Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Instant noodles have, undoubtedly, become a trend of our times and almost a part of our lives. This pop culture reflects on the streets where we often see people carrying instant noodles with them. Inspired by such a trend, we are extremely curious about instant noodles and would like to know exactly how important they are in people’s mind. Considering our vicinity, we chose to investigate in Taipei City. We want to find out how dependent Taipei People are on instant noodles as they live in such a fast-paced city, and how much they know about instant noodles. In addition, we would like to understand a little bit about the types of instant noodles that Taipei People often choose to eat. Nowadays, as people care more and more about health and life enjoyment, eating instant noodles is no longer purely for filling the stomach. Lots of healthy food ideas and innovative breakthrough allow the products and the ways of consumption to become more and more diversified. In short, the popularity of instant noodles is the fact. Such fact urges us to continue with our study of instant noodles, as we feel even more curious and awed.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our focus will be on people’s knowledge, thought, feeling, eating habit, popular trend, etc. about instant noodles. We will also see what influences they bring into people’s lives in both material and spiritual dimensions. As instant noodles are more or less a popular trend in Taiwan and people care more and more about health and keeping healthy, we also want to understand how to eat instant noodles in a healthy, tasty manner with a peace of mind. In our questionnaire, we test people’s common sense about instant noodles. We want to see whether people have primary knowledge about this tasty delicacy the same time when they are enjoying the food.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

School networks are mostly designated networks. Most students use ADSL network at home. Cowell’s network is optical network.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the beginning, we received little response when we were distributing the questionnaires. This largely slowed down our progress. Afraid that we might spend too much time on distribution, we split the job and expanded our coverage. By increasing our covering area, the chance of success would be increased undoubtedly.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This research project not only provides us with a better understanding about instant noodles, but also clarifies people’s previous myth about them. The project is also able to expand such particular food culture of Taiwan’s to the whole world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Regarding the subject of “citizens and society”, the integration between citizens and lives is perhaps the part that is mostly stressed. As an individual in the society, we may be more familiar with our own societal customs if we have further understanding about modern food culture and popular trend, and we may introduce our customs more clearly and accurately to foreigners to help them better understand our particular attractions. In the class of Home Economics, we may also introduce new ways of eating instant noodles and provide leisure diet with more fun.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Photo impact, Photoshop, MS Paint, Dream weaver, FrontPage, MSN Messenger

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We distributed the questionnaires in different locations to people and understood what common sense they had about instant noodles, then we announced the answers and explained to them in detail so that they could not only understand instant noodles more clearly and accurately, but also knew that instant noodles were not just a type of junk food that people thought, but rather a good memory in heart for many people. It accompanied Taiwan from labor class to high-tech level. We publicize our website on the Internet so that people can browse and get a deeper understanding.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

For the public, people can absorb all kinds of knowledge about instant noodles that they have outgrown from being an innutritious junk food full of preservatives and MSG to an enhanced food that people spend a lot of time to improve with new ingredients, new seasonings, new preservation technologies, more diversified tastes, new packaging skills and marketing tactics. For suppliers, they may understand people’s needs and preferences to help them improve and urge them to satisfy people’s tastes.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We chose to distribute our questionnaires around the popular Asiaworld business circle and NTU campus – good places for people’s gatherings. We really appreciate those good-hearted people in NTU and Sungshan District and those who accepted our questionnaire survey. We truly appreciate. Thank you very much.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The main discover is that the instant noodles, which we assumed would contain a large amount of preservatives, do not contain any preservatives. This is our biggest surprise at the beginning. We also found that the ingredients have quite good quality, as compared to the past. The nutritious value has improved, and the production technology has also advanced. There are diverse flavors as well. From instant noodles, we saw the innovation and advanced technology of Taiwanese. The most interesting surprise and discovery occurred during the questionnaire survey process. We encountered a young girl who only speaks English yet her parents speak and read Chinese; a young lady who designed her own questionnaire before and taught us how to make a good questionnaire and what areas to improve; two people whom we excitedly approached yet found illiterate; a group of elders who were leisurely drinking coffee and chatting in front of the Taipei Arena; alumna of our school; a group of nice pedestrians who chatted with us and suggested us to send questionnaires on the Internet. Those are incredible and exciting things.
