Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hsinchu, formally called "Chu-Chier", was built 171 years ago. It is a windy town, full of history and historical sites. Long before its establishment, Kin-San-Mian was still occupied by the Taokas, an aboriginal tribe. There are many legends about this area. All these heritages and stories have arose the love and attention of people for the origins of their home town. Kin-San-Mian is also a place where the National Science Based Industrial Park, the first high-tech industrial park in Taiwan, is located. In the past twenty yeras this Silicon Valley of Taiwan has created an economic miracle. It has also brought about many problems and conflicts of culture, environment, humanity and technology in Hsinchu.

2. Summary of Our Project

Kin-San-Mian, the orchid of the valley in Hsinchu, where preserves so many historical sites and rich culture, is a place of memory and history for the past two hundred years in Taiwan. Moreover, when the goverment established the National Science Based Industrial Park in this area twenty years ago, it has not only created abundant economic growth to the neighborhood, but has also caused many confrontains between the development of technology and humanities. With this understanding, this research aims to arose the love of the home country and to eatablish the mutual respects between humanities and technology. We hope that the image of the high-tech industrial park and the beauty of the historical town could match perfectly and to share the hornor and glory of its prosperity together.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

This is the first project for student to build the web-site which is published to the public. All the students who participate this project are very exciting about this.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The greatest problem we encountered is time, since we did not learn of the competition until mid-November. Therefore, we had only one month to work on this project. Besides, as we went further in our investigation, we found there was so much to be included. A series of tours and interviews had to be arranged within a very short period of time. At last, however, with team efforts, the project was finished just in time. Another problem is our computer skills. For example, we were not familiar with image processing, art design, and file transmission. Only two of us had acquired some skills to deal with these issues. As a result, we had to seek help from time to time.A third problem is the insufficient number of computers. As the class of the gifted (that is, a class of gifted students) was at that time also preparing for a science project competition, every student wanted to use a computer whenever possible. Consequently, we had to take work home and stay up late. We really hoped that there had been a number of notebook computers available to us whenever we needed to use them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

A reflection from doing the project is: to listen, to observe, and to get involved actively is the beginning of love; to work hard towards the goal shall finally bring the sweet fruit of love. Ying-You Ho (Team Leader): I think when constructing a website, team work is very important. Like in interviewing, typing, art designing, image modifying, website managing...every one of these subjects has somebody responsible for it, so that the website could be complete and meaningful. Wen.Lee: After finishing this case study, I learn that it is important to hear the voice from everyone of each party. Every little opinion could make great help to this land and make our home town even better!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Since the shocking earthquake on September 21 last year, we have deeply felt that we need to walk out of the classroom to care more about our homeland. This project is our first step towards this goal. Kin-San-Mian is the community where our school campus is located. It is the place we have been so close to every day yet so unfamiliar with until we started this project. We didn¡¦t know that the small shrine just beside the school ¡V the Kin-San-Mian is the real host of this land. As more and more historical stories were revealed, we were moved and we began to feel so close to the trees, the flowers, everything on this land. Not only do we emotionally attached to this land but we also feel responsible to it. We now learn how the residents of this community had worked hard shoulder to shoulder to protect their homeland. We now realize that a country should carefully protect her cultural heritage as well as natural resources so that she will not become a rootless orchid. Opposition and prejudice hinder progress. We, therefore, hope that this web site, which is easily accessible to the public through internet, can bridge the gap between the Science-Based Industrial Park and the Kin-San-Mian community, establishing communication, facilitating understanding, and promoting cooperation between the two parties. We have seen so many people working towards this goal, and we believe that our homeland and our country can become better tomorrow.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware:Telephone , computer x 5, cassette recorder, digital camera, scanner, fax machine, library, books, and newspapers. Software:Microsoft FrontPage 2000, Microsoft Word 2000, Outlook Express 5.0, Netscape 4.5, IE 5.0¡@ Photo Impact 5.0, Cute FTP 2.6, Windows98 Others:Face-to-face interviews, lectures, telephone interviews, seminars, tours, field trips

