Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is one of the four Asian Tigers situated in Southeast Asia. Although it is the center of transportation, its densely populated geography makes it dependent on imports to makeup for its resource inadequacies. Therefore most resources are transported by sea. The sea techniques are advanced including deep-sea fishery, inshore fishing, and deep-sea trade etc. Nan-Fang-Ao, a fishing port located in the eastern part of Taiwan prospered in the inshore fishery of Taiwan as a result. Nan-Fang-Ao Fishing Port is the largest fishing port of eastern Taiwan. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides, and the sea on one side. It has unique sceneries. Inside this small area, there are three fishing ports signifying considerable catches. First Fishing Port was built during the Japanese Colonial Period in front of Nan-Tien Temple. Second Port was built in 1955 due to the overcrowding of First Fishing Port. It is situated in Nei-Pi, thus, it is otherwise known as “Nei-Pei Fishing Port.” Third Fishing Port situated in front of Jin-An Temple was completed in 1965. At present, it is open for large encircling net (purse seine) vessel and deep-sea vessel anchor. Due to aggregated upwelling and China coastal current brought about by Kuroshio Current in adjacent areas, considerable catch is available all year long. The majority of the catch is pelagic fish types found eastern coast surfaces of Taiwan. Mackerels are in season every April, May, and October. Although Mackerel fishery can be dated way back, and catch methods varied as times changed, Nan-Fang-Ao has abundant supplies of Mackerels all year long. Therefore, Nan-Fang-Ao is also reputed as “Mackerel’s Hometown.”

2. Summary of Our Project

The Mackerel is the major catch source in Nan-Fang-Ao. It takes up to over 90% of the total production volume in the nation. The place of origin has the raw materials needed to engage in high-profit making businesses. Mackerel products such as canned fish, shredded fish, and dried fish are sold both locally and overseas. It has contributed greatly as a protein source and economic developments in fish villages. In recent years, news reports have pointed out that excessive deep-sea fishing in Taiwan resulted to sharp reductions in shoals of fish in the ocean ecology. Some also pointed out that few factories that neglected environmental protection dumped toxic chemicals, or wastewaters into the water. Shoals of fish were consequently contaminated. Being on top of the food chain, those toxic wastes eventually enter our bodies. This study has been conducted to give an insight on Mackerels and discussions have been made on how ocean resources can be appreciated to improve the existing conditions. The ecological environment will be given a new life if we, the general public put in efforts for the sake of future generations so that they will also have a good environment to live in. Let us all work toward that ideal!

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the beginning of production, we lacked one who knew how to use Flash as our members were all volunteers. None of us knew how to use Flash and this issue bothered us for quite some time. Fortunately, our adviser found a Flash expert in time for the production progress to be carried out as scheduled. After all members had been found, we faced another tough issue. Some of the members were unable to attend scheduled assemblies. It would cause progress delay and each member would not be able to get latest updates. In order to solve the problem, we discussed it at an assembly hoping to find a way to complete our work on schedule. Finally, to solve the problem, it was decided that each of us finished our own works separately. Assemblies were held during lunch time and lunch breaks.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

During the webpage production process, focus was placed on individual team communication and coordination. In terms of teamwork, although technique, knowledge, and experience were rather inadequate, each member was able to participate in group assemblies. Time allotment for discussion was quite limited so each member had to make use of their spare time during holidays to conduct discussions and execute production. Many frustrating problems were encountered during the period, but after communication among the supervisor and team members, these problems were solved. There was also the team collaboration problem. The team captain and the teacher would follow-up on the progress on due dates. Members falling behind schedule were followed up constantly. It takes teamwork and labor division to achieve a goal. More importantly, teamwork is the key to success. As the deadline was getting closer, everyone became highly alert. So, teamwork was displayed. After the winter vacation, everyone went to school to engage in production and discussion works. Member attitude greatly affects team operation. When someone slacks off and becomes passive, the leader plays an essential role. He has to check not only individual works, but also joint efforts of everyone. We have learned a great deal in computer techniques, and interpersonal relationships. We have gained a lot through this experience. After all, teamwork is the key to success!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

