Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

LungShan Temple is located in¡uManka¡vwhich was the beginning of Taipei, Taiwan. Now days we stand on different time points and have different feelings. While stepping on footsteps of our ancestors we would like to find out the trace that was silently concealed was carved by time.

2. Summary of Our Project

After the theme¡uhistorical landmark¡vof this contest -- LungShan Temple was affirmed, our team were official formed. First of all, we conducted a correct understanding on the historical culture, belief and legend, building architecture of LungShan Temple and the historical landmark of local development and then the entire structure was planned systematically. After then we started to plan the team to visit LungShan Temple and contacted the explanatory personnel of Lung Shan Temple for their help. After completion of site visit and interview and information collection, the entire team was split into teams to conduct editing integration and production of homepage by divisional team based on the talent of everybody.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Presently our school adopts ADSL on net and there are three net sections: administration, computer classroom and classroom computer net section. The computer classroom and classroom computer adopts virtual IP method. To serve outside, the entire school has four Linux servers, DNS, WWW, BBS and student account SERVER. DNS also has additional Proxy Server and WWW Server also takes care of the control of account numbers of teachers and employees of the entire school. The firewall of our school adopts Intel CPU and the system is the Gnat Box system bought from GTA Company.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Some of the information was blurred and difficult to be understood and interpretations of various groups were not uniform. Therefore we must seek advice from local people and seek assistance from related persons. In addition, to high school students, site visit could only be conducted during holidays and as the leisure hours of various team members were not uniform that there must be good coordination beforehand. When encountering term examination, apart from doing a good project work, we also had to take care of our schoolwork. Moreover, there was much knowledge we never touched before (such as: architecture). Without doubt, from facing a totally new knowledge to understanding, to going in-depth and to experiencing from it to gain results, this was a test.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Theme of this time allowed us to understand that quite often, beautiful things were just by our side.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In our school, the senior second year students were divided into¡uScience Group¡vand ¡uSocial(Literature)Group¡v. To students of science group, apart from being surrounded by science knowledge like physics, chemistry and mathematics, they also had their contacts with other aspect. They would not be just limited in the area of science. This theme research project and activity could allow students of science group to have a¡ubalance learning¡v. At normal times, students of¡usocial group¡v already had history course. The knowledge taught from the course mostly was abstract ideas but through this theme research project and activity, students of social group could understand clearly the original abstract idea that could not be easily understood. In this theme research project, this was not just the work of information collection; it was also required to chew and to digest this huge and disorderly information. Then it had to be expressed clearly by means of our own words. Besides, when there were different opinions within the team, everybody must coordinate and cooperate with each other with emphasis on team spirit. Internet teaching is¡uindependent¡vand traditional teaching method is interactive. A student who is sick leave at home can obtain the same new knowledge as other students through Internet and he/she will not miss the learning due to sickness and falls behind other students. However, this student will miss the expression of the teaching or separate supplements. But Internet can¡¦t reach this stage. However, internet can use sound and light effect to design a picture that looks like real and this¡ufreshness¡vis an advantage and compared with traditional teaching is can attract attention of students easily and students can be induced to learn. Therefore Internet and traditional teaching have their own pros and cons and their merits and demerits. If one can supplement each other to obtain its advantage, it will be a very good teaching method.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

In the beginning, in respect of preparation of related matters, we selected telephone, electronic mail and bulletin board of the participating team as the tool for liaison between each other. During information collection and site visit we used digital camera for pictures and we used recording and notes to record the information provided by the party concerned. We also used books in the library properly and also we used network to search for the required resource and finally we chose appropriate software (like: FRONTPAGE, Flash etc.) to produce our homepage Software Hardware FrontPage 2000 Computer Dreamweaver Digital camera Photoshop 5.0 Traditional camera PhotoImpact 5.0 Scanner Flash 5.0 Recorder Winzip WS-FTP School administration system-Library books inquiry system.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In school, teacher always prepared things well already and we just needed to memorize and to write examination papers. However, this theme research was entirely different! From the very start we had to do all preparatory work and our teachers were like our¡uliving dictionary¡vthat we could ask for advice for anything we didn¡¦t know but still we had to do the actual work. During this process, we contacted the explanatory personnel of LungShan Temple by phone and also we needed to communicate with the guards in LungShan Temple. In respect of homepage production, a few students sought advice from people outside of our school for problem of¡ufile compression¡v. When we were in LungShan Temple, many religious believers who had worshipped there for several tens of years or people who just came here for mere visits all came to us and expressed their concern. We also answered their questions in a friendly manner and explained to them in detail with patience.¡uTemple¡vwas not just a belief, it had its art and philosophy.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In the past, students always discussed where they would like to go after school, should it be Taipei Railway Station? Or the East District? When we were conducting this theme research and activities, schoolmates around us started to pay attention to our theme and they would express their concerns on us and gave us help. Even teacher often paid attention to the students and often provided us with their suggestions on our theme. In addition, students would understand that in the network there were so many unlimited and precious resources that there were not just lively chatting rooms.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The office of our computer teacher was in the library. As we often went in and out the library, the librarian knew about our theme and provided us with suggestions and from that we learned a lot of things! In LungShan Temple, apart from the original contacted explanatory personnel, there were also enthusiastic people (foreign couple) who allowed us to shoot picture. In addition, after we clarified our identities and intentions, without another word, the team leader of security guards in LungShan Temple took us to private places in the temple to take photos whatever was necessary. Team spirit was the important point of the entire project. Taking this opportunity, our team would like to express our thanks to the people who provided the above assistance and to other people who assisted us to achieve this theme.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Truthfully speaking, there was not much feeling during the first visit to LungShan Temple that it was nothing but an often seen temple. After listening to the explanation of the explanatory personnel we felt that it merely helped us to obtain more information. The only thing that attracted me was probably that piece of ancient wall and the press deck rock loaded with dreams¡K. However, when I went to LungShan Temple the second time, starting from that ancient wall, that kind of feeling started from my heart that was very special. It seemed that we already knew the temple very long time ago¡K..then during the following few visits, there were more and more feeling deeply carved in my heart. Then after I went back to school and looked at the homepage that everybody put in a bits and pieces of their effort, even I had sacrificed my sleep and valuable holidays it was really worthwhile! Especially due to this contest, we learned many things like teamwork, information collecting and contacts with people from outside etc. These were experiences that could not be acquired at normal times and there were proofs retained through the hard efforts of our ten members¡K¡K.and this was the experience that we would be reluctant to part with for the rest of our lives¡K.. In this theme research, everybody has many precious experience and we will show him or her one by one in our works. Some things cannot be told completely in just two or three sentences and sometimes even they can only be comprehended and cannot be described in words. In the course of the research, we were happy with other. However, it was inevitable that there would be times of sadness and sometimes there were even many foolish incidents like we locked ourselves outside of the computer classroom¡Ketc. In any case, anyway we had lots of people and it was an excitement! In short¡K¡Kmillions of words could not express them in full¡K¡K.no matter what kind of difficulty, finally we completed our project.
