Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Beidou Riverside Park which was the previous ferry pier in Ching Dynasty is now located on earlier river course of Choshui River nearby Wan Lai Elementary School . Numerous business men traded here at that time . It's in the center of the four following towns - Beidou Town , Shijou Township , Beitou Township , and Tianwei Township .

Beidou Town which was called Beidou Street in Ching Dynasty has been being the center of politics , cultures , and life style for a long time . Nowadays , people come here at their leisure . However , the prosperity was faded away by the floods and the sediment of the earlier Choshui River .

2. Summary of Our Project

Beidou Riverside Park located in the south of Beidou Town happens to be the center of four towns and townships . It has become the most important place for leisure time around the area since it was established . It was built from the right bank by the earlier river course . There are amusement grounds by the river , a bike ridge lane , grass , a garden and so on in the park . We are going to research the history of the establishment of Beidou Riverside Park , investigate the function of living in the future . And , hopefully , the public can understand the past , the present and the future of Beidou Riverside Park better through this project .

In the campus Internet Access : We have a computer classroom , two ADSLs:TANET (384K for uplink and 1.5M for download) , HINET (384K for uplink and 1.5M for download) . At home Internet Access : We have ADSL (56K for uplink , 512K for download ) and Modem (56K) .Basically,our Internet condition is not very good;therefore,we hope it will be imporved after this activitity.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Actually, We met a lot of difficulty when we were doing this job .

(1)How to express when we were discussing with our partners ?

(2)We tended to say something wrong because of being nervous when we were visiting some one .

(3)We felt sad when we waiting for people answering the questions in the form .

Why ? Because , they would like to say that they couldn't do it or be absent-minded .

However , we learned a lot from this activity .

(1)We learned to share our thought with each other and respect others' opinion .

(2)We are not anxious anymore .

(3)Our teachers told us that we could read the questions loudly for the aged and the illiterate people .

It's an unforgetable experience though it's a tough job .

It was a little bit hard to collect information of Beidou Park at the beginning . We did not know how to start . Our teachers gave us some suggestion later on . Do you wanna know ? Let me tell you ! Our teachers told us to look for the information from books , newspapers , Internet , the details we got from our visiting , investigation , and our observation . But , we couldn't find it out because of lacking for Beidou Riverside Park in the beginning . finally , we found Beidou Town Chronicle , Beidou Annually , Brilliant Changhua Magazine and some old newspapers for reference . They helped a lot . We know better about history of Beidou Riverside Park .

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We can understand past , the present , and the future of Beidou from Beidou Riverside Park which is located on the previous ferry pier of Choshui River .

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In order to correspond with the policy of the Ministry of Education In Taiwan-Nine-year Joint Curricular Plan for Elementary and Junior High Schools , we do our best in major subject areas .

the following seven :

1. Language learning area :

(1) We know better about the art of speaking through the dialogues in visiting progress .

(2) We improve the ability of organizing Chinese by arranging our information .

2. Mathematics learning area :

(1)We understand how to figure basic average out by rearranging and calculating the result of our investigation form .

3. Social Science learning area :

(1) We know a lot about Beidou Riverside Park in our hometown by participating in this activity .

(2) We are more familiar with the design in Beidou Riverside Park by examining the terrain .

4. Health and Physical Education learning area :

(1) We exercise a lot by visiting the sidewalk , the bike riding lane and the skating-rink .

(2) We understand the a good leisure environment can develop our body and mind in a proper way .

5. Art and Human learning area :

(1) We understand the arrangement and beauty of the design of Beidou Riverside Park by photographing by ourselves .

(2) We understand that a beautiful room can improve our living quality by visiting there .

6. Natural Science and Living Science and Technology learning area :

(1) We understand the change and the process of reconstruction of the river by this activity .

(2) We know better about the species of the trees planted in the park by observing .

7. Activities Combination learning area :

(1) We understand how the different races come here to make use of Beidou Riverside Park by observing .

(2) We understand the advantage and disadvantage of the development of Local Attractions by this activity .

