Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

¡@¡@Kaohsiung,located in the south of Taiwan, is full of subtropical tint in its weather. It is warm all the year round. In the suburb, you can see the boundless field in the far place as you enjoy the beautiful red flowers and the green shrubs which slip away from you. The gulf and coral coasts also radiate its unusual beauty.

¡@¡@Kaohsiung is a second large cosmopolis in Taiwan. It is famous for the harbor and the heavy industry. The processing export zones, petroleum chemistry, mechanical industry and ship-building industry play an important part in the making of economic miracle of Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

¡@¡@Kaohsiung has been being the important city of industry for a long time in Taiwan. When people found the Kao-Ping River is not clean, the mountain is not verdant and the air is not fresh any more, we finally realized that our industrialized city not only brought the modern and convenience but also the pollution in our life. In the manufacturing country, which is famous in its high-tech industry, we can discover the original nature is getting less and less even disappeared. Therefore, there is a group from south Taiwan comes out and announces moves for protecting our environment, especially is Poet Doctor--Zheng Kuei-Hai.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

¡@¡@The most parts of this seminar are completed in our leader's house. We connected to Internet by the computer, 56K modem and the help of ISP Internet Sever.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

¡@¡@Through this seminar we met lots of troubles especially in looking for the people who would like to accept our interview. Each face-to-face interview is spread everywhere in Kaohsiung. Besides, the members of our team all lived in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Therefore, once we have to gather the members for interviewing or discussing, there are often happened that the members were late because of the traffic problems or some private reasons. In order to avoid the problem above, we finally decided to choose train station in Kaohsiung city as our concentration location. After this decision we solved the previous problems greatly. Because of belief of no gain without pain, we twist the brain and did our best for completing this tough part-- interview. We are also glad that all of jobs were achieved smoothly and make us learn many things even the encourage from the teachers and classmates. They were also the biggest harvest for us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

¡@¡@During the time of finishing our seminar, we experienced and realized the words from Dr. Zheng Kuei-Hai. He said that it is useless if people only think the plan without practicing. It makes us realize that everyone doing his job has unchangeable position. Although we are not the most intelligent people, we know we the best when we cooperate all together.

In such short time, we paid our time and effort for achieving this beautiful dream. No matter we can get the reward or not, the memories for preparing this seminar is the most treasurable in our life. In addition, we still hope we could aware the attention of the citizen living in Taiwan for caring our only environment.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

¡@¡@The education problem in the countryside has already become the common consensus to our Taiwan people during these two to three years. However, we usually ignore and ruin the environment surrounding us inattentively. Lots of us complain about the industrial pollution. But nobody knows that even the bottle we throw or the shavings on the ground both make the same harm as what the industry do to our place. We found that we all see our ignorance as a naturally free from this seminar. We wouldn't see these problems from the textbooks in school. We once again got deeply feeling and understanding for this island through these interviews to Dr. Zheng and his friends. To care about our land is the eternal lesson for people. And visiting doctor Zheng Kuei-hai is just the beginning, not the only.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

l Oral interview: To record the contents of interviews and transfer them into the voice file I computer. l Internet: To take all what we do by cameras and V8. l Books and Magazines: Looking for related paper references to cover the unfamiliar with the interviewees. l Recording Mic and Recorder: To record the contents of interviews and transfer them into the voice file in computer. l Digital Camera, Instantaneous Camera and V8: To take all what we do by cameras and V8. l Scanner and Printer: To process the pictures by scanner and print the papers for read by printer. l Telephone and Fax: Using telephones and faxes to connect and communicate with interviewees. l Computer Software: Photo Impact 4.0/5.0, FrontPage 98/2000, Real Encoder, WS_FTP¡K l PS: School provided lots of those facilities above.

¡@¡@Thanks for Jiong-yi's V8 borrowing from his relatives, and Cheng-yu's books buying by his pocket money.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

¡@¡@First of all, we posted lots of related articles on BBS through Website. This way seems as foolish as making a futile search. However, the responses were very huge. Especially these two of them- the colleague who has been worked with Dr. Zheng and secretary Zhou in Pingtung country government who had been joined an activity to protect Kao-Ping River. The dialogue with them let us appeared much curiosity to Dr. Zheng.

¡@¡@We went to the publishing meeting of Dr. Zheng's new book in the beginning of October, and our captain was accidental interviewed by a local cable. Although he was too shy to answer too much, he still said "We wish to understand more about him by having a special visit to Dr. Zheng through this Internet competition." This is a very short response, but it could completely express our important considerations and expectations to Dr. Zheng and this competition.

¡@¡@In order to make this report more objective, we was looking for a lots of people who have relative to Dr. Zheng, which includes his classmates, doctors, writers, and member of the Legislative Yuan. Any suggestion or opinion can let Dr. Zeng or us have an attitude of identification and agreement.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

¡@¡@We hope use the power of Internet can let more and more people have chances to acquaintance with Taiwan¡¦s Natural Father¡XDr. Zhen Kuei-hai . Because of him, people can know Taiwan¡¦s life and Taiwanese¡¦s vigor. At the mean time, we can awaken more people to understand or pay attention to how close the environmental protection related to us. We usually watch the environment report on TV. From now on, not only in medium program can see Dr. Zheng, but also in network technology. What he cares about Taiwan in these years? What he has done? ¡Ketc. Such this questions will show up to everyone soon. Through the pluralistic of network, we believe we can arouse people have more conscious and expectant to this country.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

¡@¡@From the beginning, the secretary Zhou helps us a lot. Because of her, we know Dr. Zheng has a New Book Publish Party. Secretary Zhou introduced us to Dr. Zgeng systematically. Let us have chance to contact the doctor, and talked with him about the visited project. After this, we e-mailed to Qiu-Xing Yang (a member of the Legislative Yuan), through the assistant of congress office, the service agency (Miss Lin) arranged the visited time of meeting. Writer Jia-Ziang Wang, Poet Doctor Jiong-Ming Wang, Sanitation Bureau President Yang-Xing Zhen, and unexpected visits¡X teacher Rui-Yang Su, teacher Tie-Ming Wang and teacher Zheng-Yu Zheng. They are all have the opinion of affirmation and agreement to what Dr.Zeng has done.

¡@¡@Thanks for Kaohsiung Green Association Miss. Zhou¡¦s help, anonymous strangers, and Mei-Long flat noodle¡¦s mistress. Above all, it is fully express Taiwanese¡¦s passion.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

¡@¡@We learns the useful of computer technical, and visit skill, however, the biggest reward is to visited Dr. Zgeng and his friends. We thought that the famous public people must be very busy. It is impossible for them to have free time to let us ask questions. However, we are wrong! The people who we was visited are all assisted us with passion. Further more, they take care of us very carefully. This truth seems out of our expectations. In the past¡¦s society, the public people seem situated in high class. It is hard to make contact with them in that time. Maybe we are think too much this time. From the visit subject¡¦s very beginning, the people we visited did not have any ¡§hard to contact¡¦s¡¨ feeling. Fortunately, we did not suffer from any difficult problems. Nevertheless, we got lots of encouragement, which is the happiest news for us.
