4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Each member of our group did not realize this project would be so difficult until we started it. We found several problems after we start to conduct the project. At first, we thought that problems would be solved by the time, but the truth proves we are wrong. However, with the demanding work required by the projet, we learned some crucial skills to solve these problems. Problems which slow down our process the most are editing, interview, and technology application. Editing is the part that took up most of the time. We had to do thorough research and arranged every detail painstakingly. We did everything we could in order to collect and verify information. Interviewing the spokemen of major department stores and high-ranking officials in Kaohsiung City was difficult, especially for high school students. Our schedule to do interview happened to clash with the vigorous campagining period of election of city mayor. We were forced to change our schedule and had problems to get the permission to interviewing the candidates of city mayor. Besides, we also encountered difficulty while trying to persuade the spokesmen of the three major department stores to accept our interviews. We had to convince them with our sincerity and relentless efforts. Arranging interviews definitely took a lot time, but we believe we've got quite a lot of valuable information through these interviews. As for technology application, members in technique team do need stamina to go through it all. Numerous discussions had took place before we reached every agreement and moved a small step forward. Despite all these problems and difficulties mentioned above, we did not give up. We belive that when a problem is sloved, our experiences grow.We all want so much to present the perfect fruit of our hard work to readers aroudn the world and help them learn more about our city and the significance of the SSD.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The Internet has revolutionized the way peopel educate themselves. The International Schools Cyber air Project has given us a precious opportunity to educate ourselves and learn from each other. During the process of conducting the project,we learn a lot about a whole new world which used to be distant and vague. Now, we have a clearer idea about the business, the transportation, the urban planning in our city. Most important of all, we now have a vision for a better future and believe each of us matters in realizing this vision.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The resources found on the internet have been really helpful to our research. Conducting this project once again proves the efficiency of the Internet, regarding collecting information and researching. In the past this type of research would have taken months.

We would like to thank all the people who supported us and provide us first-hand information and constructive advice. Before we started doing research on the SSD and Kaohsiung City, we did not realize there were so many interesting aspects of our city. The more we researched, the more we wanted to find out. Besides, every team member has refined their skills of research as well as designing web page. We are all grateful for the opportunity to work on such a project.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The following tools are helpful for us to complete our project. The Internet provides easy and free communication so that team members can use web phones to discuss the details.Net meeting saved us a lot of time and money! While doing net meeting, we could send important files, digital photos or information to each other on the Internet simultaneously. Digital photos are convenient for web page design. We also use DV and sound recording pen to record interviews and field trips. Printers and CD burners are valuable in preserving important documents. Scanners are used to upload information onto our webpage. Governmental and civil publications help us realize the policy and regulations of government. Image-editing software like Photo Impact helps us modify pictures and photos. Design-editing software like Microsoft Office series assist us to finish the webpage.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To explore the business field in our research, we first decided whom we wanted to interview and then contacted the persons concerned via email. In order to gain their support we made sure they know who we were, the purpose of this project, and our plans methods of conducting this research. We tried very hard to persuade the managers of the department stores and business owners to spare some time from their hectic schedule for interviews. After the interviews, they were quite impressed with our determination and interest in the development of the SSD as well as Koahsiung City.

Regarding interviewing high-ranking government officials, our team also used every possible resources and connection to get an opportunity to interview them. Although the schedule of interviews were forced to changed many times, we finally succeeded in interviewing all the people we wanted to talk to and gain lots of first-hand insightful information. At the same time, we impressed these officials with our maturity and enthusiasm. Through these interviews, these officials alos learned what teenagers like us thought about the urban planning and the development of the SSD. Hopefully, in the future, we can work togetger with the government and prive business or industries to create a better city.

We are truly grateful for the business owners and the government officicals. They sincerely provided us with tremendous amount of information and research content. Their help is one of the key to the success of our web page.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Most Kaohsiung residents praise highly about the the improvement of Kaohsiung in recent years, but not so much about the improvement of the Sanduo Shopping district. Our project, on one hand, is meant to make the audience learn more about the Sanduo Shopping District. On the other hand, this project offers thorough analysis of current and future development of the SSD so that the government and the public can both participate in the urban planning of this area. People always regard the SSD as a place for shopping only. Few of them realize its great potential of becoming an international shopping district. We hope our project is going to reach as many audience as possible to encourage the government and residents to rediscover the SSD, and work together to fulfil its potential. We look forward to a brand new prosperous SSD which offers pluralistic functions and services, a new Kaohsiung landmark which can best represent this city’s characteristics.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The project is definitely a teamwork put together with our teammates and many other supportive people. Firstly, we want to thank Miss Syu from the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, Miss Chen from the Far East Department Store and Miss Syu from the Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation, Miss Wu from the Mass Rapid Transit Bureau, and Mr. Lin from Kaohsiung City and Changting bureau for their comprehensive information. Secondly, we would like to thank Mr. Huang from Jyunying Bureau and Mr. Sie from Changting Bureau for granting us the opportunity of interviewing them. We also have to thank the teachers and students in our school for filling out the questionnaires. Of course, our work could not be completed on time without help from our teachers, Mr. Jiang Rongyi, Mr. Hong Jyunyuan and Miss Hong Manjiang. The three teachers have been offering us instruction on webpage design and translation. In the end, we would like to thank the people who have be supportive about this project. We truly appreciate every effort and advice you offer. Without the help of you all, we could never complet this project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

From interacting with one another, we see the unique potential of each team members. Each team member contributes what he/she has or knows to consolidate this huge project. They also invested a great deal of their time and energy to complete this seemingly impossible mission. Before the completion of the project, we encountered many setbacks and suffered a lot of pressure, be it the interviews or webpage design technology. But these hard-earned precious experiences have become our pride. After participating in every small step of this project, each team member also realize the importance of team work, negotiation and cooperation. In addition, this project makes each team member become more determined, confident, and ready for more challenges. This project also helps us find out so much more about the Sanduo Shopping District and be proud of the improvement our city has made in past few years. We are growing more optmistic about the future of the SSD and our city as the project approches its completion.
