Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Liu Ting-Tsuan grew up in Kaohsiung, the second major city of Taiwan. He has a great passion for the city. People in Taiwan know that stonecarving is famous in Hualien; and woodcarving is famous in Miaoli. As Liu Ting-Tsuan thought, steel can be considered a local symbol of Kaohsiung, so he built up his own slogan “Hualien Stones, Miaoli Woods, Taipei Potters, and Kaohsiung Steels” to indicate steel as a symbol for Kaohsiung. He chose steels to be his material and then combines his creation, and imagination to create lifelike and wonderful steel sculpture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Liu Ting-Tsuan, a steel sculptor with a machinist background who has a great passion for art as well as the city he grew up. By virtue of his love of Kaohsiung City, he uses steels to promote its great vitality. Not only did he use steels to work, he also used motorcycle component to create recycled works with a life like appearance. Wearing a white-shirt, black pants and a glittery leather shoe, Liu Ting-Tsuan is filled with self-confidence, and has an optimistic attitude to stride toward his goals. Not only his amazing works expired us, but also his positive attitude toward life can be the role model of teenagers.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use PC both at school and home for this project. For internet access, we adopt the fiberoptic cable as main structure to connect with the computer center in our school, then connect with TANet (Taiwan Academic Network) through T1 LAN line. At home, we use ADSL to upload data and to look up some information.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In order to completely understand Liu Ting-Tsuan, we started this project on July 2003. While it was summer vacation, we had more time to interview with Mr. Liu. In total we interviewed with him 9 times. In the beginning, we even followed Liu Ting-Tsuan on his whole journey and we spent more than half of a day on every interview. Since we decided to show his steel works in the form of rotating displays, we had many technical problems to overcome with, such as adjust the light of the shooting scenes, making the background simpler so we could fix the photo unique looking from any angle, we also needed to photograph 12 angles of every work and combining these 12 photos for rotating displays was the most difficult part. The students had to conduct the project and deal with schoolwork at the same time. Besides, they also had an important computer exam on February. Some teammates even had to stay for honor guard practice after school. Time management and the teamwork was the best way to overcome this problem, and this will be what we always be proud of our team.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“No pain no gain” is the best word to describe our feelings. At the beginning, we had never thought that we would have so many problems. We spent a long time creating the rotating displays. Each work of the rotating displays has twelve pictures. On the day of shooting, we even had trouble being on exposed to the intense heat of the afternoon sun and the background was blown by strong winds. As a result, we needed more time to edit the pictures. In addition, the background of the three works of 'Take a guess' is so complex so we had to spend more than a half hour on fixing each picture. We all felt exhausted at the end. However, when we uploaded all of those works into our web pages, we were encouraged. Our efforts have a nice expression, even better than what we expected. We felt it was worth spending so much time on this project. Seven months of hard has finally paid off. All the hard work has brought us the best memory and learning experiences.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Learn to understand and appreciate art is the major element for us to achieve. We had done it by holding a steel sculpture exhibition in campus. By completing this website, we also hope that everyone in the world can share the beauty of art which belongs to Kaohsiung Taiwan, the city we are proud of. When we were doing the homepages, we paid lots attention to the article arrangement. In order to express all of Liu Ting-Tsuan's thoughts and ideas, we put lots of the interview pictures with explanations on it. We considered visual effect and convenient operation when designing the web. Although it was difficult and complex to arrange all the articles and pictures, we still overcame all the difficulties with cooperation and trying out the new functions of the software that we used. In a term, our computer tooling using become a lot better by doing this project, which is a learning experience that we were not expecting. Nowadays, young people don’t have much patient for anything they do. The Characteristics of Mr. Liu can be the role model for the youth. His success does not come from nothing. What we learned from him is his observation/creativity/patient/insistency/problem solving toward his work. He also is willing to share his works and experiences with young people, and this is what lots of people should learn from him. From this research, we gained a greater appreciation for and understanding of art. At the same time, we also gained precious insight into our own goals.