Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The organization and the control of KMRT, the BOT Project, are cooperated between the public and private sectors. In official sector, the MRT Bureau of Kaohsiung government takes over the construction, and KMRT is the one that takes charge of practical engineering operation. According to the BOT scheme, during the operation period, KMRT should propose function-designing data to the MRT Bureau to be examined. The KMRT route is divided into Red Line and Orange Line, and the whole construction will be fully completed in 2006.

2. Summary of Our Project

Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan, conforms to many important standards of international city, and one of them is transportation. An internationally well-known city must possess an excellent transportation system, and MRT is the clue. As the growing population, the traffic load is limited and should be relieved by the public transportation system, and MRT is the best and most efficient way.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We only did the research in the lunch break and in the winter vacation because there was not enough time on weekdays. At the same time we had to pay attention to the school work which involves too much pressure. Thanks to our cooperation that lead to the success. At the beginning all of us had no conception of the Kaohsiung MRT. We first gathered materials for the project and discussed with our teacher. Later we set out to visit the KMRT company to have an interview which we thought was a key to success. Gradually we acquired experience in how to do the work. Besides, In our project was a public opinion poll for the citizens in Kaosiung. It was the fastest way to know what the residents thought about. But there was a big difficulty we had to overcome. It took us a lot of time to seek people who were willing to help us while we received plenty of refusal. Fortunately, we eventually coped with all the problems we faced. Taking part in cyberfair for a project, all the teammates believed that it was a very precious experience in our high school life.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Nowadays, education needs diversified ways to improve our learning ability. We can acquired useful skills which we will be able to apply to lives by training students with various learning methods. It also has a great influence on our development which will help us out in the future. The cyberfair provides excellent opportunities for every student to make progress. We can learn a lot of knowledge and get some helpful abilities. Having more and more participants all over the world, cyberfair will create a new age of talented people who will have good performance in every different area.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project involves in art, culture, nature and technology. In the planning of KMRT, “artistic MRT” was the foundation of MRT design. In an effort to achieve urban aesthetics, KMRT integrate with the beautiful landscape of the ocean city, Kaohsiung. In the future, the KMRT will become a special feature of the city and a talk of urban development. We cannot live without technology. Revolution of public transportation resulted form human technology. Shortened communication time resulted in modern technology. Rapid Transit is a must in urban life. We cannot but try to understand how the system works and to make the most of it. Cyberfair is a new kind of learning method, which let us understand the magic and mystery of technology. We then understood how to utilize it and help us do things we want. The Internet serves as a fast communication medium, providing infinite and abundant information. Modern technology brings us better way to complete our tasks and produce delicate outcome than the traditional ways. If we can make the most of the traditional methods along with the modern technology, we can achieve a better result.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

As for the hardware: Our project was done using computers. Digital camera was used to capture valuable images; we use telephones and cell phones to discuss with our teammates. More important, we visited the KMRT. As for the software: we used Dream Weaver along with Photoshop to compose the websites. We have used all kinds of instruments to collect data and set up websites. We supervised working progress of each teammate. These tools were from teachers, interviewees (teachers, classmates, citizens, etc.), parents, and KMRT offices. These instruments we have used more or less influenced us. Computers were the one that helped us the most. Software such as image-editing and web design software helped us a great deal with our project. These different function instruments made our project possible. They indicated different kinds of technology. We learned a lot from them.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Interaction between people created a stronger force to help people complete their tasks. People utilize machines and technology with machine languages. However, communication between human beings helps accomplish goals. Our project employed many different approaches. First of all, we had to find perfect teammates to work with. We tried to find out everyone’s specialties. We talked, discussed and consulted our teachers and classmates to finalize a better way to interact with each other. After grouping, we received a few tips from teachers and elder friends in school. We inherited experiences from the precedent groups. We started to work on the project in school, and after school we used communication messenger software to discuss the project. As for the interviews, we prepared information and sent it to KMRT office by e-mails. After getting permission, we made appointments by phone. After ten calls or so, we found out that we had a lot of alumnus working in KMRT. They were very glad to help us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The result of our survey showed that majority of the Kaohsiung citizen knew little about KMRT. This was where we have originated. We hoped this project could help the citizens understand more about rapid transit, and eventually let the world notice KMRT and spot the value of KMRT brought to the urban development. We felt a responsibility- as a citizen of Kaohsiung- to introduce KMRT to the world. Each one of our team agreed that we were carrying a sacred mission.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We are very grateful for the help of KMRT Bureau and KMRT Company. They provided a lot of information and arranged visits to the station and construction sites. We interviewed some important staff. Their assistances and suggestions made our project possible. Moreover, our teachers gave us very valuable suggestions. People in our community and classmates in the school also gave us their thoughts and suggestions. First we knew nothing, till now we have completed our project and felt satisfied. Besides our perseverance, we owed our success to all the people working in KMRT and people who cared about KMRT. Here, we, Kaohsiung Senior High Hobbits, would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the people involved. Thank you for your support.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The sentence from our textbook, “The beauty of the world is everywhere waiting us to discover it,” expresses the feeling in our hearts. KMRT may have some negative images in some way in the past. When we tried to understand it, we found the good sides of it. Most of the disadvantage of KMRT may be due to human behaviors. We believe that majority of the citizens and staff of KMRT wish all the problems will be solved.

Manager Lia said after the interview, “The problems we had will help us understand how to cope with them and prevent them from happening.” Yes, his words had great impact on us. We now know that we will always encounter problems while finishing our project. We know we will be brave to fact the problems . The tour to KMRT Company surprised us a great deal. We did not expect what we see. It is high technology and delicate planning. If you have a chance to visit the KMRT model demonstration space, you will be amazed like us.
