4. Problems We Had To Overcome

From the projection, interview and webpage production, all the process demonstrated is our harmonious teamwork spirit. During all the preparation period, we have overcome various difficulties. Because the membership of DNA Team is composed of the volunteers from each class and the elites selected by teachers, they initially belong to different classes of no availability to make acquainted with each other previously. In addition, during the contest period, all the members must also spare their own time for academic affairs, test preparations, school anniversary festivals, chorus practice, class union conference and the activities for diplomatic heralds. Indeed, there are numerous members must make good preparation for their own tests, paper creations and activity involvement existing the hardship for overall team players together at the same occasion. Even if we make use of every probable lunch rest time, there are still some members absent from our meetings trapped by other activities with the difficulty to assemble all members together for detailed discussion. Every one is quite busy in their own daily schedules without sufficient time for them to spare for this activity. Under this tight schedule condition, we are forced to lag the pre-set plan schedule behind with many times to abandon this activity almost. Fortunately, because each member is fiercely driven by their own strong sense of responsibility to win the honor for our school, we would make ourselves well known to the whole world that we are the very proud VGH-YMU Team. It is additionally facilitated with the assistance and support from our generous school principal. Thus, it seems that every one will always offer the timely cooperation whenever any one is deep in trouble. If any one is facing with any problems, they would then raise their own problems immediately and every one could communicate to one another by E-mail and Messenger or we could take our class-off time for detailed discussion with the best solution concluded. Although it would happen to little dispute oftentimes, yet we would never leave our efforts resulting fruitless consequence. The strong will and stamina really make us hold strong till the last moment.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

By means of the involvement of International Schools CyberFair, what we have learnt is not merely the technology about webpage editing but also abundantly unexpected novel experience. For example, we have make acquaintance with the eminent figures who we never know before with the best availability for us to prepare for the interview occasion with them. During the interview activities, we also paid the visit to the precision genome sequencing and research instruments, and we were deeply impressed with their engrossment on their jobs, really broadening our own envisions consequently. Dr. Ueng-Cheng Yang kindly made a brief for us and explicated some ideas within our scientific brief. We came to realize the secret of Bioinformatics and the importance of Genome Research. All our team mates were then deeply touched by their excellent achievements. Furthermore, what impressing most is the saying of Chief Yang and he said: “Thinking is the best essence!”It is a simple word but abounds in the actual life influence. The thinking makes up the creation and the creation brings in the improvement. The very reason for Human Civilization is based on the scientific thinking. Hence, the cultivation for scientific thinking is fairly important and it is quite thankful for the enlightenment of Chief Yang!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

After actual participation in the International Schools Cyber-Fair, our results are composed of the interview with the relevant figures in VGH-YMU Team, photography record, information collection by visiting National Yang-Ming University and the Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, information compilation, and knowing the research theme of Genome Research Center sequencing. We had actual experiences with numerous and sophisticated instruments, and the absolutely full concentration of researchers. We were really shocked by their excellence and engrossment. Such a predominant scientific research behavior is quite suitable for scientific discovery and academic activities! According to the development summary, overall learning and human development proposed by the Taipei Education Bureau, the educational motto of our school is “Macroscopic Vision”, “Progress Making”, “Health”, “Vigor”, “Information”, and “Life”. We expect our students to hold the macroscopic vision and progressive attitude; meanwhile, they can express their own mental and physical health and vigor in order to enrich their life by using their own informational technology. Through the involvement of International Schools CyberFair, this valuable opportunity allows us with the accessibility to keep in touch with the world-class researchers about Genome Research Center closely related to the very origin of life form. Thus, we can widen our scientific view with the macroscopic attitude cultivated; at the same time, during the interview period, we can enhance our progressive impetus to raise the problems, collect the relevant information, and also demonstrate our mental and physical health. During the production procedures of web pages, it is available for students to utilize their own informational technology capabilities and personal talents and creativities to diversify their surroundings. It is very helpful for our educational ideals of complete learning and overall human development!

