Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

  Taiwan Kaohsiung, the land we were grown, an important region that the puppet shadow show was developed. The early development of the puppet shadow show were mainly located at Ping-Tung and Kaohsiung, and highly concentrated there. In now days, Kaohsiung Country becomes as the origin and the center for research and development of puppet shadow show. The puppet shadow show was one of an ancient and traditional skills, A delicated and well fabricated leather puppet accompany with the shadow of light often caught the harmony and stirred the imagination of audience. In the past days, we have experience of attending the festival of local temple, A group of people usually gathered and watched the show “Monkey King- Sun Wu kong with big magical power”. However, it get less chance now! Let's return the old Kaohsiung and share the puppet shadow show.

2. Summary of Our Project

  Puppet shadow show, or called “the monkey show of the skin and drama of the skin”, is a traditional skill of the ancient China, streamed to Taiwan from Guangdong two hundred years ago. It was one of a favorite show at southern Taiwan, while it gets fade now. Seeing Puppet shadow show for old generation is as well as young people seeing a movie. “Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater” have been as a important role in the development of the puppet shadow show at Kaohsiung, The initiator Chang Te-cheng of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater, who created the golden stage of Taiwan, in this way we could learn the change of different era both in political and social of Taiwan though the time period and the content of the show. The puppet shadow show use the reflection of the light and present it at the screen, mix with the change in action and color, and use the clever hands, make the pulpit as lifelike. It is really a magic. And always stir the inner of audience with applause, Let us share its wonder now!

  Our campus network links to Internet, via the system belonging to Jung-hua communication Corp., through ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) and has nearly two hundred computers connected points inside school. No matter where the information is send, inside or outside the school, the quality is rather high, so it provides teachers and student a great place to teach, study and research.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

  We really fell among some vexation in producing. We have some trouble to be conquered,such as the availability of time, member of different crew, school course to be finished. It is real not easy to find time available for both us in research and study. As we can have only little time in the rest time of morning and afternoon for discussing by scheduled plan, so the progress goes slowly. Besides, we also have problem for the arrangement of right time for visiting the selected people and desired topic.   By the way,It is also a lousy matter for video recording too. In the beginning, we used digital video camera prepared by our school for recording with an impractical way. It needs a lot of time for adjusting the movement of lens, so many jumped films happened and need time to be fixed. Eventually, it is so lucky we could operate the video machine smoothly and made the progress under control.   For the modern society, it is not easy for seeing the show of leather pulpit any more, moreover, due to the decay of the old artist and the change in environment cause the difficulties for collecting the related message from them. For most of the player are not rely on the show, they have to earn their living through many ways, and it increase the difficult of the visiting. Chang Fu-kuo and Chang Yih-kuo of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater made the most help for us and promote our opportunity in recognizing the magic of Puppet Shadow show.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

  Anyway , busy is busy, however, from the specific research we could got great impression in the developed of the artistic of hometown, and got coincide of teaching in artistic teaching.   Busy is a common word for this crew, while we enjoy it. No matter what the result of the contest of the shadow play, we really hope the shadow play will have the same status as before, and let the old generation recall the old time. Even more, we also hope many people have chance to understand the beauty of this traditional show.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

  In addition to common learning, our school also expands the hometown teaching continuously. We hope the students’learning is not only to follow the footstep the world change, but also to know this native environment more and what happened before.   Since the beginning of the year 1994, our school establishes the student association of the puppet shadow show. Students have excellent performance because of the leading teacher Chang Yih-kuo, a member of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater. In addition to many times winning the prize, they also usually perform in some schools important activities. So, all the students in school have chance to contact with this special and traditional technical skill of Taiwan. It is a pity that people only appreciate it, but they usually lack of the opportunity to know the puppet shadow show further. This time the special subject studies of the puppet shadow show can match with the increment of everybody’s cognition of the puppet shadow show and the agrestic beautiful art! From this special subject studies and the result of the web page manufacture,we expect to make students appreciate the puppet shadow show performance. We also hope to deliver the characteristic by the information of the internet and can investigate special world of the puppet shadow show more and thoroughly. In fact, the research of "puppet shadow show" connects with the school curriculum like language, art, and society etc. Form the dialogue and phrase in the puppet shadow and the text of the manuscript, all of these can let everybody appreciate the charm of Taiwan hometown language. And through its development, everybody can understand the change of Taiwanese social history and living environment. In addition, the manufacture of a skin puppet can let everybody have chance to learn how a beautiful work is created and can enrich the self-restraint and appreciation in the humanities art.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

