Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Pa-li-wan, Fengpin Township is the far south township along the Costal Mountains in Hualien County. The coastline along Fengpin is magnificent, and the only road, Highway No. 9, leads to beautiful sceneries. The first RDF (refuse derived fuel) manufacturing facility in Taiwan is located at the Amis community, Pa-li-wan, Fengpin Township, Hualien. The Amis area is famous for its picturesque mountains and sea, and has been able to keep its traditions because of its relative isolation. The first RDF facility challenged us to make the best effort in protecting our environment.

2. Summary of Our Project

The first solid waste derived from a fuel facility in Taiwan was launched on June 24, 2004. Experts say that refuse derived fuel facilities convert wastes into recyclable resources and softens dependency on original fuel sources. According to the documents at hand, the manufacturing system of refuse derived fuel (RDF), especially RDF-5 (densified RDF) involves putting solid waste into fuel pellets through crashing, selection, drying, mixing and palletizing. RDF-5 is uniform, high in heat value and low in pollutants, and allows easy storage, transportation and combustible stability. It’s an energy resource contributes to a recycle-based society. We learned how the RDFs are made and how friendly they are to our environment through interviews, visiting the manufacturing facility. We also got the issues of environment protection in our community and felt the importance of them.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We learn how to use DV and make homepage in this project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We need to protect our land in order to have a beautiful future. Let’s do it!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned how the RDFs are made and how friendly they are to our environment through interviews, visiting the manufacturing facility. We also got the issues of environment protection in our community and felt the importance of them.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use oral interviews and books, newspaper. cause we can really know that people who live here how think about this a fuel facility.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

RDF (refuse derived fuel) is a rather new environmental concept. The waste that has no use can be regenerated as fuel pellets. It’s a new option for waste disposal and a new source for energy. The children looked into how such facility affects their future through local research. They’re enlightened to care for the environment they live in.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The residents in Fengpin should be proud of the RDF plant, because it’s the first in Taiwan. Few people want to talk about waste, and some residents opposed it because they didn’t understand it. They now accept the plant because they know more.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

HADA, Hope Agent Development Association, Taiwan The Information Club of NHLTC, National Hualien Teachers College