At school, the soft wares we adopt for web page editing include: Ulead PhotoImpact 8, Ulead GIF Animator 5, Macromedia Flash MX, Microsoft FrontPage 2002; at home, there are many class mates using the advanced soft wares like Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, together with other applets such as: dBpower AMP Music Converter for the audio file conversion, the recording programs for music editing, MS Painter for image processing…etc. At school, we also utilize the UMAX scanner and the books relevant to computer software technology. Within the mutual communication and connection, we mainly connect with each other through telephone, cell phone, Yahoo Messenger, Email, schedule report and the FTP system. These applications make us availably work during the China Lunar Year holidays.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to complete this theme research project, we had to contact and interview with the members of VGH-YMU Team. Initially, we refer to the telephone number and Email of one member from VGH-YMU Team. Thereafter, we started the first phone contact for the polite regards with the best availability to reach them. The communication context had been well written in project records. Our teacher, Mr. Hsiu-Yi Wu makes this phone call with the member. Fortunately, we finally reached one of the manager of VGH-YMU Team, the chairman of Bioinformatics Department in the National Yang Ming University: Dr. Ueng-Cheng Yang's assistance Miss Branda Huang; meanwhile, we also got her personal E-Mail in hand. Thus, we discussed the theme project and the affairs we are engaging in school with her by Email. It is very lucky that we received the positive reply from her soon. Dr. Ueng-Cheng Yang was then willing to spare his tight schedule available for our interview and also promised us with the apparatus photography from Lab ABI 377 and Lab ABI 3700, together with the relevant website information sources. The interview time was then scheduled in the afternoon of 4th of December (Thursday). We offered him our most sincere thanks in excitement. Our school principal, Mr. Kuo-Chen Tai also supports this project enthusiastically. During the interview day, we were ready for a visit gift and went with our class mates in merriment. We had listened to the kind and detailed brief made by Chief Yang, together with warm reception visiting activities, including the computers control room of Bioinformatics Department, National Yang-Ming University Genome Research Center , the laboratories of Department of Medical Research and Education(MRE) in Veterans General Hospital-Taipei and precision instruments. The scientific lectures were respectively made by Dr. Ueng-Cheng Yang, Dr. Tze-Tze Liu, and Dr. M-y Chung. At last, every visitor, including students and teachers were also presented with the souvenir mugs and ball pens of VGH-YMU Team. They look so precious and collectible and we all like them very much. We deeply admired and tanked for this warm reception. It is typically an invaluable and unforgettable visit with much learned!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through the involvement of this theme research project, we leave our school out for the practical experience of interview, record, problem raising, information collection, information compilation, and theme webpage production. We did not merely have the fantastic opportunity to visit National Yang-Ming University and Veteran General Hospital, together with their affiliated research institutes and Labs. We also experienced with the intimate interview with the worldly well-known scientific researchers, together with the kind and detailed scientific brief made by Chief Yang. Our own biology knowledge initially confined tour junior high school or high school biology textbooks, had finally been broadened into further realization in the enormous field of Bioinformatics and DNA with our ceaseless excitement and curiosity. By visiting the computers control room of Bioinformatics Department, National Yang-Ming University Genome Research Center , the laboratories of Department of Medical Research and Education(MRE) in Veterans General Hospital-Taipei and precision instruments, we had listened to the deliberate scientific lectures made by Dr. Tze-Tze Liu and Dr. M-y Chung. Although it was then difficult for us to know well about the lectures completely, yet we were still impressively moved by the engrossment and research spirit VGH-YMU Team. All these experience were well proven to be invaluable yet unavailable for class study. From this interview, we came to realize the biological technology extremely related the Human itself. This field will be definitely accepted the increasing emphasis gradually. We also believe that the biology technology will take the mainstream placement to supersede the information technology someday. We had edited the theme web pages from the information collected to introduce the whole world with our pride of VGH-YMU Team, and hereby, we also admire the achievements of VGH-YMU Team worthy of our reverence and imitation.