  When tidying up the data or doing the web page at home, everybody usually makes use of instant pager of the telephone and network to understand the degree of others’ progress, and sometimes delivers the data each other with the E- mail.   When we go out to gather news and collect data, we take some photographs and sometimes need to record image to present the data integrity. Our school provided a digital video recorder to take photo or record image. We use it to take some actual condition of performance process or drama regiment at the right moment. Besides for matching with different need at the same time, we still have two personal digital cameras provided by members of the team.   In the data of the collection, some pictures provided by Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater must use the scanner.   Because of the short time, we usually have to exert our ability of the shorthand during the interview. But the shorthand is difficult and may leave out some interview details. So, we use the recorder to record the interview content first and check with the shorthand content again after coming back. In addition, we sometimes make use of the tape recorder to record some part of the musical performance.   The software of the computer that we use include: Manufacture the web page with Microsoft FrontPage 2000, processing the picture with Ulead PhotoImpact 8.0, manufacture the animation with Flash MX, ascend the spread data with CuteFTP, and convert files for the audio and video with Ulead VideoStudio 6.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

  We directly contact with the school’s teacher Chen Hong-fu. Teacher Chen helps us very much both the conceive outline and push of the whole special subject plan. Teacher Chen has ever served as the dean of students and pushed the puppet shadow show association activity of the school, so he and Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater's Chang Yih-kuo (the leading teacher of our school puppet shadow show association) are very familiar. And teacher Chen also has much interest in the puppet shadow show, he attended the skin carved of the whole country the teacher last year and won the unusual honor in the third place accidentally!   Teacher Chen uses telephones or contact directly, constantly stays in touch with Chang Yih-kuo Sir, arranges our visit items of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater, and helps to guide our record the actual condition of the drama performance. These really help us a lot, and let us province a lot of power at the visit process. And through visit and the route of travel, we even go deep in understanding the act of the puppet shadow show ex- backstage, past and now, deeply feel the beauty of the puppet shadow show, this old traditional art.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

  The development of Taiwanese puppet shadow show once leads a years of gold. But afterwards because television etc. is technological rising, the environment of the big times changes and makes regiment of the drama atrophied to run off gradually, only leaving a handful of regiments of the puppet shadow show up to now, which still continue the tradition silently. The glory of the puppet shadow show is gone, today many people no longer have chance to contact with this traditional technical skill, even forget it gradually. The children in habit of the modern high technology sound and light, even think this kind of hometown art, the puppet shadow show, already becomes outdated! But through this special subject research, it changed some people’s many viewpoints of the puppet shadow show. We think it is simple about the set of the drama perform, in fact, it needs many strenuous efforts.   From carving the skin puppet to the performance of the operation, all these are seemingly easy, but actually difficult. Through actual contact, let us not only have the chance to understand the development and change of the puppet shadow show, but also let us experience personally the magic of this traditional art. We gave low regards of the puppet shadow show before but now turn to deeply respect and admire. Although the times change, the elegance of the puppet shadow show is no longer, its worth in art and influence in traditional living are remembered forever.   Through this project of the activity and display of the web page, we let old generation revive an old dream, arouse the joy to see a play that year. We even let new generation have the chance to contact and experience the charm of the puppet shadow show and feel the combination between "light" and "shadow".

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

  Our best assistant should be Chang Yih-kuo, the leading teacher of the puppet shadow show club!   Teacher Chang is the member of the sixth on behalf of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater. He’s become familiar with this art since he was very young. So, he has his own great capability that consummate performance technique of the puppet shadow show and skin manufacture, and is very familiar with everything of the puppet shadow show. He serves as the leading teacher of the association of the puppet shadow show in our school. He lets the whole school's teachers and students have chance to come in contact with this traditional art. In this activity of the research, he not only does duty for our detailed dictate the development of the puppet shadow show and the skin manufacture in Taiwan, but also lets us visit its taking the set and the process in performance.   Certainly, the chief Chang Fu-kuo Sir and all members of Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater have much contribution. Although the chief Chang is very busy, he can’t interview us with long time. He still asks his older brother, teacher Chang Yih-kuo to take us visiting many old and elegant skin puppet and some related data. In addition, the old man, Chang Chiang Sir, also makes us touched extremely. He has ever an expert to accompany with Tung-Hua Shadow Puppet Theater. He’s now 83 years old and also withdraws the drama performance. But in our interview he works hard to give us musical performance a melody of "Hsiang-liu-niang". All of these let us see an old man’s "persistence" and "persist" for ideal!   In this process of the manufacture, there is an unit helping us too much, that is the museum of shadow puppet of Kaohsiung County Culture Center. With their approval, we copy some photographs from the data in their puppet shadow show and put them in our web page. They also presented some books of the puppet shadow show for our reference.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

  Form this special subject studies, all of us learn many things. We not only have more understanding about the puppet shadow show but also learn about “to our own persistence”!
