Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Although Singapore may be a small country, it is one of the world’s most fast forwarding multi racial country with many young youths who have inspiring hobbies and hidden talents within them. Youths in Singapore have a strong determined sense to strive for success and has hence produced a number of successful and outstanding women with inspiring and great achievements.

This website would greatly appeal to people who want to know more on how successful and great Singapore is in producing so many young successful women both with good characters and talents. This would be an insight and eye opener to those who fail to discover for themselves the hidden potential of our young ladies who can be young leaders of tomorrow’s society. This would be a good opportunity for teens to see the light and discover their hidden abilities within them through the stories of these successful young ladies.

2. Summary of Our Project

We have learnt many lessons during the process of completing this webpage. We have learnt that actually, interests do not all stem from local countries, as the above interviewees also have their interests derived from other countries. Singaporean youths, and especially girls in this case, are open to new things and ideas. Though so, we are still Singaporeans at heart. In the present society, there is a fusion of outside elements in the society and they help to stir certain uniqueness in these Singaporean youths. The youths are our leaders of tomorrow. Unique interests and sincere determination to succeed will enable them to gain a wider perspective which will definitely help in making Singapore a more vibrant and active society. We strongly believe that our youths will help bring Singapore soar to higher heights. We are working towards that day.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The leader of the project had faced great difficulties trying to get her team members to meet up together for the project. In fact, the team members could only manage to do the project together on every Tuesday and Thursday. The 2 h session on both days proved to be a challenge for the students because time was really tight. With common tests and other examinations flooding them, it was commendable that the girls managed to cope with their project and schoolwork well enough to balance them equally.

The team also shared one another’s burden when some of the team members were absent during the sessions. They had to fill in the work of the absentees which meant double work for them. They were understanding towards the absentees and had not complained about it.

The team had a very memorable experience of interviewing people. It was their first time conducting an interview with strangers. They had to learn from scratch on the techniques of interviewing people. The whole process was very enjoyable as the girls had a great conversation with them.

It was very heartening for all of us to see the fruit of our labour. All the hard work the girls had put in had not gone to waste. It was indeed a rich experience for them and they truly missed the days of working with one another!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

This project has a close association with information technology and the use of the network, thus the usage of information tools is a significant part in the success of this project.

We used tools like notepad which was a simple but handy program to design our web pages. We also used photo editing workshops such as Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for editing our photographs and graphics to enhance the website’s appeal to readers.

Macromedia Flash was used to add a touching effect and edge to our website.

Moreover, digital cameras were used to take photographs of the interviewees for its high resolution and quality.

For efficiency in the distribution of jobs and information, MSN messenger and emails became our channel of communication. Members were able to relate latest updates even if we were not together and this lead to a quicker and higher efficiency for our project. Through practice, we learnt how to use these tools and technologies to their fullest means. The experience we gained in this project would definitely help us attain even more in the future.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the process, we did conduct many interviews, both personally and online. On some occasions, our interviewees were too busy to meet up with us, so our only alternative was the emailing system.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The society in Singapore portrays the new generation as spolit and pampered brats. However, our website can change the mindset of these people by showing the various accomplishments our young ladies have made. This would allow them to open their eyes and see that our young ladies in society are working as hard as they are. Moreover, young teenagers around the globe would be able to connect with these people despite cultural differences. However, there is one thing that connects them. That is, aspiration and dreams ; the determination to empower and unite. Through all these interests and accomplishments, we would be able to inspire and motivate every teenager out there.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First of all, we had our school right behind us to support us and guide us along the way. Our teachers were there every step of the way. When times seemed dark and hopeless, our teachers were there to shower us with countless words of encouragement and that made us move on. Moreover, our schoolmates not only motivated us but also assisted us in getting the various contacts of the interviewees. This definitely played a big part in our project. Not to mention, various websites like wikipedia helped us tremondously in the further understanding of the various interests and hobbies featured on our website.