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used tape recorder and DV to record our talks with Liu Ting-Tsuan during the interview process. We also used Digital camera to photograph the process of interview. Telephone and cellular phone were used to make contact with our teammates. PC and notebook with software, such as Flash5.0, Photo Shop、Photo Impact、Dreamweaver 4.0、Word, was used to organize data, upload and fix photos, as well as to make our web pages. When we had difficulty on the functions on software, we looked up the computer software book and homepage reference for seeking useful information Computer Internet system allowed us to look up the information about Liu Ting-Tsuan on the net, also to check on our web pages on the computer. Floppy disks were to save data and photos. We also had two 128MB flash drive for reorganizing every teammates’work. Printer was used for printing the working schedule and all the documents.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We followed Liu Ting-Tsuan to Pier-2 District of Art and Kio-A-Thau Artist-in-Residence Village while we interviewed him. We met lots of artists in these two art centers. Through the introduction from Mr. Liu, our students had a chance to talk to some artists and knowing what artists are doing, which we would never have chances to learn within school. We also met lots of Kaohsiung citizens who walked by to see Mr. Liu’s work, so we had lots of chances to introduce our project and our school to citizens of Kaohsiung.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

At first, we borrowed 3 of Mr. Liu’s works for the Advertisement Designing Department to hold a sketch contest in the sketch classroom. There were 2 classes participated for this contest, and some of their wonderful sketch works are showed in our website. For advocating the general education on campus in December 2003, we introduced 25 pieces of Liu Ting-Tusan’s work to our school by holding a steel sculpture exhibition in campus. This is a great opportunity for us to share our project with the faculty and the student of our school. To advocate the general education, we also invited Mr. Liu for the opening of the exhibition. While displaying the steel sculpture on campus, Mr. Liu Ting-Tusan held an open touring on explaining his works to the student. After Mr. Liu’s demonstration and experience sharing, our students learned more about the art and the hard work behind every work. We also made a questionnaire aimed at the effects of steel sculpture on the faculty and students in our school. The results revealed that the exhibition of the steel sculpture impressed them deeply. Also, most faculty and students would like to have similar exhibition be held on campus in the future. Consequently, the questionnaire showed that the exhibition got lots of recognition and participation. We knew that our project had an important impact for our school.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We got a lot of help from our community as well we our school to help us. First, we have to thank to Mr. Lin De-Yu, a teacher from Sum-Ming Junior High School, who volunteered to help us to photograph and shooting and editing video film, so that we can reveal the interview scene to the world. Mr. Ke Zhi-Hong, a teacher from the computer center of our school, he helped us on the process of photographing the rotating displays. He helped us overcome the problems that we had for making the rotating display complete. We could never do such a wonderful job without him. Folks and artists of Pier-2 District of Art and Kio-A-Thau artist-in-residence village helped us on introducing their organization to us, so we could see much more artworks and the passion of the artists. The staff of student affairs and business affairs of our school helped us hold the exhibition, so our schoolmates could share Mr. Liu Ting-Tusan's work with us. We also have the greatest thanks to all the staffs and students in SHU-TE High School for the enjoyment of the exhibition and participate in the sketch competition and questionnaire. At last, we have a special thanks to Mrs. Ho Fei-Ching, Mrs. Wu Chia-Ling and Mrs. Kuo Yu-Hsiu for translating our project to English version. Without any of their help, our project would not be able to complete, we would like to show our deepest appreciations to them.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We learned a lot from Liu Ting-Tusan because of his insistence, firmness, and passion for his work. Mr. Liu isn't afraid of difficulties and he always tries hard to overcome the difficulties for pursuing his goals. However, while having problems, young people may just give up and abandon them without any trying. This is what we have learned from Mr. Liu -- “Never give up”. Also, we felt touched by his words 'People who persist until to the end can be successful', and 'Your life can be meaningful if you set a goal and pursue it.' Therefore, from attending this project, we not only learned to appreciate art, but also learned to have positive attitude toward our goals. These experiences will be unforgettable for us.
