Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

"Shihu" is one town of Changhua County.Changhua is located in the center of western part of Taiwan.Changhua lies to the south of Taichung, west of Nantou, and north of Yunlin by Choshui River. Shihu is the central part of Changhua, bordering on Pushing,Yungching, Tien in the east, adjoining Puyen in the north, lying next to Erlin in the west, and next to Pitou in the south. The traffic is very convenient for Shihu.Chungshan freeway passes through the east of it. The interchange is only three kilometers distant from the center of town.It just takes half an hour from Shihu to everywhere of Changhua county. And we can drive northward to Miaoli or southward to Chiayi in one hour.Shihu is 5.28 kilometers wide, 5.12 kilometers long, and the total area is 32.0592 square kilometers. It is divided into 25 administrative districts called "Li".The soil of Shihu is rich and level; its climate is good. The irrigation is also convenient and has little natural disaster. So the farm produce is abundant and becomes a special area for agriculture. Moreover, Shihu is famous for its lamb hot pots, grapes and leeks.

2. Summary of Our Project

Several students who collect information and visit the old in order to make the history of Shihu clearly finish this report. And that will let the history of Shihu be what it really is.We also make a web page for localism teaching of junior high schools and primary schools Shihu and even for the whole nation to know Shihu more.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In the process of making web pages, we met a lot of difficulties, especially searching for the venerable elders who are almost Taiwanese, but as our capability of speaking and understanding Taiwanese is not good enough, we can't communicate clearly. Fortunately, our teachers help us with the job and then we can complete those interviews. Moreover, in the past people didn't know the importance of history so that the truth of history disappeared. What we can do is to collect sources from consulting historical books and interviewing the old. Fortunately, we received lots of references from some benevolent persons and that let our report more reliable.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Collecting and investigating information is a good way to understand the culture and history of our community clearly. It also gives us an opportunity to learn how to solve problems and how to cooperate with others.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

For these years, the Taiwanism sense has emerged because of political transfer, and teaching about hometown becomes the most important subject. To know the history, culture of your own community is a necessary ability . So, each town begins to edit the textbook of local history and geography. But the contents are still scanty, so we decide to enrich the local community textbook by students to participate in the searching of information and visit the aged to clarify the history of Shihu ; then we make a web-page of teaching to connect with our school's first web-page to offer references for junior high schools and primary schools of Shihu . We hope we can play a good medium to introduce Shihu to all the people of Taiwan and the world.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

【The adoption of technique】【The adopted technique】 The oral visit:To visit the-aged of our country personally to know more about Shihiu. The Cyber-internet:To search relative web-page on web-net and gather information. Books and magazines:Looking for relative editions and transfer them to a computer sound-file. The digital camera:To take the picture of the aged's looking when they were visited and transfer to files of image and moving picture. Scaners and printers:To deal with the image by using scanners and copy the information by using printers. Telephones and Fax-machines:To communicate with the visited. The computer software:Photoshop6.0 Flash6.0 Ulead VideoStudio6 StreamAuthor ftp... Remarks:The most equipments above were offered by our school. Thanks for Yang Show-Chun offering the digital camera and Min-Jing offering the record-stick.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

These students who participate in the competition are 6th grade in primary school. These students played the roles of ambassadors and made the appointments to meet by telephone. We requested their parents who were free to pick up students to the aged's house to make the visits. When we were on visit, the parents and teachers would be translators because the visited person spoke mostly in Taiwanese which the students are poor in. The record-pen was the needed tool on the visit. When they went home, they transfered the oral speaking to relatives, then discussed those with teachers face to face and transmited the draft by E-mail to be revised by them.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We hope that it will let more people to know about Shihu and the history by the power of Cyber-internet to push people to love and cherish the present Shihu. More than that, let students know that the easy life is not gained easily, we must cherish what we have now.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

As soon as we had deceided our topic than we committed the Dean Chen Shou-long to look for the aged who were willing to be visited. The chief of Shihu Cultural and Educational workshop, Yang Chi Shin, is also of great help to us to contact with those elders and let the interviews go smoothly. This time we had the promise of the aged by means of the Dean Chen's asking. Our school student's father Mr. Shin Jung-mao offered old pictures which he collected hard to enrich after he was aware of the research. The town-chief Yang Tzung-che accepted our visit on him in his busy time when he was aware of the purpose of the study. Many teachers of our school instructed students passionally, too. We here thank the seniors a lot for their instruction and assistance. In the research, we learned more about our country except the using of computer technique and skill of visit.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the bygone years, people had no conception of preservation of history and relics, so many old buildings, relics of Shihu were damaged. For these recent years, the conception of preserving the relics to leave evidence has emerged. Some people begin to search for old things and photos to reserve history of Shihu. In our interviews, we listened to the aged to talk about the old time, and that let us know about the tough life of the earlier Taiwan, when it was compared to our present life, how luck we are to live in the paradise, and we should be satisfied and cherish all of these and study harder. We also heard from some aged men about the harsh teaching ways of the Japanese teachers during the time of Japanese rule. These aged men said "The more teachers love you, the more they scourge you", so they appreciated their teachers all the time. Besides, they think the society-chaos of the present is due to the education is too relaxed for students, and teachers should be more harsh and emphasize on conduct-education to mold excellent students.