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To do this project, we visited Mr. Wu Ching-chieh, who is responsible for the Studio of Kin-San-Mian Cultural and Historical Study. He helped us collect many stories about this community. As our student reporter interviewed by phone Professor Lu Chung-chin to learn of the Lake Ko-tzu Event, he was so nervous that his face turned pale. The most exciting was that we were able to invite Professor Lee Ding-tsan of the Institute of Social Studies at Tsing Hua University to give us a series of lively lectures on the history and culture of Kin-San-Mian. He advised us that we try to join the study of history and culture with contemporary life rather than fall into merely yearning for the old.We were also fortunate that Dr. Huang Wen-hsiung, the Director of the Science-Based Industrial Park gave an interview to us. After the interview, our reporters said that they had originally had some negative view of the Park; however, they now realized that they should make judgment on a controversy only after they had listened to both sides. This is one of the valuable gains from doing the project. In addition, we visited , Ms. Tuan Hsiao-fang, the head of the Chinshanmien Community Development Association, and Tseng Hsin-nan, the head of the Chinshan Li, who told us their views on community development. With the help of Ms. Lee Chia-chen, who works at the Park, we made a tour to Han-Ming Technology, Co. in the Park. We were greatly impressed by the high-standard environmental protection policy maintained by the company.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In the progression of our study on Kin-San-Mian, we deeply felt the importance of preserving history in real life. After we have explored the painful events in the changes of Kin-San-Mian, we decided to make the effort to do something more positive. We first made ¡§A Pledge to Construct the New Kin-San-Mian,¡¨ proposing four projects to the Park. Director Huang of the Park thought highly of our proposal and promised to evaluate the feasibility of the projects. We were greatly moved by Director Huang¡¦s enthusiasm for cultural construction. It seemed Kin-San-Mian now could see a light at dawn.As we found that there had been not only opposition and confrontation but also great damage to natural and historical resources during the construction of the Science-Based Industrial Park, we felt great sorrow for this land. Which should be attached more importance to, culture or economic development? We were glad that Director Huang told us that he valued culture and history. There should be more officers in the government who are as forward-looking as Dr. Huang.During the investigation, we made in-depth exploration into many practical issues involved and we contacted many people with different views. It is significant that we learned the essence of democracy: listening to different opinions in order to form an adequate judgment. We hope that this web project can play the role of facilitating communication between the Science-Based Industrial Park and the Kin-San-Mian community and bring new life to harmony.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Many people not only gave us a hand in this study but also became our good friends. Professor Lee Ding-tsan at Tsing Hua University, Li-wen¡¦s father, gave us a lecture on history and culture every week after his first call in which he encouraged us to join the competition. He was the best adviser for our investigation. Thanks are due to the former head of Chinshan Li, Wu Ching-Kin-San-Mian and who provided us with valuable historical materials. We also want to thank Director Huang of the Science-Based Industrial Park, who accepted our interview and gave us warm encouragement. In addition, Chief Wu Chun-fu at the Park and many parents, such as Ms. Hsia Mu-mei and Mr. Wei Chih-fu, gave us much information about the Park; Ms. Lee Chia-chen arranged a tour to the companies in the Park; Ms. Hsu Ya-lin helped arrange the interview with Director Huang; Mr. Tseng Hsin-nan (the head of the Li), Mr. Tuan Hsiao-fang (board chairman), and Professor Lu Chung-chin kindly gave us interviews. Of course, we should thank our parents who accompanied and encouraged us with delicious food and milk tea during the hard time. All these will become our everlasting sweet memories.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The society and the happenings in the adult world appear so complicated to us! With respect to a singular matter, different people have diverse opinions and points of view. It needs great wisdom to make decisions and judgments. As teenagers, we learn this as part of social education. On the other hand, we realize that we should care more about our surroundings. We hope to become real Kin-San-Mian people, rather than travelers with short-sighted goals. We would be responsible for this land. Then, we understand that we need morality and courage to fight against violations of public welfare and damages to the environment. We want to become a brave protector of integrity standing up and giving our words! The most exciting and surprising moment during the study is when we discovered the secret of the Cool Water Pit Stream. The Divine Spring as recorded in the historical documents still existed! At that moment, it seemed that we had found a precious treasure. Director Huang later expressed his interest to re-excavate the spring as long as the spring exists. It is really great that the Divine Spring can come to life in the near future. The important things we learn from the study are: cooperation, responsibility, perseverance, exploration, and care about other people. All in all, we have learned so much from this study, and we are glad that we have the opportunity to join the competition.
