helping us with the interviews, writing the reports, solving transportation problems, etc. Their support is our most valuable part of the project. (2)Community people: Mr. Huang Yiming, Mr. Huang Chienchen, Ms. Liu Meiling, who have helped us with giving us many valuable opinions and provided us with written information. They have also designed several educational material to aid us on the process. (3)Government: The Kaohsiung government’s head of water conservation team: who helped providing online information. The Kaohsiung government’s head of repair water conservation team: who provided with detail information about water conservation.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Having lived here for so long, I feel that I have such a shallow understanding of the place and the community. But after the research project, we systematically organized all the data related to the Chien-Chen River, and made some research on the people and culture that surrounds it. In the process of gathering all these information, we only hoped for one thing, that is to protect the community and the environment, to make this place more beautiful. The main need for the improvement of the community is still relied on the people of the community, whom have similar goals, and are willing to give time and effort. Since the development program, the community’s standards kept increasing; hopefully Chien-Chen River will be the main reason to improve the community. I would like to contribute this research to this community.
