4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Since we decided to participate on the online display, we adopted a more relax yet careful attitude. On the technology front, we have the experience and knowledge needed for the task (The team leader received 5 Microsoft MOUS licenses). On the experience and teamwork front, we have members who participated in the competition in the past two years. The challenge is time management. 80% of the members are top tier student in the school so their school work load is relatively heavy. Thus, we requested our member to log online at least once a week, besides the assigned work and progress report. In addition, on every Wednesday and Friday's lunch break, there will be routine meetings. The biggest challenge is on the multimedia front. We have the equipment but not enough broadband.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Because we confirm teacher Lee Hsiao-Ming as the research subject so we are looking forward to the lantern learning camp, which the principal is currently planning. If only we continue to cultivate and do our best, we will success someday. By Huang Yen-Hao

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Participating in this event, the topic is lantern; fortunately, the school is hosting the lantern learning conference that let us use the opportunity to interview with the masters. In junior high school's art classes, we have a session about lanterns. By participating in the competition provides a review and also increase our understanding of festive lanterns, and this will cultivate our talents. Festive lantern is one of Chinese traditional art and with combination with junior high classes; it assisted students to further understand lanterns. Hosting the lantern competition, let those who are interested in the subject compete and interact with each other, and thus, improving one's own skills. I believe that this tradition will pass on. Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

For this competition, we certainly use telephone as our main sources of communication. After all, e-mail is still not instant. During the interviews of teachers, if just use pen and paper to take notes, we ought to lose some details. So we also used audio recorders. The most important is wired computers and this allows members to receive the information I sent out. On my part, I also used digital camera and digital video camera. However, I find digital camera to be of more practical use than recorder in our case. I am also responsible for collecting and making up the web-page, so my computer equipment must have sufficient capability to perform the task. Thus, besides a Pentium III 866MHz (512RAM) computer, I also upgraded the old Celeron 400MHz (128RAM) to Athlon 900MHz (512RAM) and created a local access network. By Huang Yen-Hao

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

This is our first time interviewing those well known lantern masters and it is because of the lantern learning conference that gave us the opportunity to do so without too much difficulties. On our second interview with the principal, we started the interview after everything was arranged so the principal gave us a lot of encouragement. The last interview was to visit our art teacher Hsu Yu-Shia, who did not provide any opinion to our event but was cooperative with the interview. We really appreciate they. By Kang Hsuan-Kai My first interview is to interview the teachers who participate the lantern conference on the activity center. And they provided us with a lot of useful information. We also interviewed schoolmates using surveys and asked their view of the teachers. I think this job is meaningful for us. By Chen Yi-Hsiu

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Indeed, festive lantern is not a popular activity, but from our study, we can let more people to understand festive lanterns. I think it is very useful to help to festive lanterns development in the future. With several weeks work, the cooperation with each other improved the teamwork and friendship of us. The interaction between parents and children did not only advance, but the attitude of our way of getting along with people is getting mature by days. This research report did not just bring us knowledge and memories but improve our behavior to life. On the contribution to school, we glorify the school's characteristics. Not to ourselves only, but to other people outside the school, we understand Ming-Sheng Junior High School much better, and also we pay more attentions for some things seems to be ordinary surrounding our life. Although Ming-Sheng is just a small school, from this event, this gave us the opportunity to attract other people's attention about us. By Kang Hsuan-Wei

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In our community, everyone was very supportive and friendly, especially those teachers at Ming-Sheng Junior High School, they provided the most assistance and guidance. Whether teachers or classmates, all provided the maximum assistance when we needed it. In preparing for our research report, we practically mobilized everyone in the school. We want to say Thanks to those who assisted us. By Chiu Li-Ting

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the cooperation in the past few months, of course we encountered many obstacles, like time conflicts, group communication and computer skills etc. We tried to conduct interviews during weekends, but it is difficult since some people have tutor, some have homework, report or other personal issues. But to finish the report, everyone sacrificed his own time to finish the work. Also, during the process, there are some conceptual issues and every member has his own view. So there were a lot of conflicting opinions and some members where unpleasant with their workloads. Therefore, we negotiated and made necessary adjustment so that everyone can work happily together. By Liu Kuan-Yun On computer technology, I particularly requested that everyone submitted their draft in the text format, not Microsoft words. Not that I do not trust Microsoft, but in words, everyone used slightly different formats, such as different fonts, spacing, colors etc. Also, I have not made any web pages for almost a year, so my skill would not be as good as it used to be. But spending one day looking back at the old web pages that I made, I feel confident again. By Huang Yen-Hao Although we see festive lanterns every year, we still do not have a lot of understanding about it and we have absolutely no knowledge of how to make it. After we made the research report web-page, not only we better understand teacher Lee Hsiao-Ming, but also got to know many masters and learned to appreciate festive lanterns. The biggest surprise is the understanding of Teacher Lee. Although he appeared to be very serious in lectures, we find him to be very passionate in person. Since we have massive amount of information to type, we really improved our key-in skill. By Ko Wei-Yu
