Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Feng-Nan neighborhood, San-Min District was formed as a village and named San-Kuei-Chu in Chian-Long generatio in Ching Dynasty. It is the very original and humanism place of San-MinDistrict. At that time, the San-Min-First Public Market, the vendors center, and San-Min Night Market consisted of the commercial center of the region. The famous San-Feng-Gong Temple located here in the 1959 Urban Renew Program. After that, the theaters, houses, and shops were built continuously. The population increased gradually and could compare with the Yan-Cheng District then.

There are so many snacks in Kaoshiung. Every area has their own characters. Just like the snacks that we saw only in San-Min St. Because it is near the Kaoshiung Train Station, it could promote the commercial flourishing of this area. It is the reason to attract so many people coming to San-Min St. San-Feng-Zon St. is famous of its year-commodities and has equal name with Dee-Hua Street of Taipei. So, there are stream of people here for shopping year-commodities. It is really a glorious view during the new year period. We would like to introduce and explore the San-Min St., San-Feng-Gong Temple, and San-Feng-Zon St. in the Project Competion of Internet Exposition.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are so many extremely special products and snacks in Kaohsiung, but most of them have not been introduced completely. The main reason we choose the San-Min St., San-Feng-Gong Temple, and San-Feng-Zon St. is that San-Min St. used to be a hubbub of voices market—the First Public Market in one end of the street and the other end is a series Buddha utensil shops closed to San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon St. is next to San-Min St. Because of the First Public Market, San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon St., San-Min St. started to bring up the stream of people and became a cuisine street but not only selling Buddha and clothes.

Our research purpose is to find out the memorial old time flavor of Kaohsiung, so we specialize Three-Threes and focus on the special products and characters of San-Min District, the most population of this city.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Computer and internet have become important things in the high technology development day. Most of our information technology support come form the T1 in school and the ADSL or 56K modem of homes. We did most of our computer jobs in school. We have ever gone to the instructor's home for some works sometimes. The instructor's computer is ADSL also, so it saved much time and promoted efficiency for us. In addition, we re-read the and arranged the collected information. We used the FTP upload software of the internet to make a backup due to the perfect working experience. This is not only to realize our partner's rate of progress but also to provide timely assistance to our partner.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1) Information: Most of us would search the related information about San-Min Street on nets. However, we could find out just a few information in Internet.

Overcome Methods: Collect the material by ourselves. Then think over how to define and how to perform. It will not only be a challenge but also a harvest to us.

(2) Experience: Since we have no experience for interviewing, we got confused and messed almost every time.

Overcome Methods: The leader of the team always typed a interview reference for us that really helped us process the interview.

(3) Shops: Most of the shops we interviewed could provide information to us, but some of them felt troublesome and couldn쳌ft coordinate with us.

Overcome Methods: We march forward to our target with a humble and sincere heart.

(4) Technique: We are afraid that the pages would not be completed because there is only the leader of the team has experience to make pages.

Overcome Methods: The instructors asked four of sophomore to help us. Anyhow, we practice and learn seriously.

(5) Time Period: We could collect information and materials in San-Min Street on every Saturday. Because some the team members should go home on holidays, we have just limited time to gather information.

Overcome Methods: Ask the team members who live in the San-Min Street neighborhood to help.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learned some experience from the activity, for example, cooperation among each member, the interview skills, information arrangement, and processing pages. Even though we worked hard and met some frustration in the process, we had overcome the difficult and still worked harder and harder to finish our final target. We have received some friendly assistance from our teachers and alumni. Some instructors taught and advised us some basic concept and the technique about internet. It really helps to us. Even there were some troubles and episodes during the activity, those will help us grow in the future. We appreciate the teaching and assistance from the teachers.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We realized just a little about San-Min Street, San-Feng-Zon Street, San-Feng-Gong Temple, and Buddha Utensil Street before we started to do the San-Feng Tales research project. However, we brought our ability of information treatment students into full play. We use our document arrangement skill to deal with the collected information after we gathered the materials and information. We learned the typesetting skills by using the MS Word software. A good document should have beautiful and smooth words and paragraphs, so every team member should have the ability to edit moderate words and paragraphs. We combined our usual composition ability that we had learned from the Chinese classes with the Chinese Idiom Dictionary to promote our writing works. We believed that we could get better grade in Chinese classes in the next semester due to our hard working in Chinese writing this time. We faith on the truth that we could be wiser after a thing happened to us. Even though we met many difficult trouble things, we didn쳌ft fear them and appeared the traditional spirit to overcome them.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Scanner: To present our photos by scanner.

