Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school, Ta-Li Senior High School, is located in Wan-hua District (It was named as Lung-shan District before). The district used to be known as Mon-ga, famous for its glamour and uniqueness among the contemporaries in the past.

Mon-ga was once the most prosperous city in Taipei and it was exactly where Taipei City originated. With the passing of decades, it experiences various changes. The prosperity is declining, but it preserves certain customs as well as its own unique culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

We will introduce the Wan-hua District from the following six aspects: general introduction, local cuisine, historical sites, tourism resources, and bizarre blocks

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We worked both at home and in school. At home, most of us used the 56K modem for information inquiry and upload; only few of us had and could use the cable modem or ADSL. In school, we were able to work under the environment with optical fiber network connected to the Internet through ADSL.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Gathering materials¡GWan-hua is comparatively an old city, related information is not easily available, by iust simply visiting several places as we had imagined. Every time we inquired a place, it turned out that we had to go for two or even more places.

Controlling Schedule¡GIn order to coordinate the schedules of our team members, we decided to exchange our ideas and categorize our information collected on holidays. We also organized what we had collected onto the webpage. Thanks to help of Miss Shi of general administration department and the sir in charge of the school security system, a lot of trouble was saved concerning the school security alarm system so that our project could be done.

Collecting pictures¡GAll the members of our team tried the best to think any possible ways to collect related pictures. Each used his or her specialty to achieve the aim. Our captain worked especially hard, and he even spent four days going to relevant spots and collecting pictures.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

All of us in this project now have a better understanding of Wan-hua. During the process of information collection and field investigation, we experienced the attraction of Wan-hua in person. We are deeply moved by the hospitality of the local people. Participation in this project has not only increased our knowledge about the place but also broaden our horizon of life so that we get more integrated into the local community, we identify with the place, and we become enthusiasts, too.

Although it really took us a lot of time and efforts to finish the project, we have learned so much from it. Now you can call us Dr. Know-Wanhua-All. If you have time to visit Wan-hua, don¡¦t forget to contact us and we would be glad to be your tour guides!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.How does this project combine our school, community, and national curriculum guidelines¡H

This research project aims to offer people who would like to know more about Wan-hua an opportunity to understand its past, present and future. Besides, it also allows the students in our school to have a better understanding about the culture and customs here

2.What skills have we learned¡H Both the teachers and students have learned a valuable lesson; that is, how to complete a meaningful task through group work. We have learned many concepts, skills, and values that we are unlikely to learn in the classroom environment.

3.What cooperative approaches have we practiced¡H Through the collaboration of the project, the captain of our team has understand more about each team member's talents and has known the best division of labor since not everyone of us is capable of making a web page independently. 4.How do we further realize certain specific concepts¡H This project offered the students a great opportunity to understand the following values: First, ¡§teaching and learning are two sides of a coin.¡¨They help and improve each other. Second, ¡§no pains, no gains¡¨ holds true for any achievement.

5.How does our project integrate with the needs of school or classes¡H This project combines the computer class and geography report. Instead of simply memorizing what is written on the text without being able to use what is learned in real life.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Adobe Photoshop5 Computer Cute FTP4 Telephone Internet Explorer 5 Modem Microsoft Word 2000 Digital camera Microsoft Frontpage2000 Camera Macromedia Flash5 Scanner Macromedia Dreamweaver3 Library Ulead PhotoImpact5 Printer

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

A brand new impression towards Wan-hua has therefore been made through our research and project.

This place has experienced many changes, from the glamorous Mong-ga in the past to today¡¦s Wan-hua, which is still struggling to balance between the modern technology and traditional culture. The once prosperous city had declined into an old community that is in need of the planning and developing of the government.

In the process of doing our research project, we have not only observed its rise and decline, but also discovered the opportunity and hope it grows under the impact of both traditional culture and modern civilization. What we have obtained is more than the history knowledge. We have seen for ourselves the valuable assets that have been kept for decades without being lost or forgotten with the time passing.

It is the impact that has brought the integration in this place. At this moment, the integration of the past and the present is spreading and speeding up with the impact and the interaction of the old and new culture. The old is re-examined and the new is explored. The glamour in the past is to be continued; a whole new world is to be created.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

A brand new impression towards Wan-hua has therefore been made through our research and project.

This place has experienced many changes, from the glamorous Mong-ga in the past to today¡¦s Wan-hua, which is still struggling to balance between the modern technology and traditional culture. The once prosperous city had declined into an old community that is in need of the planning and developing of the government.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The webpage could not have been done without the help from so many enthusiastic local residents in Wan-hua. For example, the people working in the Wan-hua District Office kindly helped our inquiry and search on information when we went there to collect related materials on historical sites, tourism resources, unique lanes, and future developing trends, etc.

Our school is also very generous and helpful to us. We can have free access to the digital camera and the CD-writer. Besides, our principal and our director contributed quite a few wonderful ideas and suggestions for us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

It is the stereotype of many people that Wan-hua seems to be a place for the homeless and vice despite its once glamorous past, a ghost town forgotten or deserted by the government. However, the fact is not like that at all. Because of this project, we now have totally different understandings of Wan-hua. It is a community with humanity and hospitality. Moreover, it is one of the important parts under the design of our government to transform Taipei into a cultural city.

¡§In order to prepare for walking longer and farther, here we take a rest.¡¨ We come to more and more agree with this saying. We stayed up late almost everyday, so we all had black eyes like pandas the next day, and a lot of pimples popped out. Our captain even caught a cold. But we overcame the difficulties we faced.
