Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is a precious and fertile island in the southeast of China , to the southwest of Japan and to the north of Philippine . Taiwan has been colonized by many countries since 17ths . It’s location supplies an importan place of economy and military affairs . Taiwan is like a green dazzling jewel lying on the blue ocean and seems like swayed by the tidal water . It is a paradise in the world . As soon as Portuguese saw this land , they praised “Oh!Formosa!” Changhua is an agricultural country in the middle of Taiwan . There are antique town-Lukang , delicious meatballs , and beautiful Ba-Gua Mountain here . The railways of Changhua are the most attention of mountain line railways and sea line railways . Cjanghua also has the railways to transport sugar providing the economic meaning . Comparing with the busy city , Taipei , Changhua is just a simple place . The people here are enthusiastic about giving a hand to each other . Changhua doesn’t have busy towns . But the paddy fields beside the roads , and the smile on the farmers’ faces are just like vivid images to intensity the initial nature and human nature we have here .

2. Summary of Our Project

Railroads play a crucial role in fostering a country, providing the importance and convenience for economics, for politics, for traffic transition...and so on. They are running from place to place like the blood vessels in our body carrying the nutrition to support our lives. That is why the railroads, being o r topic, are our stand point to know our city – Taiwan, Changhua, better first, to intimate our city, to re-construct and to give our city a promising future later. Speaking of the initial construction of Taiwan railroad, it was completed by Japanese rule while Taiwan was fallen to be a colony. The Viceroy Office built the railroad system to be the "engine" of stimulating the development of Taiwan resources for revitalizing the social status. Furthermore, Changhua Train Station and Erh-Shui Stop are the vital points in Taiwan railroad. The Mountain Line and the Sea Line of the Main North-South Railway of Taiwan are converging here in Changhua Train Station. In addition, there is a top secret weapon, CTC, Central-Transit-Controlled System, working in Changhua Train Station. Above all, we may get such a conclusion that Changhua railroads are an artery-like avenue to Taiwan. Not only are Changhua railroads able to serve Taiwan a manufacturing and economic base but Changhua Train Station is an affordable to supply the historic value with a fan-shaped garage, the unique train treasure all over the world. Let us start from this train treasure into our journey of the train.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The first difficulty which had annoyed us a lot was the problem of time coordination among us. Under the pressure of attending entrance examination in Taiwan, almost everyone was busy preparing their examinations so they had to keep studying. Who else had the time left to be concerned with our homeland. Therefore, we had gathered students who were interested in the railways and we had established a club named “Holmes of Formosa” to explore the jewelry of mine of Changhua railways. In order to make the best use of time effectively, we usually stayed in school for a meeting after school every day. Most activities were arranged on Sundays. The members would put into act individually in their other spare time. The next difficulty was what vehicles we would choose. Because we had to interview every railway station including small and large ones in Changhua County. We were divided into two teams to proceed. One team was riding in our staff’s parent’s car. The other took the train to interview one station by one station. This was regarded as the hardest part of our plan. We took the round trip train in Changhua Country for several times from the cross point between mountain line and sea line to the place where every trains gathered. Details of each place were all taken pictures by our digital camera. During the interviewing, sometimes it would annoy us when we did not see the head at the station. Even if the head was at the station, we were a little scared and shy and dared not to talk to them. This was one of our difficulties. Fortunately, we would finally screw up our courage to find the head of the station and had got a lot of useful information we needed. Another important task was the collection and integration of the information. We were very lucky that one of our member whose father was the conductor of a train. With his help, we had got the most precious firsthand information. Meanwhile, we became more and more interested in studying the history of a train.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our report is about :The trainsportationof Changjua and the CTC,Fan-Shaped-Garage......etc,We research all about the railway information of Changhua.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Railway is the mother of economy in Taiwan. So a lot of local stories happened because of the railway. And when we research it, we can understand what the history of Changhua is, that's good for curriculum requirements.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use digital camera to take picture. We use computer to design our website. We use cassette record to record our interview process.