Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Northeastern Scenic Attractions are located at Taipei County`s northeastern coast, very close to the East China Sea. Most of it`s coastal line are rocky and hoggin beaches, making the area one of the most beautiful scenery attractions on Taiwan. Dotted alongside the coastal line are several fishing ports and the entire offshore area is situated at one of the richest fishing fields in western Pacific Ocean. The strong coastal wind engraved the coast rock into various shapes, some of them even become invaluable natural artworks. The Golden Melon Rock and Gio Fin are two most famous touring attraction villages with rich early Taiwan traditional things.

2. Summary of Our Project

The government recently developed Whale and Dolfin Watching Events in the notheast coast even make the site a tourist place. The Swordfish team shall act as a knowledgeable guide and lead our web guests deep into the area, with Aoti as a core center, in the hope that the most beautiful aspect of the site could be fairly represented.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

During web designing sessions, we are fortunate to have broadband connections all the time in school, a T1 subscriber`s line provided by TANET, built by Ministry of Education; at home, a private 512/68 KB ADSL access.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Aoti is 80 kilometers away from our school. To get there, traffic was a big problem for Swordfish. Once arrived, another headache showed up, we were constantly short of time. Our schedule must be tightly condensed. When Swordfish arrived at Au Dee, the rain was down pouring outside. But the rain stopped, as sudden as it started. It was quite an experience to be remembered. The Swordfish team members still need to participating regular classes and complete all homework. Under such circumstances, it is quite a challenge to keep our web design task going.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Anyway, our eight member Swordfish team survived. In the process, we learned how to work as a team, how to integrate materials collected and how to present ourselves. Whether or not wining any prize is no longer an issue. We appreciate these growing up experiences.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

From the working of our project, we found that using the Internet for teaching and learning been more effective than traditional methods. We can also introduce our beautiful traveling scenery to the whole people of the world. The same, we cal learn the other scenery spot from the other projects. The team working is the concept of our learning, from this competition, we found the group studying is very useful, we will use in our curriculum studying.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Photo Capturing Tools: digital cameras, scanner; Web Page Creation Software: Macromedia DreamWeaver 4, Photoshop 5., Ulead PhotoImpact 5, CorelDRAW 8, Macromedia Flash 5. Scanner was used to scan the pictures we captured, so they can be transformed into JPEG files, and then be shown on the web pages; and, we use Microsoft Word 2000 to edit our word files. We also apply a free web space to upload our homepage , after school, we still can work through the Internet. Cutftp is the tool to upload and download our files.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

This web competition provided us a opportunity to study Taiwan`s northeastern geology, environment and social characteristics in depth. We found that one of the local elementary school held its commencement ceremony in the sea. For those students, this is an experience to be remembered forever. We also learned that people there eat lots of seafood. This has much to do with the environment. Our textbook did not tell much, yet we learned much from these study activities.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The Swordfish appreciates our teammate Anthony`s mother, principal Lin of Aoti Elementary School. Without her help and support, our web design coverage task would not be possible to complete. Principal Lin has been there for more than 3 years, so she knows all nuts and bolts about the northeastern tip of this island. For example, she told us that one of the area`s schools requires that all graduates must take their certificates personally by diving into the sea. That is to say that all students must acquire diving skill, if they want to graduate. Wow… it makes us urbanites tongue in cheeks.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Finally, the Swordfish wants to extend our appreciation to aoti Elementary School`s principal and the whole faculty members, Principal Lin happens to be our teammate Anthony’s mother. Without her help, our study project could not have completed. After the visits and information collecting, there still have lots of after works, such as web authoring and designing, to be done. Now, the stage is set and the audience is expecting. All Swordfish`s teammate, go, go, go!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Last year, we also took part web design competition but failed. This year, we decide to try again. First of all, we choose a strong team. Every teammate has strong sense of responsibility, and does his own best to present himself and provide useful opinions. Secondly, we pick a good topic, because it is the key to success.
