Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is the heaven of nature lovers because it is by the Golden Phase Mountain and the Keelung River,. With this as the backdrop, Xi-Hu campus is resounding with the chirpping of birds and croaking of frogs. Three years ago, we started the eye protecting 'Gazing Afar' exercise using Wind Records 'Forest Caprice' as the background music. We realized that nature could be beautiful music if you just know how. Our community is ,therefore, the ideal place for pursuing the music of nature.

2. Summary of Our Project

From the roaring of the waves to the sounds of birds and bugs, Winds Records has produced a series of nature music. Due to our fondness for all these music, we decided to introduce the uniqueness of Winds Records and the ideology and creativity of Mr. Yang, the founder, through our project 'Meet the Sky'. Other than knowing the process of producing a record, we hope our students will come to love music. We also hope to nurture their care and appreciation for nature and their respect for the copyright.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school has excellent computer facilities. Now we have two brand new computer labs and a multi-media studio, and each teacher has a computer. There are over 200 computers to satisfy every teacher's and student's needs. We have an ADSL provided by the Department of Education (Downstream speed: 2Mb, upstream speed: 512k). We also have another ADSL (Downstream speed: 8Mb, Upstream speed: 640k) for our teachers and students to use. Besides, we provide our teachers and students with other equipments such as digital cameras, DVs, scanners, recording systems and software for photos and sound effect. Our school also provide everybody with his or her own e-mail account, space for personal websites and a hardware space of 120MB (1GB for each teacher) to satisfy everybody's needs for the internet service so as to establish his or her personal website. With those facilities, we cherish every equipment we can use and every chance we can learn. The teachers at the computer lab also make every effort to organize learning programs and all kinds of on-line competitions to improve the ability of the teachers and the students with the hope that everyone will be a master in using computers and the internet service.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

One of the most frustratingtime during our making of the project was the time when Miss Wu took us to search for the beautiful sounds of our campus. Miss Wu brought a lot of special equipments with her. When we tried to record the sounds of campus, the frog croaking we had always proud of suddenly disappeared, because the season was wrong. We had thought it would be a lot of fun to record in a studio, but we kept singing out of tune, so it took many hours to finish the recording.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

From this project, we have the happy discovery of the sounds of the community and campus we usually ignored. More importantly, we have realized that if we do not pay proper attention to these nature sounds, they might disappear someday. We also realize the difficulty of music creation, and the harm piracy has on music industries. Therefore, we should not buy pirated music to encourage more music creation.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Music is a very important part of life. Without it, life would be very dull. Our theme of the project is about Wind Records’ creation of nature music, healing music and Mr. Yang Jin Cong’s encounter with music. Music education belongs to the Art and Humanities field in Nine Year Consistent Curriculum. Other than the school classes, Xi Hu also has clubs of Cello, flute, traditional music and ocarinas to enhance the experiences of our students and become one of our school special elements. Wind Records emphasizes mostly on nature music, they care and record the precious and beautiful Taiwanese music. From the waves to the frogs to the tribal heavenly songs, Wind Records takes it as a mission of cultural heritage. From the concept of ecology preservation, we also took our students to know and care about the bugs and birds and all the lives in the campus.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Internet Digital Camera Recording Pen Digital Recorder Image card Scanner Telephpone Soft wares

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We started the project as little music men. We listened to various nature music, interviewed music producers, recorded the sounds of nature, and recorded the Wings of Dreams. Our members must share their understanding of music production with their teachers and fellow students. Eventually, we would present the recorded “Wings of Dreams” to the school as the symbol of school.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Some people use music to write about their lives, some use music to pass on culture. During the creation of the project, we took our naps with the music of Wind Records for 3 months. Our hearts were touched and comforted by these music. Miss Wu told us that she went to the mountains and creeks alone carrying heaven equipments to record the sound of bugs and animals. When she showed the pictures as well as the music to us, we were quite shamed by it, because these are birds we see every day. Yet, we had not cared, and therefore not know and not to understand. Miss Wu enlightened us the idea of a little more care, a little more attention, and music would fill our world always.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Wind Records has been dedicating in brings beauty to the society. As Xi-Hu Elementary School has been an outstanding school in various fields, Wind Records has been in close association with Xi-Hu. It has offered Xi-Hu with the music as the background for our “Gazing Afar” activities; it has helped to bring students to the famous Eco-pond on the campus and recording the beautiful sounds there.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We have always thought that the croaking of the frogs in the Eco-pond and the hooting of the night owls on the campus are the most beautiful sounds. But from the experience of our project, we realized that even the frying pan of our mothers makes beautiful sounds too. Because it is full of love. Just as Miss Wu mentioned, beautiful sounds can be discovered all around us, if we pay attention to it. So let’s all try to grasp the beauty by our side and cherish it.
