Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan, my dear country, my sweet homeland. It¡¦s a gorgeous place with wonderful people, a prosperous economy, and high-end technology. What¡¦s more, the variety of our rich culture provides interesting festivals, solemn ceremonies and foster unique traditions. The never ending fun and spectacular sites promise Taiwan to be an irresistible experience. Besides being a big attraction, Taiwan is also the cradle of miracles. Enchanting wonders glow withen it¡¦s plain appearance and deep potentiality shine softly through it¡¦s simpilicity. Thanks to the tender, soothing care and love of our land, we lived comfortably in a rich enviroment, enjoying the one-of-a-kind cultures and beauties of Taiwan. Taiwan is truly the foundtain of our happiness. Let us, sons and daughters of Formosa, put our soul and heart into our work, and together, strine for the glory of our island! Taiwan, my dear country, my sweet homeland.

2. Summary of Our Project

Taiwan is a small island, but it inherits a huge history. Chinese New Year, Tomb Sweeping Festivals, Mid Autumn Festivals and much more add tons of fun and flavor into the lives of Taiwanese people. Whenever a temple holds a ceremony, Taiwan Operas dance and sing on the stage while peddlers weave grasshoppers out of grass and Chinese knots. Taiwan has such a wonderful and exciting environment that we are able to start off rich in the new era, but now we're also in danger of losing the traditions we once had! That's why we're here. Let's strive to find back the Taiwan we once had!

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

When we first decided to participate in this project, everyone was excited with the idea and we just couldn't wait for it to start. But before we knew it, school activities and major tests started to eat through our time. We couldn't even get together because some of us have other web page designing contests to attend! So our rate of progress slowed down and it was hard to catch up with the time afterwards. Besides timing, the art designing was also a pain in the neck, it tooled some brainstorming until we met to every member's agreements. Anyway, we only have one thought on our minds as we worked through the difficult parts one by one, that is-

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Come on in, and get a touch of the Chinese folk at performances! It¡¦s fun! It¡¦s cheerful! It gives us vitality in our every-day-life! As time floats by, more and more activities are created, and new knowledge are passed on. From the unbelievable creativities of our ancesters, we now have these dazzling folk art performances! Fascinated by all these, we would like to step further inside, and try to understand more about them folk art. In this process of studying and introducing, we wish to enhant and glory this meaningful treasure given to us. Come on in, and get a touch of the Chinese folk at performances!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The education environment in Taiwan has changed a lot in the past few years. And the biggest one of all was the attention toward our land. It's great to learn about our culture in textbooks, but somehow, it's just not enough. From this project, we found that the beginning of true learning is learning initiatively, and what we learned was far more than what we expected! We have all our appreciations toward our P.E teacher- Mr. Chen. He introduced us to the fun-filled world of traditional folk arts and showed us his passion and love toward them. He gave us the wonderland we've always been seeking for. Thanks to him, we now embrace the soothing, warm soil of our country, and understood where we shall stand in the ever-changing world.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

There are many people on this team, so everyone¡¦s computer is different. Mostly we use computers in the computer classroom at school. We use FrontPage and Dream weaver to make our pages, and draw pictures by Photoshop and Photo Impact. And we interview some people with radios and cameras. Some of our teammates have scanners and digital cameras at their home. Our computer teacher, Ms. Liu also rends her digital camera to us. That would be convenient to get photos into computers. We keep contact with each other by Internet and telephones. During the time, we find the most helpful tool is Internet. Because all our teammates can use Internet at home, it would be faster to change our ideas. For example, we meet at BBS to discuss our web site. So we use Internet most and find it is very important in the future.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our art teacher -Miss Jiung described the traditional folk arts to us in detail, and this opened a window for us into a whole new world. Traditional folk arts are not only things that help us remember the good old days of Taiwan, but also represents the creativity and cleverness of the people in the early age of Taiwan¡¦s history. Our P. E. teacher ¡V Mr. Cheng guided us by giving us some information about what we were working on. His wonderful teaching added wonders into the boring textbooks. Thanks to him, we now realize the true meanings which were hidden in folk arts.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

It is sad to say that most of the people in Taiwan do not identify Taiwan as much as they do to other countries. And this is the main reason why we wanted to make this web page- to introduce our unique culture. Meanwhile we intend to attend the monthly community meeting to share the knowledge we learned. We believe that by sharing it with others, our culture can shine through the hearts of our people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First of all, we want to thank our art teacher¡XMs. Jiung, she pointed out a direction for us to follow, the techniques and inspirations for making our web page. Next, teacher Liou gave us a lot of precious ideas and teacher Ling who always gives us a hand just in time. Last, but not the least, our P. E. teacher and the members of our traditional folk art team, their suggestions meant a lot to us. Anyway, we want to thank all the people who helped us in making this project.