Digital Camera: Take pictures of interviews and related informations.

PhotoShop7 & PhotoImpact7: Decoration and produce of the pictures.

Word2000, Dreamwear4, FrontPage2000: Make pages and Information collection.

CuteFTP: Pass our works to nets.

Windows2000 Server: Page server.

TV: Notice whether the TV programs have the information related to our project or not.

Tape recorder: Use tape recorder to record the conversation with important persons.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Of courses, before we interview Mr. Wang, the head of Feng-Nan neighborhood, our team leader searched on the Internet for his telephone number first and then made phone calls to request for interviews. We told him that this interview was for a web page project about San-Min Street, San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon Street. He was so kind to tell us the history and developments about San-Min Street, San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon Street. As for the stall vendors and pedestrians, we would tell them our identifications, the reasons for interview and things to be noticed. Stall vendors would also kindly accept the interview. We thank them from the heart.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During the interviews, many stall vendors were very cordial. They always answered our questions. When hearing we sacrifice our holidays just for the web pages, some of them would encourage us or even treat us with great food. When we put the information about the snack stalls along with its uniqueness, the stall vendors would enjoy free advertisement anyway whether we win or lose. We regarded it as an indirect help for the stall vendors.

There is not much information about San-Min Street in books either on the Internet. TV programs or websites about food doesn't talk much about San-Min Street. Fortunately, much information about San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon Street can be found on the Internet. We hope to gather all the information about them and present them in good organization. We believe that people can learn something new after visiting our website.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The very person that we have the most gratitude for is Mr. Wang Jin-Lu, the head of Feng-Nan neighborhood. We called him to require his willingness about the interview. Without much thinking, he promised to accept the interview. He was such a cordial person to tell us the history, culture and background about San-Min Street, San-Feng-Gong Temple and San-Feng-Zon Street. He also provided us with much information helpful to our understanding.

The pedestrians also enthusiastically helped us to finish the survey. The stall vendors also showed us how they made the snacks so that we could took some pictures as materials for our web pages. Street of Buddha Utensil Stores. Every storekeeper was so friendly to answer our questions and told some common senses about Buddha. They even showed us some books as extra material. We were very gratitude for that. Other classmates outside the team also helped us a lot. For example, Xiu-Mei Chen in our class helped us interview and keep records. Ai-Juan Chen from Ku-Shan high school helped us painting illustrations. Last, we want to thank most our teachers-- Shyh-Iuan Lin, Jien-Yuan Chang and Su-Chian Yeh. They accompanied us all the way and instructed us properly.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

By this project, we found that Kaohsiung, our hometown, is such a wonderful and colorful place. You can find everything here. It could also be regarded as the heaven of gourmet. Although Kaohsiung is the second biggest city in Taiwan, the traditional customs and friendliness are still well preserved here and worthy of a "taste".

While working on the project, we learned many lessons. For instance, we didn't prepare enough in advance so that sometimes we didn't know what to do for the next step. Besides, for lack of experience, we were too shy to ask questions. With the increasing of interview, we were braver and braver. Now we can have conversation easily with the vendors so that things are going more smoothly. We also understand the importance of cooperation. We have more tacit understanding and centripetal force among us. As long as everyone can do well in his/her part, the whole project will go smoothly.

This activity lets us to be aware of the dangers that the traditional streets are facing. We found the change of shopping habits has made people forget the simplest ways of purchase. In addition, most of the families in Taiwan are double-income families. Because of the fast living pace, people usually purchase in the neighborhood. That is the main reason of the downgrade of these traditional streets. People seem not so fond of eating in San-Min Street, shopping in San-Feng-Zon Street or purchasing religious implements in Street of Buddhist Implements. The modern convenience makes these goods can be bought everywhere. However, if people can went to visit the traditional streets and feel the traditional atmosphere there personally, they must have an absolutely different feeling and unexpected gains.
