Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Village of aboriginal Bunu tribe, located at Tao-yuan Tsun in Yen-ping Hsiang, Taitung County, forms a quiet and beautiful valley, with mountains all around, and flowers and thick foliage trees. This village was originally a wild waste land, where parents of Pastor Bai grew vegetables to support their family. Pastor Bai, however, advised his paretns to donate and began to draw it up as a Banu tribe hamlet, in order to provide fellow clansmen some work and thus forming a self-sufficient community. This project, which Pastor Bai called "project with hope", would then improve their daily life, and give an expecting life full of colours in future

2. Summary of Our Project

A full-hearted joined brave, Pastor Bai since his childhood has set up to pursue his dream- object consecrated to Bunu tribe, with his handicapped body and though very limited lifetime. His object is to plan a series of complete "project with hope". On him, we'll find what a brave man with vital energy means.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Most of our research programs are done at (different) school(s), by using computers with local connections, whereas certain part of our study are finished at home, each member just with preassigned work before being uploaded to related schools through Internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The first difficulty comes from mixed-up team members, ranging from students of the 1st grade up to the 3rd in a junior high school. Among them the elder ones (i.e., those who are of the 3rd grade) have further class burden, but at the same time are all obliged to offer much more time doing the research. Unfamiliar with one another on what we'll do at the very beginning, all families involved have now become good friends through continuous touch and mutual concern; and this does happen even in daily routine details now. Our second difficult consists of how to overcome the deadline for website entries as re- quired, deadline conincidating with the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year holidays. Short and limited time left for entries therefore urges all of us to work hard day and night

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

From this exclusive research and its related activities, we understand, through geographic lessons taught at school, Taitung's longitudinal valley palin with its natural beauty and colourful scenes; through history lessons, the struggling history of the aborigines on this land; and through civics, we also understand that only those who keep their love in mind for the land and for the people living there, can accurately display positive sides of human being -a brave new dream with courage.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Oral talks, phone calls: face-to-face or over phonecall talks with Pastor Bai . Internet: collecting all data concerned, including Pastor Bai's autobiography, various pictures and files to be uploaded. Periodicals published by related Fundations : increasing amounts of data already in hand. Recorder and recording pen: copying down contents of each oral interview or talks with Pastor Bai. Digital cameras and digital video handy cameras: photographing the Bunu tribe and Pastor Bai on the spot . Scanner: scanning photos and pictures in question. Cellular Phones: calling, connecting people. Computer softwares: PhotoImpact 5.0、Flash MX、Notepad、UltraEdit、CuteFTP...

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

As Mother of Kevin Huang is Pastor Bai's old friend for many years, via her we touched Pastor Bai and successfully arranged a special visit to his tribe on the 17th January this year. On the same day we talked with him intemately, with necessary help from all his fellow clansmen. Our research work then soon entered into a quite favorable condition, which enabled us to finish this job just in time. And we do hope that through this research, different peoples around the world can further understand what Taiwan is, with its beautiful land and people having unlimited vitality

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

It is a very interesting experience when studying the program on Bunu tribe, as formerly there were only very few local people who would like to visit it, except some foreign visi- tors or journalists perhaps. But now we --some junior high school students here in Taiwan--, come here to take such a difficult challenge! The primary aim of our study is therefore to make people around the world know that aborigines here are priceless treasure in our heart, and understand the deep meanings of the dream and love our beloved Pastor Bai shows.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We were very happy to receive necessary help from all sides when staying at the Bunu tribe, including the whole tribe that provided us with a special car to visit its park alongside a riv- er, also to take a hot-spring bath at Hon-Yeh, and to see a wonderful theater there; then to taste their local food with wild-flavoured meals, plus strong Bunu coffee. Among these, the most impressive thing was to talk intemately with Pastor Bai and many others alike. In fact, the more talks we had with them, the more we could grasp Pastor's heartly dream and love; and above all, we now all realize that such a vitality does exist in eastern Taiwan, and in- credibly existing inside a small tribe! May we heartily say "thank you" to those who all talked with us and revealed their thoughts about Pastor Bai, in such a way that our hard work can be completed just in time.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

All things involved, we should first know how to operate computer, how to interview these people, and mostly find the deep meanings of various talks. At the beginning we thought that such a persona grata like Pastor Bai would have no time to talk intimately with us. But un- expectedly he promised us to do so on the spot. Finally, may we say "thank you" again to all his clansmen who came to help us and made us feel just like at home. Indeed when there is dream and love, there is always courage we can never resist!