With technological advancement, we have much greater needs for information than we used to. Under government policy of information integrated education, we have learned a lot from data collection, interview process, webpage production to work upload. Without information t curriculum as basis in information technology, we probably wouldn’t have been able to join the competition. It allowed us to apply what we have learned. Meanwhile, we have also learned additional invaluable information related techniques. 'Inshore fishing' had been described through textbook pictures and texts in geological science related subjects over the past. Our understanding of it remained at theory level. Our visit to Nan-Fang-Ao changed all that. We got to know Formosa Taiwan, our hometown at a deeper level. We also understood better the terrain, port, marine fishery, and geography of the eastern part of Taiwan. This more or less increased my knowledge more than textbooks could.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The information technology adopted by us includes: e-mail, telephone, recording pen, handset cell phone, Yahoo Messenger, digital camera, digital video camera, scanner, computer software, relevant volumes, computer room, broadcasting system, visual room, and practical interview.Below is the brief introduction: The computer of our computer room is Pentium 4 with LCD display. Actually, we adopt the recording penpal with the interview content of 265 minutes and the dongle we uses is functioned with 4.1million pixels with CCD Image sensor and the resolution of 640 x 480 ; 320 x 480 (15fps). At school, the soft wares we adopt for web page editing include: Ulead PhotoImpact 8, Ulead GIF Animator 5, Macromedia Flash MX, Microsoft FrontPage 2002; at home, there are many class mates using the advanced soft wares like Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, together with other applets such as: dBpower AMP Music Converter for the audio file conversion, the recording programs for music editing, MS Painter for image processing…etc. At school, we also utilize the UMAX scanner and the books relevant to computer software technology. Within the mutual communication and connection, we mainly connect with each other through telephone, cell phone, Yahoo Messenger, Email, schedule report and the FTP system. These applications make us availably work during the China Lunar Year holidays.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We would like to extend our appreciations to member Fang Yun-Ching’s father. Without him, the visitation to Tung-Rong would not have been possible because the factory supervisor of the company was his classmate. The captain of the fishing vessel is a relative of one of our team members. For this reason, we had the opportunity to go on board. We were even treated a big Nan-Fang-Ao meal. In this rewarding journey, we not only gained knowledge, we also enjoyed a great meal!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During interview, Tung-Rong factory supervisor said that company engagement in food manufacture aimed to provide hygienic, environmentally friendly, healthy and high nutrient value foods. These days, with disqualified foods being reported all the time, it is worrying to know that businessmen today care nothing but their profit gains. Consumer rights are seriously deprived of. What’s worse, while consumers are put in unfavorable situations or even lose their precious lives, businessmen come up with all sorts of excuses. Therefore, we, the consumers ought to take caution when choosing products in the future. If one has the chance to become a businessman, he should remember that consumers always come first.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The uncle of one of our members is the captain of a large fishing team in Nan-Fang-Ao. He introduced the head of Tong Yeng Canning and Processing Company to us. They invited us to visit their factories. Inside the factories we saw some machines which we could have never seen in other places. Besides the factories, we were also taken to a fishing ship. The compasses in the ship were so professional that they're extraordinarily bigger than the ones we normally used. It was an awesome experience and a lesson that enriches our mind and knowledge. After this tour, we had lunch together in a seafood restaurant. All the ingredients, particularly the seafood, were just transferred from the harbor. It's rare for us urban residents to taste fresh seafood. They shared their stories of being fishermen and answered the questions we were eagerly interested (dialogues can be viewed in our project.) Furthermore, the members of the company prepared some videos and brochures that assisted us to learn about this career more deeply. This project will not be complete without their help.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

From the interview, we realized that every fishermen and factory worker contributed a large part to the whole. The group was like a gigantic machine that couldn't operate without a part missing. The manufacturing process from fish to canned fish is a rather complexed one. It involves high-tech integrations and technological production applications such as sterilization and metal probing. This Webpage Production has helped us understand more about Taiwan's inshore fishing, factory operation...etc. During the Webpage Production process, our team members have come to realize that if any of our team members slacked, the schedule would be delayed. Commitment in a competition is always the lead to success. The same idea also applies to the our daily lives. If one cannot complete the work which was given, the employer would have the right to ask that person to leave. Work will be perfect only when everyone in a group has the right working attitude.
