Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hsinchuang is one of the areas in northern Taiwan that has the earliest development. During Chia-chin Emperor ruling, Hsinchuang once to be very prosperous. It was known for its prosperity and was the commercial administrative center and agricultural town in northern Taiwan. Today, Hsinchuang has even faster development. The establishment of Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County provides a leisure place for the people here to relax.

2. Summary of Our Project

The establishment of a place is usually carried out step-by-step. The establishment of Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County has brought about a concept of exercise. The question is how people will use this place at different times of a year. What kind of feeling will people develop about Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County? Our research project would like to explore all these aspects. We hope the love that people here have for Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County can spread around further.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The common lesson that the whole team had learned was “boldly asking brought about fun in learning.” At the beginning of interviews, file transmission, and webpage production, we were very shy and didn’t want to trouble others. Consequently, we wasted some time. A worse scenario was that we still could not solve the problems. Then, we finally got our guts together and asked for assistance. Then, we realized most people were very friendly and we often got more than what we wanted when we asked others for help. With their help, we were able to solve problems in time. This experience has made all of us braver. Even when people did not want to be interviewed, we would not feel too bad

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have used a lot of information equipment. The information office in our school and Teacher Huang have both given us a lot of technical support. Our web pages are completed with the help from Teacher Bo-jun Huang, Teacher Yi-bing Chen and the information office in our school. Among all equipment, we liked digital cameras the most because, using these cameras, we could capture the beauty and good ideas we had and did not have to worry about the deletion of files. However, teachers might like the new computers and new software the most. All the data are presented as follows:

Hardware:

Interviews and field surveys.telephones. cell phone. Recorders. digital cameras take a orally interview provided by school Bryan Huang.scanners take pictures from pictures computer room.SONY DSC -P8 320.CDRW.Memory sticks.PC.HP Printers

Software:

Dreamweaver MX. Flash MX. Cute FTP.Ws ftp. Potoimpact8. ACD See 6.0 .MSN. Word 2000.Outlook express.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

On-site interviews were the main content of our project and many interesting things have happened during the interviews. School Principal Chin-Min Lee was very enthusiastic and the took us to talk to the President of Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. Then, the President took us to Section Head Mr. Tsai. Next, we found out that Mr. Tsai used to be the elementary teacher for both Bryan Huang and Anne Yu.

Once we made an appointment to meet one another at the gate of Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. However, Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County has two entrances: one is the front gate and the other is the gate next to the fire bureau. That day, we were supposed to meet at 2 o’clock. However, we did not see each other and ended up running around. Some people were waiting at the fire bureau and others were waiting at the front door of Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. We were curious about why Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County had its own fire bureau. Is it a prevention to protect trees in the stadium against any fire? Then, the President told us “No. When MRT construction in Hsinchuang started, a fire bureau wanted to find a home for their fire trucks and they felt that Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County was very big and was an ideal place for their trucks.”

Sometimes, we bumped into other classmates, neighbors, and students of our teachers during interviews, they encouraged us and helped us answer questions.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Because of this research project, we have learned to care more about the behaviors of people when they come to use Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. Moreover, we learned to look at our own behaviors. We care about the issues of dog-walking, safety, the use of agricultural chemicals, feeding problems, and misuse of fields in Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County. We have conducted interviews with the stadium representatives and people at different ages to understand their opinions and thoughts. We have also forwarded the information from the stadium officials regarding the use of park facilities. We were very happy to learn that the stadium officials have already paid attention to these issues. They are aware of the fact that even elementary school students care about the work that they are doing. People also know the hard work of the stadium officials. Though the work is hard, it is rewarding somehow. We have also put some advertising on our web sites and will print some materials for elementary schools located around Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our web sites were finished a little bit late. Yet when people ask about football practice on Saturday, we would become the best advertising agents. Moreover, our articles have been chosen by school teachers to be the model essays. People description and drafting interview questionnaires have become the key features of this project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We have many interesting discoveries. For example, we have learned that fight fish willl eat the baby bugs of mosquito. That is why though Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County has many flowers and plants, it does not have mosquito problems. Most parks cannot avoid this problem. That is the result of applying ecological engineering. Lessons: We once meant to meet our classmates in Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County but we did not know that there were two fountains in the park. Some people went to the wrong place. One time when we were trying to record something, we did not prepare enough tapes and batteries. We had to go to a convenience store to buy the items. From this experience, we have learned to always prepare for spares. Once we accidentally erased the recorded tapes because we did not mark the content on the tapes. Some people thought the tapes were new and used them for other purposes. From this lesson, we have learned to be more careful and do things in more detail. Surprises: We have always used Word for typing documents but this project has given us the opportunity to learn more functions in Word so we can type faster. The learning of Image software enabled us to process file names from digital cameras in a more efficient way. Different ways for transmitting files made us understand the convenience that technology has brought.
