Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in the area of Taiwan’s power center, the Affiliated Experimental Elementary School of Taipei Municipal University of Education is just 350 meter away from Taipei Guest House. As time goes by, the Guest House and the school are available for common people nowadays. But the area is still the political, cultural and educational core of Taiwan.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.The difficulties of resource and information obtaining: There is very limited information available for Taipei Guest House. We tried to collect the information in every possible way. 2. The eleven members belong to nine different classes and two different grades. The available time among all members is just two hours per week, for the rest of the time team members met with the teachers respectively. To make us work more efficiently, we established a check online that everyone had to sign up and report about their works everyday. By doing this, everyone know what he or she and others have to do for the day and how far has he or she and others have done. And it’s even harder for us to arrange the time to interview with the architect. 3. Our visit to Taipei Guest House was delayed for almost two months, for the time we planned to visit during October, 2006 wasn’t capable. The Guest House was closed in that month preparing the national banquet. 4. It took us great efforts to find the architect team that repaired the Guest House, because we mistook the foundation arranging the reopen ceremony as the architect team at the beginning.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We present our work through designing our website; we wish to make the architecture and story of Taipei Guest House one of a kind in Taipei and even Taiwan.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The Integration of the Project and Nine-year Coherent Education (check on the official name plz) To match up with the school’s theme topic for the Nine-year Coherent Education, “Step Into the City of Taipei”. We made the best use of our community to help the students to explore and admire the monuments; hoping to form the volunteer team for the monuments in the city.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Personal computers and laptops are the necessary equipments for the teachers and students in this project, and the Internet is a useful manner for doing research. Digital cameras are used in taking pictures and the pictures can be edited instantly. We used recording equipment when we interviewed others; by doing this we made our research more complete. And our project could be known better by designing a website for it. Moreover, doing everything on the computer and laptop saves the papers and ink that we had to use in traditional research method.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Our “Junior Monument Detective Team “members include students, teachers, and parents. Though the well-prepared research, interviewing the architects and the volunteers of the Taipei Guest House, we tried to uncover the mysterious face of it. Furthermore, we did advanced information collecting on the Internet and other channels, and attended the reopening ceremony to know the Guest House more thoroughly.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We didn’t realize that architects do more than jut building houses, repairing the monuments is also one of their jobs. It takes more than the professional skills to repair monuments, knowing the history of the building and they way it was built are also important. It’s a surprise for us to see how different the way Taipei Guest House is repaired than other buildings, and the architects treated the building so carefully like a surgeon performing an operation. The business of repairing buildings is just like the monuments they repair, old but not out of time.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Architect Cheng-shou Lin spent many of his time teaching and guiding us. Many concepts he taught us came from international seminars, and those information is not available to find on the Internet and books.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

'The Return of the Luxurious Mansion' is not only a research, but also the scheme of cooperation between teachers and students of a national primary school, invite every subject doctor to carry on interview, because their generosity accepts interview, could make us finish this case study, can introduce them to Taiwanese teachers and students, this is our honour.
