Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

¡§Xiang-shen¡¨¡]The traditional comic dialogue in Chinese theater¡^ is a special ¡§speaking & singing art¡¨ in Chinese society. This traditional skill was almost gone, but it comes back in the modern Taiwan again. The reason that it can be valued is because of its humorous dialogue. We live near the Culture Center in Kaohsiung, which the performances take place almost every night, so we have more chances to go to all of those performances. We hope that we can interview the Chinese traditional arts to all of you guys. Also hope that xiang-shen can be passed on to the world.

2. Summary of Our Project

We are talking about "Xiang-shen" in our webpages. "Xiang-shen" is a kind of traditional comic dialogue in Chinese theater.

First, we planed to go to some renowned xiang-shen performances. We try to realize xiang-shen¡¦s essence. Then, we read some books about xiang-shen to know xiang-shen¡¦s history and develop profoundly.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Meanwhile, the school takes advantages of T1 broadband of Chungshan University to access the Internet and transmit information rapidly.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the time we made our web pages, we need to solve the problem about the free time we have.

After making the web pages, all of us learn more about some software. We sure learn a lot. In addition, finding books about xiang-shen are a really tough work because we only have a little books about xiang-shan here in Taiwan.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It let us know more about our own traditional arts. We also learned to ues some software which we've never used it before.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We¡¦ve spent both a lot of time and efforts during the process of making this web ¡V fall asleep in front of computer and face the dilemma of website competition and school exams.

However, we burst into laughter because it is the time that this website is gonna complete. *^_^* As we think back, it was such a wonderful memory that all of us sat in a circle and discussed together.

Perhaps some people might think that we, as the students in famous senior high, should fully concentrate on studies rather than participate in the website-making competition. Let me tell you the truth that I do learn a lot due to my participation of this activity. Have you learned how to behave properly and manage affairs from textbooks? Do you know how to get the information you want in the limited time? Have you ever done the information arrangement? And how to build a site? I suppose not all of you know all of these methods, right? We know all these stuff and can make use of them to our studies in school. All the hard work we¡¦ve been through will give us a big hand in the future.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The period of gathering information from various sources: We¡¦ve been using the library of the Kaohsiung Culture Center and the BBS searching system of the Kaohsiung Library. Besides, school computers, laser and bubble jet printers, World Wide Web, E-mail (communicating with people in xiang-shen association, etc.), various websites about xiang-shen, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), scanners and digital cameras, all these did us a favor.

The period of arranging the information we¡¦ve got: Softwares: Microsoft word 2000 and 97 (for handling scripts), FrontPage 2000 (for saving the information), PhotoImpact 4.0 and Little Painter (for arranging pictures), etc. We contact each other by e-mails. (Outlook Express)

The period of making the website: School computers, notebooks, Cute FTP, ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line), World Wide Web and various kinds of computer softwares.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Owing to the difficulty of gathering the information, we contacted xiang-shen association by e-mail. Among the research project participants, a student¡¦s mother contacted the units associated with speaking-and-singing art. Because of that, we were able to get the info systematically.

At the mean time, we also bought some xiang-shen albums. We got closer and closer to this field through listening and appreciating these records.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In our school, people can always find some enthusiastic Chinese teachers who help train students of speaking-and-singing art. Thus, xiang-shen is quite fashionable in the campus. Yet, most of the times, students just listen and don¡¦t understand its history background. Hopefully this website can let more and more students not only ¡§appreciate¡¨ xiang-shen but also ¡§know¡¨ something about it.

We, members of this research project group, are happy for that we can broaden our knowledge a lot from outside textbooks.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Many thanks to the following people: English teachers who check our English writing, and Chinese teachers who take charge of training the students, crews in the xiang-shen association and so on. Because of you, we could solve every problem we¡¦ve encountered. Special thanks to people who contributes so much to xiang-shen on the Internet. Without you, we really don¡¦t know where to start building the site!

Again, thank you all so much for all you have done for us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This is our first time making such a big, big ¡§English¡¨ web page. We never knew that we can translate this much Chinese into English in such a short time. We often thought that we didn¡¦t speak or write English well. Due to the English education starts in 7th. Grade in Taiwan, most of us feel afraid of speaking and writing in English. During the time we made our Cyberfair Website, we finally solve the problem we had before. Also we learned more about how to make a website. Besides, we know more about our own traditional arts, Xiang-shen¡¨,. Anyway, thanks again to those who helped us.
