Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Guishan sounds like a small place in the mountains. “Gui” means a turtle and “Shan” means mountain in Chinese. However, in fact, it has a convenient communications. It takes less 10 minutes to go to Taoyuan Train Station which is the most prosperous place in Taoyuan. Besides, it is also near the biggest city, Taipei, in Taiwan. Our hometown has great green hills and clear wate

Guishan County is located in front of Shoushan Rock Guanyin Temple which is a third grade national place of historic interest, was built in Qing Dynasty(1741). There is a massif like a turtle and is divided into seven villages. One of the villages is called “Rabbit Hole” because there were a lot of hares living here before. The most famous industries are coal mine and making bricks. When the coal mine industry declined in 1960s, the brick industry replaced it. The soil of “Rabbit Hole” village is thick clay which is the best material for making bricks. Making bricks not only brings us a big fortune but also produces huge smog pollution to us. It is big problem how to get a balance between developing economy and protecting surroundings.

Now, the main economic activity is Guishan Industry Area. There are many famous companies here, like BenQ, Taiwan Wacoal…etc. These companies give us a lot of working opportunities.

2. Summary of Our Project

Junior high school students are the phase of rapid changing of their bodies, full curiosity about the opposite sex. We hope we can help junior high schools students realize, respect the opposite sex by visiting Taiwan Wacoal which is famous for making underwear

Our project is divided into three parts: oral interviews, local visiting and questionnaire.

Oral interviews: There are three times. The first one was to interview the general manager Zhuan-Yi Chen some knowledge about the bra. The second one was to interview the designer Xiu-Mi Wu more details about how to design the bra. The third one was to interview Min-Cang Hong. He lead us to pay a visit to the bra factory in Guishan Industry Area.

Local visiting: There are two times. One is visiting the bra museum. The other one is visiting Taiwan Wacoal nearby our school. We realize the full procedures of making bras.

Questionnaire: We chose the girls of three classes in our school randomly to realize what questions they will think about before buying the bra, buying the bra and after buying the bra.

During the lunch break every day, we discussed together, communicated with one other to improve the project.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school uses fibre optics cable; the bandwidth is 100Mbps. There are many computers that can surf the internet. Besides, there is another web server, carring out Apache.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest probelm we ecnouter is starting too late. We have litte time. We even have a great impact on changing the research topic. Thanks for Mr. Da-Hai Xu and Mr. Qing-Yi Wu request a favor of the former president of PTA, Mr. Zhuan-Yi Chen. He made use of influence in the company to help us a lot of things. Therefore, it is very smooth to interview, to visit.

Then, we thought that it was easy to make the website; in fact. we had more and more problems when we were making the website. Thanks for the school teachers for sloving the problem of making web pages.?

Besides, how to translate the Chinese web pages into English ones is another big headache. Thanks for the teachers in Ming Chuan University and Mr. Sun-Ji Dai translated the web pages for us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Wisdom grows with experience. At first, we just tried to do something. If we did a good job, we will get a prize; if we did a bad job, we lost nothing. Moreover, we had the experience that other students didn't have.

It was very tough to do the project in the lunch break every day. We were sleepy every afternoon, especially we are the ninth grade stundents who are going to have a entrance exam to senior hight in May. Whenever I saw other team memebers and the teachers worked so hard, I gaving up the idea of quitting. I never give up!

For the experience of the contest, we become good friends. And know how to work together.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We encouraged our students to organize a team by themselves to realize Taiwan Wacoal in the Guishan Factory Area near our school. They finished the job by the help of the volunteer, the community people and the teachers. They translated the Chinese web pages into English web pages. They can introuce their hometown to the world by the power of internet. The contest aroused the consciousness of the students' native place, discoverd the importance of English and the consciousness of being a member of the global village.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Tape recorder: Keep trace of the process of interviewing. It is convenience to recall and put things in order later. Scanner: Scan the information on the book into digital format. Printer: Print the data on the paper. It is convenient to revise and correct data. Digital camera: Shoot the pictures we need at any time. Digital video recorder: Record the motion film. Notepad : Edit and put the information in order only for text. Microsoft Excel 2000: The statistic of data, drawing the graph. PhotoImpact 10: Edit pictures. Gold wave: Edit sound files.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During the process of activity, the group members and teachers use the spoken languageto tell other students what the bra is, what Taiwan Wacoal is, the relationship between the community and the school. We also tell the world what the famous Taiwan Wacoal is good at making, the process of making the bra, how to maitain them by website,Email, andMSN. Each one of the group memebers is a good ambassador for taking part in the whole journey.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The biggest impact and influence of the project on us islearning thing from doing it. Our courage is just like the newborn claf that is not afraid the tiger. We didn't think about too much. After we disscussed the outline, arranged the assignments, we did our best. When one of the members had a question, other members and the teachers would helped him during the luch break to slove the problem. The lesson what we learned is 'JUST DO IT.'?

Now, take a look at the pass, if we just thought of how hard the job would be, we were just a group of studetns who knew only how to study hard for the entrance exam, but lacked of the precious experience of group working.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Mr. Qing-Yi Wu is one member of our community. He suggested us to visit Taiwan Wacoal when we failed to visit other companies. Manager Zhuan-Yi Chen is the most important volunteer who gives us a hand to finish the project. He is the former chairman of Parent-Teacher Association. He gave us many good ideas to develop the project. He is very busy, but he accepts our interviews three times including taking us the Guishan factory.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found that the bra was full of knowledge. The bra can not only help women look more beautiful, but also fix the shape of the breast, get up the breast. We know what bras should we wear in different situations.

The lesson what we have learned is that before doing one things, you have to have detail plan in advance and yield twice the result with half the effort. For example, after visiting the Gueishan factory, we were tired of putting the information in order because we didn't prepare the questions we wanted to ask well. We had to take the notes by listening to the tape again and again.

The biggest discovery is that the bra has a great effect on modeling the body, like the applicatio of the steel circles, pads and the skill of wearing...etc.
