Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan used to be ruled by Europeans. It is a pity to say that dancing of local style wasn¡¦t rooted in this land. There is no so-called professionalism about dancing. The situation didn¡¦t change until Japan took over Taiwan from the Ching dynasty to 1945. More and more students learned western abut dancing abroad and brought the new skills back to Taiwan. Among them is Tsai-O Lee. She has devoted all her life in promoting education of dancing since she came back from Japan .

2. Summary of Our Project

Why do we form this project ? First, she was the first one who went to Japan to learn about dancing. Second, she brought back the western dancing skills. Third, she gave the women in Taiwan who were under very conservative circumstances a brand new way of thinking and provide them an outlet to develop themselves. Tsai-O Lee is a landmark in the dancing history of Taiwan. We believe that this project is of great significance to our society community.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

1) At home: 1. Acer Aspire Pentium MMX-133 (made in 1997) 56K modem system 2. Microsoft windows98 Chinese version.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The most serious problem we had to overcome was the loss of the dancing history in Taiwan. The information about Tsai-O Lee was hardly found even in Kaohsiung Municipal Library. So we took what we need in our interview and also added a lot of latest information in our procject.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The woman persisting is the most beautiful.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through this project, we find that learning via the Internet is more efficient than traditional learning. On the net the information is easily shared , which enables many people to read the materials asynchronously. We don't have to send papers, which is time-saving. n addition, we learn the prerequisite of learning through telecommunication. Now we construct our own knowledge and take great responsibility of improving ourselves. That is, in order to get the informationwe want in a limited time, we need to be active in learning. Secondly, we discover the weakness in the exam-oriented educational system here in Taiwan--the ignorance of humanities, We students living in South Taiwan are lacking in cultural resources in particular. For example, we searched all over the libraries and the net for the history of history of dancing education in Taiwan, only to find very little information. Most on-line information features the development in the northern part of Taiwan. We hope to be a practioner and pioneer for the dancing education in Southern Taiwan and discover and explain the unknown history to the world.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We found lots of reading materials about dancing from Kaohsiung Municipal Library and National Sun Yat-Sen University Library. Besides, we contacted Ms. Lee on the phone and had an interview with her, right at her place. In that way we got more pictures, video tapes and also recorded the interview. To construct our website and complete our project, we used software such as Outlook Express to send e-mails, so that we could keep track on the work. Other software like Photo Impact 5.0 is used for drawing pictures and decorating other parts of the pages. Front Page is used for creating all the pages.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We used the telephone to connect with Lee and made an appointment on December thirty. But in the afternoon of December twenty-fourth, we got a phone call from Lee. She told us that we have to change the date into December twenty-fifth. In the interview, we also told her every details of this project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Actually the purpose of this project is to introduce Lee, who dedicated herself to dancing education in Taiwan silently. She devoted her life to showing hope to Taiwan, expressing in the form of dancing. So we have to pass on the spirit that she persists in doing dancing to every area. To let more people know more about her effort and learn to respect the hard work of such a pioneer as Ms. Lee.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We gave our greatest appreciation to --- Miss Jennifer Chang. With her kindly help, we got in touch with Tsai-O Lee. Miss: even she is always in while fully engaged, she still found time to talk to us and offer Tsai-O Lee video tapes and photos for the study proceeded smooth.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We will never forget the day Dec. 25th,when we interviewed Mrs. Li at her lovely place. She is so friendly and willing to answer all of our questions. In her interview, it was her persistence in the pursuit of beauty that moved us deeply. To give each of us her signature, she signed on the scene. However, she made a mistake. No matter how we tried to convince her, she insisted that the wrong one can't be given. She is a perfectionist. This taught me a lot. We hope that we can persist in doing what we hope for and achieve perfection. At last, we want to express our hearty and earnest thanks to Mrs. Li again.