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the course of interviewing, contact is a very important task. During the activities, interviewing is regarded as a necessary process. In order to be more efficiency, the chief has divided all the crew into three teams at the beginning: interview team, net team and filing team. Besides, we have also asked the chief’s (Ms. Ju In San) mother to help us contacting by phones. Very soon Mrs. Ju succeeded in contacting the Fan-shaped Garages. But the people from the garages replied that if we needed a narrator, we would have to apply in an official document by the school. As soon as the teacher had known this, he applied and our interviews were then proceeded much successfully. Nevertheless, several of the other interviews were proceeded without notifying them in advance because we were in a rush. For example, we found it did not work contacting by making phone calls to interview each railroad station of Changhua (because there were nobody on duty in some of the stations). So we asked Mr. Yieh Zin Yuan’s father to give us a ride and the help of Mr. Wu I Tin’s father, we went to each station to interview the head of the station. Because we were still students and we did not have enough experiences to deal with when we met some tough problems. But they were soon solved and going very smoothly with the assistant of the parent accompanied with us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope more people can better understand various kinds of resources and the profile of the construction in Changhua by means of website through the internet. With the efforts of our continuous hard work, we have accomplished our goal that the our precious heritage of fan-shaped garages which were supposed to be abandoned were finally reserved because our website has caused the more concerning and attention by charitable people. By reserving this historical heritage, not only we but our next generations can possess the opportunity to learn and understand the beauty and wisdom created by our predecessors. We sincerely hope in the future other historical heritages can be properly reserved and maintained besides the fan-shaped garages. In additions, after more and more people in Taiwan have browsed our website which has beautifully described the features of Changhua, they are all eager to pay their visit to Changhua and taste its famous and delicious food, which have made the tourists much satisfied. Thus, we can proudly state: “Out website has not only create a total fresh image for Changhua, but also well introduced such a wonderful sightseeing spot as Changhua for the tourists.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1. Associate Chief of Fan-shaped Garages: is the narrator when we visited the fan-shaped garage He is a man of much experiences and rich knowledge about railways. He not only described to us in details but also showed us very precious information for our best reference. His advices have supported and helped us a great deal to the followed interview later. He is regarded as one of the most graceful person we would like to thank for. 2. Mr. Lin, Chief of Changhua Control Room: introduced all the necessary information of Changhua control room including a number of lights and numbers on the wall. He made us aware of all the matters about control room such as the control process, different functions of every signs, various kinds of trains relative to numbers. 3. Each Head of the railway station in Changhua: starting from Changhua station, when we arrived each station, everyone of us got off the train and tried our best to collect every information we needed. Each head of the railway station did great help to provide us necessary information. (Head of Changhua Railway Station) We did not come across head of Huatan Station; Yuanlin Station is a big station and the head has worked quite a long time in his career. He told us almost everything about the general situation of Taiwan railway (including Pingsi spur, Jiji spur and Taipei Control Room, etc.) and also told us many things about trains. Yongjing Station has nobody on duty. Head of Sheou Station provided us the most complete information. For the first visit we did not come across head of Tianjhong Station but he provided us many information when we paid him the second visit. Head of Urshuei Station is so enthusiastic that he had discussed with us for more than 10 minutes although he was very busy then. 4. The interpreter who translated for us: There is quite a number of information and he helped us by translating from Chinese into English word by word.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

While we are doing our research, besides we are quite amazed to have used the equipments in every respects in a more advanced skills, we also have learned the proper politeness and manners we should act while facing the interviews. Another important results are to know better about the railways. Although many people has experiences of taking a train, only a few people know much about the real knowledge of the railways, which is so broad and profound. We not only visited the historical railway heritage of fan-shaping, but also saw several ancient locomotives with our own eyes, which has reminded us how many people were taking them years ago when they were young to many trips, so fast and convenient. We surely pay our high respect to them. Nevertheless, thought they are now very old, they are still standing over there in the garage. Unfortunately, when we have come to think that there were many people thought tearing apart will be their destiny of the fan-shaped garages, it really made us very disappointed. Therefore, we sincerely hope that by making the website we have designed, it will really recall people’s loving and passion of ancient heritage as well as enable more people to better understand this garages and also reserve and maintain the garages They are not merely a heritage, but also represent the results of both hardship and perspiration of our ancestors…
