Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tamsui Township locates at the northwest of Taipei basin and nearby Formosa strait, and it's just the outward firth of Tamsui River. Overlooking from Kuanyinshan at the opposite side of the river, the charming town and port are panoptic between the mountain, the river, and the sea. At Tamsui Township, remained old castles from 300 years ago, traditional streets and temples, and exotic buildings are all its rich and various sights. In the Ching Dynasty, Tamsui Town became the first and the biggest port in the north Taiwan because of trade and business, and it also became the launch pad of Taiwan when the Western civilization came in. It was once a beautiful place full of exotic buildings; however, it declined because of the stream way silt and the rise of the Keelung Harbor. Nowadays, the MRT system had replaced the traditional North Tamsui railway, and the new town city plan that will provide for 300 thousand people is gradually advancing. Therefore, changing from an old port between river and mountains, Tamsui Township became one of the most popular satellite towns of Taipei City now.

2. Summary of Our Project

In this project “In Search of Roots on Old Streets in Huwei,” we introduce the old streets of Tamsui Township by the guidance of a serial of historical sites; moreover, through the assistance and discussions of the Tamsui Culture Foundation, we gave an intensive, unique tour of culture and history, guided it in order, and practically visited and interviewed the shops and stores on the old streets. Finally, we proceeded to the activity that 'filling the questionnaire and taking brochure and coupons.' The brochures were the refined reports made by ourselves, and the coupons were the enthusiastic patronages from those shops and stores on the old streets. We want to express the traditional aroma of the original Tamsui, let everyone truly know the other face of the Huwei old streets before it completely fade away, and build people’s cultural and historical concern and regard.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

The network of our school mainly depends on the academic network of Taiwan. The loading bandwidth from Taipei County Internet center to our school is 1.5 MB, and the uploading speed is 384KB/sec. We have two computer classrooms in our school at present, and there are about 80 computers totally. We primarily proceeded to the project research after school and at our holidays, though we sometimes had to face the problems of Internet jam, we still tried hard to overcome it.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We are all the students of the 5th grade, and we didn’t have much leisure time matched together, so we always couldn’t get altogether just because 1 or 2 members’ absence. Fortunately, after the final exam we got more time to proceed to the activity, such as interviewing people, visiting the places practically, and discussing our project. Our teachers were so careful that they arranged many activities to do and designed many difficult tasks for us to solve. Although we didn’t have the ability to create web pages, we proceeded to interview people and the stores, design the questionnaire, and photograph and take pictures by ourselves at last; moreover, we even received Jhudong Junior High School of Hsinchu County whom we’d never met before to visit the old streets at Tamsui, we also promoted and introduced the result of our project research to those tourists on the old streets, and donated the guiding brochures and the coupons of those delicious noshes. We cooperated with the teachers altogether, and accomplished this tough project research plan at last smoothly.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After accomplishing the whole research plan, we faced many questions that we’d never thought before, and we also expanded our points of views. We’d learned lot of knowledge that we’d never saw in our textbooks, and were deeply impressed by proceeding in the activity; therefore, we started to know more about our own hometown. Although the Huwei old streets are closed to our school, we still got tired after walking every time; however, we thus knew more about many alleys that hide between the old streets, and we also acquainted with many owners of the stores on the old streets and many legendary stories about Tamsui. Therefore, the gains of joining in the activity were plenteous.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Information and Computer Ability: We introduced our report to the classmates by the software “PowerPoint,” used “Photo impact” to process the images, and used “PrintMagic” to make business cards; moreover, we also used e-mails, message boards, e-cards, and project narratives frequently. The teachers even let us take pictures and photograph by ourselves at last, it’s really cool! Utterance ability: We practiced with each other at first, next we introduced to our classmates, and then we proceeded to research and interview practically. Guiding the old streets for those teachers and students of Jhudong Junior High School of Hsinchu County also helped us work more smoothly than before. Our abilities of adapting to changes and expressing ourselves became much better. Finally, we even went further to design the guiding brochures and the questionnaire, and interview the tourists on the old streets. We succeeded in introducing the research plan we worked on. Cogitation and Questioning Ability: Through interviewing the residents of the old streets, the executor and the guider teachers of the Tamsui Culture Foundation, we kept practicing asking questions and looking for the solutions to solve problems. For example, we acted as the little guiders of the old streets and guided it for the tourists for free, let everyone discover the hive Jhongjheng Rd. where there is another world for visiting, and we also organized the information delicately. In addition, we asked those stores on the old streets for coupons as their boosterism, and we really did it!

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We started contacting the Tamsui Culture Foundation and the Huwei Culture and History Workshop actively at first, and after communicating with each other, everybody was glad to help us, and then they introduced more people to us gradually. Later, the Foundation and the Workshop even took us to visit those stores on the old streets one by one in person, and guided, illustrated the old streets’ historical development for us. After that, the interactions between the community and us began expanding, and those enthusiastic residents who were able to help us also increased, that’s the reason why our activity became so intensive and pompous, and we also gained a lot!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

On the press conference on January 8th of the Cyberfair, our Project Research Plan was noticed and affirmed earnestly by everyone, and some mass media such as GTV, Da-Ai TV, UDN, and Mandarin Daily News all liked to advertise actively for us.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Because we’d contacted with so many people in our community, here we just listed some of them, and on our websites we have more detailed information. The Tamsui Culture Foundation: In addition to guide us, the guiders of the Foundation also provided us much information about the past community activities, and the executor himself even guided us the old streets for many times and took us to visit more people of the community. The Huwei Culture and History Workshop: The workshop was glad that we were so interested in our hometown though we were so young. Mr. Lee therefore provided us much information and also led us to trace the origin of the old streets, and he also told us about the fading stories of Huwei. The residents of the Jhongjheng old street: They welcomed us anytime to interview them and take pictures inside their stores, and the owners of the San Xie Cheng Snack Store and the Deyu Fish Crisps even invited us to taste their foods. Moreover, many people also provided us the photos, documents and information of the past old streets as the references. Our activity became more pompous due to that the San Xie Cheng Snack Store, Syuyi Fish Crisps, Grandma’s Iron Eggs, and Grandma’s Sweet-sour Plum Juice gave us their coupons as the auspice during our activity.

Jioukan Community Development Association: On that day we finished the activity of “filling the questionnaire and taking brochure and coupons,” we met Miss Jheng of the Jioukan Workshop while we were returning to our school and just passed by Chongjian (means rebuild) Street. She led a group of people to thank and congratulate us astonishingly, for many tourists went to visit Chongjian Street after reading our guiding brochures. It showed that our project was promoted successfully.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Finally, we appreciate all those who ever helped us during the activity, thank you very much!
