Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The place that we considered to be our local community is a place named Taichung. It is the city that we lives and is located in the central part of Taiwan. Taichung has very nice weather and is known as the “cultural city” of Taiwan. Famous sightseeing spots such as National Science Museum, National Art Museum, National Taichung Library, Civic Cultural Center, Chung-Shan Park, Sculpture Park, and Folks Park are all situated in Taichung. Large department stores including Shin-Kong Mitsukoshi, Chung-Yo , and Sogo make shopping very convenient for local people. In order to make Taichung a more classic, humanistic, and technological living place, Taichung city government has dedicated tremendous effort into developing its local characteristics.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main purpose of our CyberFair project is to introduce General Sun Li-Jen’s legacies to the public. General Sun was one of the greatest generals in Chinese history. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute of U.S.A. in 1927 and was then joined the Chinese army. He fought and won several crucial battles against Japan during World War II. However, due to several of his subordinates were involved in some spying scandals, General Sun was placed under arrest and imprisoned in Taichung for nearly 33 years. In order to honor General Sun, the Taichung city government intended to build a memorial hall right at the place where he was imprisoned . As to us, we collect creditable resources from books, newspaper, films, and we even visited the place where he was imprisoned. By using these materials that we gathered, we intend to construct a web-site to introduce the glorious past and the legacies of General Sun to the general public and memorize the hero that has long been forgotten by most Taiwanese.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

For accomplishing the school project, we mostly utilize computer equipments and internet network in the school. The school computer network is connected to the Taiwan Academic Network centered in Chung-Shin University, which make it easier to guarantee us fast access and most updated academic information in designing the web-site. Some of our project members also use personal computers at home to help them finish the project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The most difficult part of this project was to visit General Sun’s Memorial Hall. Because it’s still in planning stage, it was not open to the general public. The teacher spent great deal of time to ask the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau to contact General Sun’s family. With the permission of General Sun’s family, we can finally visit the Memorial Hall. In addition, due to General Sun’s document was long been regarded as classified information, which made it more difficult for us to gather data. However, we overcame these barriers by gathering information from web-sites and books alike. The use of digital data bank has help us found many long lost and valuable information regarding General Sun. Moreover, the fair distribution of work to every team members also encountered some problems. It was, however, overcome by our will to participate and determination to finish the work as well.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

To the project team, we learned a great deal of knowledge concerning how to gather data, analyze information, conduct field study, and most importantly, share and coordinate team work. The complete dedication to work on the smallest details has made the seemingly unattainable work possible.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Within our curriculum textbook, the knowledge regarding the life of General Sun’s life was not only fractional but also badly insufficient. Nonetheless, with the field study and the information we gathered from creditable resources, it completely reveled the unknown past of General Sun to us. In addition, during our research, we realized that only team work complete a project. This is a valuable experience to the coursework and curriculum that we must encounter in the future. Activities such as the International School CyberFair should be held more often by educational authority and schools in Taiwan. Throughout this web-designing competition, we also learned how to gather information from the web. We firmly believe that distance learning is going to be the tendency of the future. By applying distance learning to the curriculum, it would certainly to be one of the most efficient ways to gain knowledge in this technological age.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

There are various hardware and software that help us complete this project. They are listed in the following list: Hardware: computers, Internet, Digital Camera, telephone, and cellure phone. Software: Digital data bank, VCD featured General Sun's life, Microsoft Frontpage, Macromedia Flash, and Ulead PhotoImpcat for designing web pages.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

From the perspective of an ambassador on-line, the students believe they have done a great job in revealing the true stories of General Sun’s life to the world. He was mistakenly been regarded as a criminal in Chinese history and was then proved innocent . World Wide Web is a very powerful media and very influential “ambassador”. By taking advantage of it, the students firmly believe that the legacies of General Sun would be proliferated very quickly throughout the world. As to the spokesman in person, the student shows real determination in disclosing the wrongfully accused history by contacting local authorities and by visiting the Memorial Hall that is still in the making.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By doing this project, it increases the public understanding of a heroic figure that has long been forgotten. It also enhances the relationships between schools and local authorities. For example, the attempt to reach Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the contacting of General Sun’s family, and the visiting of the incomplete Memorial Hall have certainly directed the attention of the authority to take General Sun’s issue seriously and the fact that the Memorial Hall has yet to be completed.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

There were many helpers and volunteers in this project. For instances, the assistance offered by the parents of every team member. They help us contact key persons such us General Sun’s family and Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau. Besides, most of us did not have cars, which made it very inconvenient for us to conduct field study. It was also the parents who used their car and get us where we wanted to be. Some other people such as Mr. Lo Kuang-Yen ( son of Lo Chao-Chun) were kind enough to share us precious historical pictures that they kept for years. Most of these helpers or volunteers were either touched by our devotion or motivated by the same passion that we shared. We would like to express our profound appreciation to all helpers and volunteers that had involved in this project. Without you, this project would not have finished.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This CyberFair project means a lot to all of us. By doing this project, we learned how General Sun deals with his life in prison, how sophisticated he treated his subordinates, ands how serious he takes on every little thing. He is a forever hero and a legend to us. We have a lot of respect for him. In addition, doing this project also makes us realize that only true coordination between team members accomplished a mission. We are proud of what we have achieved in this project and we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our teachers, parents, General Sun’s family and many other supportive individuals for giving us this chance to finish this task.