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1 . Telephones -- It's the most convenient stuff to communicate with each other .

2 .Recorders , TVs , and VCDS -- At the first time , we recorder by a recorder when we visited the former leader of the town . Unfortunatly , it took time to rewind the right place to write everything down . So , we watches TV and VCD later on . That made things better . Anyway , if it's possible using a video camera is better .

3 .Video cameras -- Beidou Elementary School helped us a lot . They photographed for us by a video camera when we were visiting the leader of the town , James . We greatly appreciate that .

4 . Digital cameras -- We have 3 digital cameras in our team . One camera even can rephoto the pictures in a book . It's more useful than a scanner .

5 . Computer softwares -- We use the computer in the computer classroom .We edit our web site by Microsoft FrontPage , rearrange our photos by PhotoImpact , calculate the data of our investigation by Microsoft Excel , and finish our introduction of this project by Microsoft Word .

6 . Books , newspapers , magazines , libraries -- We get information about Beidou Riverside Park from books , newspapers , and magazines in the library of Beidou Culture Center . By the way , James , the leader of the town gave us a book "Beidou History " which records lots of information about the past of Beidou . That would be helpful .

7 . Interviews and Investigation -- We visits Hong , the former leader who planed to build Riverside Park and James , the leader ? Also , we got the viewpoints and expectation to the park of the public .

8 .E-mails and Internet -- We keep in touch and share experience with each other by sending e-mails . And , it's an easy way to search information on the Internet .

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We make an introduction form of our project for the public or the visitors . People can understand our purpose easily . We don't need to waste time in describing everything .

4.Investigation - This groups is in charge of investigation the public in Beidou Riverside Park and array the original data .

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

At the beginning , we were a little bit regreted to participate in this activity . Because there were lots of things to do and we were kind of lazy . But , we got advantages from this activity . We learn to get along well with each other , cooperate , be mannered when we are visited others , and make our web site . When we visited the former leader , Houng , and the present leader , James , they listened to us and answered to our questions patiently . Houng took us to research in Beidou Riverside Park , Rotary Park , Near water Park .

He told us that the concept of designing Beidou Riverside Park is about the Big Dipper and the Eight Diagrams (Book of Changes in Chinese mythology ) . There's a design of the Eight Diagrams on Celestial-balance Bridge . Also , there's a design of the Big Dipper in Rotary Park . Therefore , we realize that the history and culture of Beidou Town affects the civilization a lot .

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We appreciate the former leader for being visited . He told us the motivation of constructing the park and the difficulty had during the process . He also took us to visit the park by himself and explain everything for us in the park . We are so glad to share such a good place with you . We thank for the help of the present leader , James . He also refered to the expectation of developing sight seeing in the future . He was so kind to send us a book "Beidou History " . We thank Beidou Town House for offering the details about the funds of building Beidou Riverside Park . We thank for the help of the secretary in Beidou Town House , Wenpang Hsieh . We appreciate the help of Theme Teaching Research Team of Beidou Elementary School . Teacher Liching Lin leads the team to offer equipments , VCDS and participate in our interviews . Most important of all , with the valuable material and suggestion from the public and the sightseers , we can finish our project completly . Thanks a lot .

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

So far , it's just a place for leisure . If we want to make it a national sight , we have to do the following things . Try to combine the history , culture , folklore , art , and specialties in our developing plan of Beidou . Than , Beidou Riverside Park would become a theme park , not only for leisure , and for education . What we can do in the future :

1.To erect statues for the VIPs who contributed himself to Beidou ,or examples , Tsochou Chen, Poting Lin...and so on . 2.To build the models of the earlier architecture street house , for examples , Gungchian Street , Yuansh Street , Douyuan Road….and so on . 3.Collect the poems and articles composed by the local sholars and poets in Ching Dynasty , in the colony time , and after recovery of Taiwan .

4.To introduce the process of making the local specialties , for examples , dumpling , roast pork , bean thread , peanut candy…. And so on .
