Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan! It contains lots of organisms within high diversity. The amphibians can breathe by their skins, so they need to live on the humid environment. In Taiwan, it's high temperature and lots of rains among 4 seasons which is suitable for their requirement. From the top of highest mountain to the coast and any of the season, there are amphibians around. Taipei Country is exceptionally rich in natural resources, 2052.5667 meters in square and subtropical monsoon climate. It would affect by the North-east monsoon in fall and winter while lots of typhoons and rainy in mountainous area in summer. The South of Taipei Country belongs to Shae-san mountain chain where it rise and fall and continuous. All the streams belong to Danshuei river basin except Lanyang branch in South-east. Average temperature as low as 12.4 degree on Jan. and as high as 33.6 degree on July. It has lots of hills, mountains, rivers, and plans which construct as waterfalls, streams, lakes, canyons, brushwood, and forests and breeds various kind of organisms. Such beautiful scenic area would adapt to the frogs, and Rhacophorus taipeianus, R. moltrechti, R. prasinatus, R. aurantiventris and Buergeria robusta can observe in Taipei Country among 8 of the frogs we selected.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are 31 kinds of frogs in Taiwan which 8 are endemic species and 7 of them are treefrogs. Because the treefrogs had less activity and lived in this island since million years ago, they developed as endemic species by the geographical barrier. In other words, the Microhylidae, Hylidae, Ranidae and etc. have more activities and populations, they don't contain any endemic species.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We connect with the internet by ADSL, and fix the IP; We have one NT Server, and two freeBSD as mail servers which also add proxy. NT server is also used for WWW and DNS.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Time Limitation The deadline is earlier than before and we can just use lunch break and go to computer classroom for progress discussion and data gathering. In addition, we use the time before coming home from school. Boys treat the technique problems of computer and girls set up the word files and finally finish this work. 2.Troubles in data collection The topics we selected is hard to find the paper data, so we relied on the internet. The domain problem was complex and we looked for the professional books with the accompanying of our parents in National Library. As to the field work, we could only carry out at night though it's dangerous. We invited our teachers, advisor in NTNU, parents and volunteers to go together. Within the support of the weather, we finished field work one night and enriched our data. 3.Technical problems To promote our technique, sir CHUN FENG CHANG and TAI AN SHEN arranged lots of computational courses for the using of PhotoImpact and creating the web pages during summer vacation. Moreover, Sir CHUN FENG CHANG and GEN YU HWANG taught us how to operate Flash as the basic and advance technique, and we had enough technology to finish our own web page in short time.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

◎We knew nothing about treefrogs in the beginning but can talk about them for someone's inquiry. ◎ It's important to understand and respect the small animals. ◎ To ensure they can live in Taiwan happily, we should not disrupt their ecological environment. ◎ We can instruct the knowledge we learned to other classmates. ◎ Thanks for our school whom arranged the field work and make us interested and learn the knowledge and common sense. ◎We learned a lots in the combination of science and information through this work.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learn more knowledge and application in our daily life from this work which also facilitate to the Diversified Enrollment Scheme. 1. Social science field: We have learned about the effect of environmental disruption to the habitat of living organisms through this project. 2. Nature and life technology: The flexible using of computer for preparing web page and process of research and interview are all help us in the ability of conclusion and judgment. 3.Field of Chinese literature and learning: It increases our dialogic, writing and reading ability through the face-to-face interview, e-mail crosstalk, idea writing and progress report. 4.Ten of the basic capability: It raises our basic capability by the process of research, interview, web page making and the application of computer software. We promote our ability unconsciously through so many months practices.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

◎Image source Facilities(source)( purpose)( frequency) digital camera(School)( image record)(*****) DV(school)( field work record)(***) printer (school)( data export)(***) TV (school, home)(reference)(***) Scanner (school)( pictures digitization)(******) ◎Sound source recording pen (school)( sound recording)(***) ◎Traffic cars (teachers, parents)( interview, field work)(****) ◎communication TV (our members, school)( communication)(****) PC (school, home)( real time communcation)(******) cell phone (Teacher, classmates)( communication)(**) ◎Data gathering and arrangement TV (school, home)( data substantial)(***) PC (school, home)( data collection)(******) newspaper (home, school)( data gathering)(**) books (our library, NTNU)( data gathering)(******) library (National Library)( data gathering)(******) hard disk (Yahoo, school)( backup)(******) software (school, home)( image modification)(*****) ◎Software Name(purpose) Ulead Photo Impact 8 (image modification) Flash MX (Flash production) Microsoft Frontpage(web page edition) Microsoft Word 2000 (word process)

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We are as the 'ambassadors' by interview. Firstly, we sent e-mail to the professor Kuang-Yang Lue and appointed Sep. 23 for inquiring questions. We asked him for the professional commands. As to the field work on Nov. 5, we invited sir June-Shiang Lai in NTNU associated by sir FAN HAO WEI and our teachers, parents, and volunteers to accompany with us. We went to Wulai and observed and recorded the natural ecology.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We regarded frogs as feeling-sick and ugly as we know nothing and even thought it was the same to toads. As we investigated and understanding, the previously concept was wrong. Frogs may also have as Microhylidae, Hylidae, Ranidae, Rhacophoridae and Bufonidae if detail classified. In addition, frogs have great contribution to us, not only for dissection but pathogen identification and even medicine. We know we should devote to protect the frogs by keep integrity of environment.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To copy, download, print or forward are all the replicated proceedings defined by the law of copyright. As to the law in our country, this proceeding is specific for the right of the author and no one can replicate without the agreement of the author. We faced the replicated questions as described above very often. To prevent as illegal, we obtained the agreement of the author by the internet communication.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found an article when gathering data which described the hunting frogs in childhood but nothing to hunt for the pollution make frogs extinct. We can't fish the frogs and need to find in deep mountain and riverside. It's a satirical article and makes us for natural protection all the time or we might look for the most popular frogs out-of-the-way in the next generation. This is the moral we learned. We obtained the knowledge only by internet before field work, nevertheless, we felt it's cute and shy as seeing the real treefrogs. We were scared at the piece of mouse skin when return and felt the animals in Wulai are terrible. The Wulai would not only for entertainment but the nature we won't see in a city.
