Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Shuilian locates at the East Coast, sitting at the eastern hillside of the Coast Range and surrounded by three mountains.{Shuilian)(Mizhan) and Fanshuliau. It looks like a small basin, and the village is built on the left bank of the concourse of the north river and the south one. It belongs to Shoufeng, with Yumei Village and Yanliau Village at its north and Mizhan at its west, adjoining Fenglin and Fengbin at south and the Pacific Ocean at east. Its area is around 47.03732 square kilometers. In the Shuilian Basin, the indigenous people and the Han people live together, producing a unique and diverse Shuilian culture. Shuilian is a bright pearl along the East Coast. And Niushan, a nearby hill with amazing scenery and abundant nature resources, is a secrete garden of the Hualien citizens. This area is an important place in the East Coast National Scenic Area. Besides its nature ecology, the local customs, human culture and the history are important, too. The Amis tribe here was once one of the four big tribes, and it was ranked the third one. Moreover, some historic sites of the Neolithic Era have been found here. All of these are proofs which demonstrate that Shuilian is not as poor as one might think. In fact, its plentiful and diverse facets make Shuilian a fascinating village. And that's why we are attracted by it.

2. Summary of Our Project

The name {Shuilian} came from the Amis language {Ciwidian}, meaning lots of leeches here. According to the research, people of Jingpu were the ancestors of Amis. The huge rock in the Amis legend is still standing in the center of Shuelien Basin, a powerful proof of the prehistoric relics. Besides the Amis culture, this beautiful village has other varied charms, such as its rich nature resources, human culture, historic relics and amazing scenery. However, the journey for Shuilian hasn't always been smooth. It experienced some crucial events such as building the Niushan Thermal Power Plant and the road-widening construction of Highway 11. We really hope that, by reading our project, people can understand its culture and the impacts it's facing now. We have two reasons tocall it the Blue Tribe. One is that Shuilian locates at the East Coast, which would make people think of blue easily. The other one is that Shuilian is facing many impacts in several ways, and the blue color just means a deep blue(sadness).

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

To create a special web page , most of our member complete their work at home, some of them use 56k internet speed which is slow for creating web pages making it stressful, some members use high internet speed ADSL, so they are responsible for the major parts of creating a web page. In the final stage we use school computer rooms as a tool to integrate our working environment.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1.The biggest problem we met was how to find time to discuss the project out of school hours.

(2. In web design, it difficult to integrate everyone's opinion because every member has ifferent skills and level in the web design software area.

(3. For most of our members, it was the first time to join this kind of activity, we all felt very excited and interested. Thus we didn't have experience to handle and manage the problems we met. But in this activity, we distributed work to every member in advance, therefore we can think about what we wanted. This gave time to prepare and think about the information needed. After this project, we learnt how to make our thought to become more methodical, reasonable and logical.

After some prepartion, we would have a meeting to discuss and understant every member's problem and status ; hence we learnt meeting skills such as how to make speech more orderly and coordinated.

Especially, the most challenging part in our research was the outside interviews,it made us learn and obtain more. Before the interview, we had to learn how to express our objectives and make an apointment ( time and place) to interviewee, furthermore, we needed to have good prepartion in advance. During the interview, we learnt how to ask valuable and worthful questions. we also had serious meetings to discuss how to have good tone, manner and words of speaking when asking questions.(if you don't believe, please see the serious look in the picture which is attached in the passage)

We strated the doing webside after gathering all the information, we started thinking about how to transmit plentiful information to others through our webside. Our members were expected to use webside skills to express Shuilian , this beatiful village.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This subject research is a very precious experience to us, we learnt to solve and manage the problems we met. Through the interviews, we saw many things indepth; for example we saw a old wise resident Mr. Lee who keeps his enthusiasm to the Amis culture. The administrative chief and representative of villagers are sincere and honest people, they have special emotions to Shuilian. Their face always show happiness when they are talking about Shuilian. The resident of Shuilian lives in massif, so the address is difficult to find, therefore, Village master drew a special hand map to find the address, and we are all dissolved by his behavior.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We knew about the CyberFair through our school, and then we invited some schoolmates to become a team. Besides undertaking every research in our free time, we also asked the teachers about the technical skills in school. So, we learn a lot not only about the actual operations on varied software, but also the right attitudes and the art of conversation and communication. Moreover, we realize the true meaning of teamwork. The most precious is that we achieve a mutual agreement: no matter how difficult things seem to be, we all have to keep on them and never give up. We are proud of being the students of Hualien High School. Outside, our school is our name and our harbor, and we have to step into Taiwan or even the world via the help of our school. For us, school is our home, and schoolmates are our family. We all have to be proud of it.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computer CD burner Scanner Printer Digital camera Digital video camera Recording pen Telephone Dreamweaver MX Firework MX PhotoImpact 6 Notebook

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The reason for our choosing this topic is that we want to share the beauty of Shuilian with everybody. Before we started the project, we all realized that our members held different opinions and feelings on this place, and so did those interviewees. So, we had to decide the directions of our project, and before interviewing the villagers or the scholars, we also had to explain the reason and the purpose for undertaking this research. Luckily, all the interviewees were willing to convey their thoughts on this place and share their experiences with us. We also asked them to say something on the internet. We are just like the reporters, spreading the impact and the beauty of Shuilian Village over the world and let everybody know it.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

When we started to visit the village, the Community Building was being undertaken at that time, providing a good opportunity for us to introduce Shuilian more. Besides, our project enables the villages to understand their own living environment more. We believe this would, more or less, affect the local development in many ways. At school, only few people knew what we were doing. Our studies maintained the same level and didn’t get worse due to this activity. We interviewed the owner of the only family-run inn here and got to know that he had unique ideas for developing his business. Those interviewees always support us behind. They even treated us every time we visited them. We are really grateful for their kindness.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1. Our teachers supported us in several ways. They provided not only their personal instruments for us to do the job but also the professional suggestions for our reference. 2. The leader and the representatives of Shuilian Village accepted our interviewing and even took us to Niushan to take a look at the location where the Thermal Power Plant was supposed to established. 3. The principal, who is called the Father of Amis, of Shuilian Elementary School told us the detailed history of the indigenous people in Shuilian. 4. Doctor Yao, our leader’s father, helped us a lot. He not only gave us some ideas for interviewing, but also drove us to everywhere. Maybe we can call him “the father of our project.”
