Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

This is a town famous for ceramic industry; therefore it's so called“The Jing-der Town”of Taiwan. Stepping in Yingge from Shu-lin, you can see a natural scenic spot -"The Yingge Rock"- a rock located on the hill. It looks just like a huge bird named Yingge. Coming into Yingge from San-Xia, you can see the gorgeous ceramic museum on your left. This museum unveils the historical page of Taiwan Ceramic Development. What attracts the tourists most is the well-known "Ceramic Old Street". Lots of shops there display all kinds of chinawares, potteries, ceramic paintings, ceramic sculptures...etc. You can also learn throwing in some of the shops. Feeling hungry, you can try the delicious Grandma Sushi, or other specialties. Oh! What a nice place!

2. Summary of Our Project

Hsiao Chu-Chieh grew up in a small town called Yingge. Since Yingge has a lot of pottery he became interested in it at a young age. So he started learning how to be a potter and learned that he had a talent in pottery. Through his talent in pottery he became famous as time went by. He was very creative in his work, and earned a lot of awards for his pottery. He also developed a new way of making pottery. This impressed a lot of people. He taught pottery to others because he wanted to share his talent. He has taught high school and junior high students. He also teaches when invited which once included teaching prisoners.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since we ended up having a late start since we didn’t know who to do our project on. Then we ran into a time problem since we had cram school, family activities, and sickness to work around. So we decided to split up the project between us. Since it was our first time doing interviews with others, we didn’t know what to do. The first time with Hsiao Chu-Chieh was not well done, and ended up with nothing. The second time we were able to get the information needed, because we had an outline to follow. In the end it went very well.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Since we are constantly around pottery, we never paid that much attention to it. This project has helped us understand how cool pottery really is.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our national education policy is reforming, our project matches among them know the local culture. Since Yingge is famous for its pottery, we really learned how important and diverse it is in our community. Also, learning the many different ways pottery can turn out. We not only learned about pottery, but also learned how to use computer programs like: MS word, PhotoImpact 7, Dreamweaver 4, CuteFTP, MS frontpage 2000.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used computers to make the web site, and find information for the project. The telephone was used to set up an interview with Hsiao Chu-Chieh, and to talk to each other. Digital Camera was used to take pictures of the interview, pottery, and us working. A tape recorder was used to record the interview. Notebook was used to write things during the interview. The Yingge pottery museum was used to help use learn about pottery. The Internet was used to gather information about pottery and Hsiao Chu-Chieh. The library was used to find information about pottery. We used computer programs like: MS word, PhotoImpact 7, Dreamweaver 4, CuteFTP, MS frontpage 2000 for out project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

They e-mailed other teams to let them know about our project. They also posted the information on the schools website. They shared information about the project to teachers and students during a school assembly. They also told others like their friends about the project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Hsiao Chu-Chieh’s pottery is so unique that he is more of an artist then a potter. This will help other potters think of new ways of doing pottery, and help them build upon the basics. This will help them try new ways of doing pottery, and change the look of pottery.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we did this project we used the following people: Zhen- Let us use a book about pottery. Computer teacher- taught us how to make a home page. Chinese teacher- corrected our writings to make it sound good. English teacher- helped us know what to write for the registration form. Class mates-encouraged us, gave us support. Librarian-Was very patient with us, and gave us help in finding books about pottery. Our parents- for the money to support our project. Mr. Wang- Helped us find missionaries to translate our Chinese to English. Hsiao Chu-Chieh- for letting us interviewing him, and for the book of his art he gave us. We also would like to thank the organizers of Cyberfair 2003 for this chance to compete.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Discoverires- We learned how pretty pottery could be. We meet a lot of fellow Yingge citizens that love it here. Lessons- Learned how important being on time is. Surprises- We were surprised how hard pottery really is to make, but how much fun it is to do. How nice and knowledgeable our teacher is.
