Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In 1921, Taiwan Culture Association (TCA) was founded in Taipei. Within a few years, it initiated the trend of the cultural movements in Taiwan. Owing to these initiatives, Taichung gained the title of ¡§Cultural Center City¡¨, for most of the participants were from Taichung and they frequently hosted these cultural activities in this area. At that time, Taichung City was the capital of Taichung State, including Taichung City, Taichung County, Changhua County and Nanto County. One of TCA¡¦s main objectives was to promote and publicize Taiwan local culture. , TCA organized branches in various places in order to awaken Taiwan people¡¦s consciousness and to enlighten their ways of thinking. They also started newspaper-reading clubs, organized the youth clubs, women¡¦s groups and farmers¡¦ groups. In addition, they issued TCA¡¦s journal, offered to set up summer schools, the Culture Bookstore, the Central Bookstore and Tatung Trust Corporation. They also advocated New Literature, reformed the Taiwanese dramas, and frequently hosted ¡§cultural lecture series¡¨ in rural communities with a view to constructing Taiwan original local culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

On October 17, 1921, initiated by Mr. Chiang Wei Shui, TCA was established in Taipei. Under the leadership of Mr. Lin Shian Tang, the intellectuals devoted themselves to upgrading Taiwan culture. They started awakening Taiwan people¡¦s consciousness to fight against Japanese policy ¡§Colonization and Assimilation by the Japanese¡¨ and pushed the enlightening movements forward to construct Taiwan local culture. They issued their own publications ¡§Taiwan People¡¦s News¡¨, and set up newspaper-reading clubs, bookstores and summer schools. They also advocated the movements to the youth, women, farmers, labors, the financial world and the parliament. They became pioneers in reforming local literature, dramas and films as well. The members in TCA hosted a series of lectures on culture and initiated the island-wide trend of the cultural movements. People associated ¡§cultural¡¨ as a common sign to the ones who were ¡§progressive¡¨, ¡§reformative¡¨, and ¡§Taiwan-awareness.¡¨ Because there were more participants and branches in Taichung City, it was natural to call the city the ¡§Cultural Center City.¡¨ In 1932, TCA was dismissed because of Japanese suppression and inner discrepancy. Nonetheless, they actually seeded the New Taiwan Culture and had an impact on the following-up Taiwan history. Nowadays, the Internet has become increasingly popular, without any limits and ends. We can be a window on the world. First, we have to set up the framework of our local culture again to reconstruct our history. Tracing back to the times of TCA, we familiarize our land and our people as well as the contributions to the land by our ancestors and pioneers. Looking forward to the future, we call to recollection of our present culture construction in Taiwan and join hands to map out how to construct new Taiwan culture. We highly expect that Taichung City can arouse another trend for ¡§New Culture Movements¡¨ in the following century.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Because Taiwan schools CyberFair has not announced the result, we cannot register our school. Therefore our registration has delay and has not enough working days to finish our project. But we overcome any troubles to finish the project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have three points of our feeling about doing the project. First, it was very tired to do this project. But finally we have finished it. We seat on the chairs of school's network center together now. Nobody would like to say anything except tired. Second, we must thank for our instructors and some people concerned with this project. If we have not your support, we cannot finish this project. Third, thank for everyone once again, best wishes for you. We also wish Taiwan Formosa beautiful forever.¡@ Coming from every place around our school, Coming from the different heroes around our school, They are acquainted with each other in the twenty-one century via Internet.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Before this research, we just know a little about Taiwan's history from the textbook's chapter about Taiwan Culture Association. After the research, we have known more heroes' stories about Taiwan's history and wholly know these heroes' contribution for Taiwan's history. We have learned how to search and to arrange information. It is very helpful for us to do something in the further. We have learned how to help our members each other via this project. We have learned democracy from the discussion of our meeting. For Taiwan's education, student can only learn knowledge from textbook or teacher. Taiwan's students are just to remember fixed knowledge; they have lack of individual thinking. Therefore we have researched our school's history and the spirit of Taiwan soul via this competition. We really research into that history, then we acquire the precious knowledge that is not known from textbook.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We use schools' Internet network , E-Mail and FTP service to communicate with our instructors or our members. Our instructors also teach us to visit some organizations and search external information via internet service.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This project extends our school's history. Being a member of TCFSH (Tai-chung first senior high school), you should know TCFSH's history, is the principle of our research for this project. After this project research we know our school's history. We know that previous generations devoted themselves to build our school under Japanese imperialism's stress. We know that it was very difficult to manage a school on that time. From this viewpoint, we know that their spirit is called Taiwan's soul. In order to enhance this spirit, our website is concerned with the evolution of Taiwan's democracy. Because our students or other peoples can know our school's history or the source of Taiwan's soul from our website.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we went to Ming-tai school and Taichung Culture limitation, and interviewed the presents. And we decided that one classmate asked questions and the other classmates record the process and join discussing. During the process, we felt relaxed. Because he is very friendly. He was glad that he could answer us the related question. Our record was brief, but important. We talked deeply about topic and enjoy it.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the past we just knew knowledge or information via textbook. But now we can show our history on the internet due to technical development. We know that the major peoples are too busy to read information in this industrial society. Therefore we arrange this information about our school's history and Taiwan spirit in order to let more peoples known. Also, we have learned to cherish our school, reserve our excellent tradition and to enhance and glorify. We will do ours' best to keep these assets forever.
