Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are a group of young students who grow at Guishan, Taoyuan. For the earth that supplies everything we need, we tried to find the true local spirit of Guishan with gratitude.

2. Summary of Our Project

Guishan is located at the northeast part of Taoyuan County. Here, there are lots work opportunities, convenient traffic and it is near the city downtown. On the other hand, it still has many farm scenes that worth traveling.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

There are two computer classrooms in our school. There are forty computers in a classroom. We browse the cyber world by ADSL in the school. The speed of ADSL is fast. However, we have only 56k modems at home.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It seems that we have much time to build the web site. In fact, as third-grade students, we have constant tests. All of our time is almost to prepare the tests. Most of us are not good at computers at first. Besides, we didn¡¦t finish a work by ourselves before. Time flies. We had less and less time. However, We did little things. We thought we would fail again just like before. Other teams looked so vigorous. We were discouraged. Our teacher found out the truth. Mr. Chen wanted us to hold a meeting and report him every details. He instructed us how to solve our problems and encouraged us. ¡§Your team has many problems. I believe that other teams must have the same problems.¡¨ Yes, when we were tired, others must be tired. We had to overcome the problems. We had power again! After then, we still had many problems: the disks were damaged, retyped the information, rewrote the paragraphs, had no time to take pictures, couldn¡¦t develop the films¡Ketc. We solved the problems one by one. We were together, more efficient. Finally, we finished the web site in the last month. We jumped and laughed. We were so happy.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

At first, we thought we knew everything about hometown. However, during the process of study, we felt shamed very much. When the teachers asked us some questions about Guishan, we didn¡¦t know the answers, even some common senses. But now, we realize Guishan very much. We know the place we live more than our parents do. We have finished an impossible mission. It¡¦s hard to tell you how happy we are. Now, I can type fast and realize the value of time.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

During the activity, we were closer with our hometown. We went to many places by ourselves to take pictures and to visit many people. We learned from not only the books but also the nature.

(1)Many teammates were natives. We cared the surroundings we lived. We tried to make other natives understand and love the place.

(2)During the game, we were divided into many squads to finish the mission. We realized the power of cooperation. Besides, we also learned the skills of taking pictures and interviews. The future is a computer future. By the activity, we knew the convenience of Internet. We could access information we needed so quickly. We can learn as much as possible.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

(1)Used common cameras, digital cameras, and scanners to deal with the pictures we got.

(2)Use the software ¡§Ulead PhotoImpact.5.0¡¨ to get the effects we needed.

(3)Use ¡§frontpage 2000¡¨ to make homepages and ¡§flash 4.0¡¨ to make animations.

(4)Use ¡§Internet Explore 5.0¡¨ to test the homepages we made.

(5)Use E-mails, telephones to keep in touch with each other.

(6)Use ¡§Cute FTP¡¨ to upload the information to the server.

(7)Use a Walkman to record the information.

Thank for the authorities of our school supplying us computers, digital cameras¡Ketc. We became braver, more talkative during the activity. Besides, we knew better on computers.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

For the game, we interviewed the teacher, Huang Hao-ming, the director secretary of Guishan, Cao Rong-shu, and the owner of the Cao¡¦s old house, Cao Bi-rong. We had to decided the topics, make appointments, and choose proper teammates to interview. We felt that we were like real reporters. After interviews, the three people were glad to supply us any information we needed. We thanked them very much. We will do our best to make people know Guishan advanced.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1)The game is good for teaching courses, so the parents support us very much. They often encourage and help us. Some parents supply us some funny tour spots to enrich the content of the web site.

(2)The authorities of the school let us use computers at the noon breaks. We have enough time to type information and browse the Internet.

(3)By the activities, we know more about our hometown. We love the surroundings more. We will reserve the beautiful scenes for our generations. People can appreciate the nice environment forever.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thank Mr. Huang for supporting us some pictures we don¡¦t have. He also taught us some tips about interviews, social manners. We used these tips to interview he director secretary of Guishan, Cao Rong-shu, and the owner of the Cao¡¦s old house, Cao Bi-rong. We got the information we wanted smoothly. We also thank our classmates: Xu Ming-feng, You Ming-zhao and Lin Lin-xuan. Although they were not our teammates, they helped us type. They often dozed off in classes for typing at noon breaks. The person we want to thank most is Mr. Chen. He is like a god to us. He encouraged us, helped us solve all kinds of problems. He leaded us to interview the director secretary of Guishan, Cao Rong-shu, and the owner of the Cao¡¦s old house, Cao Bi-rong. He followed us to take pictures, took part in our meeting. He was our most important adviser. We couldn¡¦t succeed without him.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

(1)Only paper works are no use. At first, we thought our plans were perfect. We would be number one. No one could have so good idea. We could do every thing ourselves. We were too proud.

(2)Time flies We began the project in September. We thought we still had much time. We were slow doing our plan. Who knows that time flies. We once wanted to give up the project for having no time. We should save time and work effectively.

(3)Proper presser is good for increasing the efficiency. We worked better when the teacher pushed us.

(4)Uniting is power. Cooperation is important. One of the teammate worked hard; the others would work hard, too.

(5)Know our community further. At first, we were like passengers in the community. Now, after finishing the web site, we are like real residents in Guishan. We belong to the earth. We will update more information in the future to make more people understand Guishan.
