Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are from a beautiful and modern city called Taoyuan which is in the northern part of Taiwan. Nice to meet you all. Taoyuan Oil Refinery, which is the subject of our project, is a very important landmark in the city. However, this landmark doesn't make a good impression on every resident here. Some residents even want the landmark to be moved. What do the residents worry about? Accidents and pollution the refinery may cause maybe two important factors. To change the bad impression, the people in the refinery continuously pay attention to the industrial safety, environmental protection, and even communication to the residents. We really hope that the win-win situation between the refinery and the residents can be created as soon as possible.

2. Summary of Our Project

We want to introduce a very important oil refinery, Taoyuan Oil Refinery. We want to discuss some focal points of work for the refinery: (1) Zero industrial accident (2) Good quality of petroleum products (3) Reduce the refining cost (4) Promote residents' friendly feelings earnestly

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The most difficult problem is that we don’t know how to use the software to create the web pages. Fortunately, we have earnest and proficient teachers who are familiar with the software we need to use. Through the teachers’ teaching and our practice, we are gradually familiar with how to use the software like Flash, Dreamweaver, and so on. The Interview is also a very difficult problem for us because we have never interviewed anyone before. Thanks for our teachers’ encouragement and assistance in the questionnaire, we overcame this problem at last.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through making the project, the students, teachers, nearby residents, and even workers in the oil refinery become a big family.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We learned different kinds of software like Flash, Dreamweaver, Windows Movie Maker, and so on. Working with teachers in different fields provides each of us a precious opportunity to contact with the knowledge in different fields. For example, as an English teacher in the school, I learned the process of oil refining this time. Therefore, the oil refining process and many kinds of oil products may be the surprise of my supplementary teaching materials in English teaching next time.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. 7 desktop computers and one notebook: create the web pages 2. one telephone in the school and three cell phones: keep the contact with teachers, students, workers in the refinery, and nearby residents 3. 2 digital still cameras: taking needed pictures 4. Software: Flash, Dreamweaver, Windows Movie Maker: create web pages 5. oral interviews include the workers in the oil refinery and nearby residents: help us to gather the information we need

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Many nearby residents don't know the oil refinery which is a very important facility and landmark. Through making this project, I believe the students can help the residents and even outsiders know this big mysterious facility.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

I think the nearby residents are able to know the real situation in the oil refinery through our project. This may change the long-term unfriendly relation and interaction between the residents and the oil refinery.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

One of our student's father is a worker who has twenty-three years working experience. He leaded us to visit everywhere we want to go in the oil refinery and workers in the refinery. Without his help, this project won’t be completed.
